Elks search for their first win of the season against Redblacks

Since COVID-19 canceled the 2020 CFL season, the Edmonton Elks have tried multiple coaches, multiple quarterbacks and all kinds of gimmicks to consistently win games.
As an 18-53 overall record and ghastly 5-30 home record attest, none of it has worked.
Edmonton (0-3) will make another attempt at its first win of the year Sunday night when it hosts the Ottawa Redblacks.
The Elks nearly stunned Winnipeg on the road June 27 but gave up an unlikely 13-yard rushing touchdown to veteran quarterback Zach Collaros with 5:42 left that sealed a 36-23 loss.
'We've gotten better three weeks in a row but it's about winning and it's about doing the things that we need to get better to be on the other side of this result,' said first-year Edmonton coach Mark Kilam.
Wasted in the loss was a solid performance from quarterback Tre Ford, who was 18 of 29 for 252 yards and a touchdown. His 68-yard strike to Kaion Julien-Grant sparked a third quarter comeback that forged a 23-23 tie.
While the Elks are seeking their first win, Ottawa (1-3) was denied its second straight win on June 29 when Toronto came into town and took a 29-16 decision. The Redblacks also lost top receiver Bralon Addison to a shoulder injury that will keep him out of at least the next two games.
The good news for Ottawa is that starting quarterback Dru Brown (hip) appears ready to return from a three-game absence after being injured in a Week 1 loss at Saskatchewan. Brown's return comes just in time for him to have a go at the league's worst defense. Edmonton has allowed at least 31 points in every game.
'It's fantastic to see Dru out there and I thought he looked good,' Redblacks coach Bob Dyce said after practice on Wednesday.
Dustin Crum and Matt Shiltz have split the pivot duties in Brown's absence but outside of a 20-12 win at rain-soaked Calgary two weeks ago, neither has played well enough.

AL-leading Blue Jays take on challenge in facing Pirates' Paul Skenes
(Photo credit: Benny Sieu-Imagn Images) The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to improve their standing in the chase for the best record in the American League as they head to Pittsburgh on Monday night to face Pirates ace right-hander Paul Skenes. Veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman (8-9, 3.79 ERA) will oppose Skenes (7-9, 2.13) as the second-year pitcher vies to solidify his case for his first Cy Young Award and perhaps break the Pirates out of their recent woes. Pittsburgh enters the game having lost seven of its past eight. While Skenes remains the frontrunner to take home his first Cy Young this season, his month of August hasn't been very Cy Young-worthy overall. Skenes, who will face Toronto for the first time in his career, threw 93 pitches and lasted only four innings -- matching a season low -- in his most recent outing Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed four runs on six hits and two walks and struck out four in what would finish as a lopsided 14-0 loss for Pittsburgh. Skenes also allowed four runs in five innings in his first start this month against Colorado. Those starts bookended an eight-strikeout effort at home against the Cincinnati Reds during which Skenes tossed six shutout innings. But even in that start, Skenes allowed a career-high seven hits. Skenes has also allowed three home runs combined in his past three starts after allowing only two over his previous 15 starts. Skenes entered August with a 1.83 ERA and allowed only two runs in five starts in July. 'There's a silver lining in that games like this are inevitable,' Skenes said after his most recent start. 'We got it out of the way. On to the next one.' The Blue Jays had a three-game winning streak snapped on Sunday after a 10-4 loss at home to the Texas Rangers. But Toronto has played generally well of late, winning eight of its past 12 games. Gausman's experience makes him a lock to be in Toronto's rotation come playoff time. But the Blue Jays are looking to shape their rotation for the stretch run with the imminent team debut of right-hander Shane Bieber, who is nearing a return following Tommy John surgery. A two-time All-Star and the 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner while with Cleveland, Bieber made his final planned rehab start on Saturday and Toronto could have him in its rotation later this week, providing a major boost over the final month and a half of the regular season. 'You're talking about a top-of-the-rotation pitcher, a guy who's been in big moments, done well and really understands how to pitch. It's exhilarating,' Blue Jays manager John Schneider said of Bieber, who was acquired from the Guardians at the trade deadline in July. Gausman took a loss in his most recent outing on Wednesday against the visiting Chicago Cubs, but he pitched well. Gausman allowed only two runs on three hits and walked one over seven innings. But two of those hits were solo home runs to Michael Busch and Matt Shaw, which contributed to a 4-1 Cubs' victory. Gausman has pitched at least six innings in each of his past five starts and allowed two runs or fewer in four of those outings. He is 1-3 with a 5.74 ERA in 47 innings over 10 career appearances (eight starts) against the Pirates.

Richard Green birdies 18 to earn first Champions Tour title

Green, 54, earned his first victory in his 71st start on the tour. He posted five runner-up finishes a year ago, including two playoff losses. One of his second-place finishes occurred in Calgary. Green started the day one stroke behind Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, the leader in the Charles Schwab Cup race. He took the lead with his third birdie of the day at the par-3 fifth hole and moved to 17 under with his fourth birdie at No. 7. With a poor tee shot, Jimenez dropped three strokes back after making a double-bogey at the par-3 12th hole. Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez birdied three of the first four holes, but bogeys on Nos. 5 and 8 dropped him back to 13 under. He would rally on the back nine, playing 4-under golf over the final five holes and reached 17 under after a birdie four on the 18th. Green, though, easily reached the par-5 finishing hole in two shots and hit a perfect lag putt, which he tapped in from close range for the victory. The win wiped out all of the disappointments of not being able to cross the finish line in front last season. 'Things turned out the way they did last year,' Green told The Canadian Press. 'I had a great year and I really can't complain, but to come out there and have the results that I did last year certainly helped me get this one and get it across the line. 'I think you've got to have a couple of little knocks before you win and I'm pleased that I've been able to bounce back from some sort of mediocre form at the start of the year this year, but I've got things going again.' Gonzalez finished in second place, and Jimenez(16 under) took third but maintained his lead in the Charles Schwab Cup race. 'Ricardo got close and Miguel nearly eagled to tie me,' said Green. 'I've been feeling really good with the putter and these greens are so beautiful to putt on. Charlie Wi tied for the best round of the day with a 6-under 64 and finished fourth at 14 under.

Jaguars scratch Travis Hunter ahead of preseason game against the Saints
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Travis Hunter was scratched Sunday by the Jacksonville Jaguars before their preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner out of Colorado and No. 2 pick in last spring's NFL draft, had missed practice in recent days because of what team officials have described as an upper-body injury. The Jaguars also scratched veteran wide receiver Dyami Brown, although it was not immediately clear why. Hunter and Brown both played in Jacksonville's preseason opener last week, a 31-25 loss to Pittsburgh. Hunter, a rare, two-way player, caught two passes for 9 yards and also participated in eight plays as a defensive back. Brown had 7 yards rushing on an end-around.
