US comedian and entertainer Ruth Buzzi dead at 88

Perth Now02-05-2025
Ruth Buzzi, who rose to fame as the frumpy and bitter Gladys Ormphby on the groundbreaking sketch US comedy series Laugh-In and made more than 200 television appearances during a 45-year career, has died at age 88.
Buzzi died on Thursday at her home in Texas, her agent Mike Eisenstad said.
She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and was in hospice care. Shortly before her death, her husband, Kent Perkins, had posted a statement on Buzzi's Facebook page, thanking her many fans and telling them: "She wants you to know she probably had more fun doing those shows than you had watching them."
Buzzi won a Golden Globe and was a two-time Emmy nominee for the NBC show that ran from 1968 to 1973. She was the only regular to appear in all six seasons, including the pilot.
Born Ruth Ann Buzzi on July 24, 1936, in Westerly, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of Angelo Buzzi, a nationally known stone sculptor. Her father and later her brother operated Buzzi Memorials, a gravestone and monument maker in Stonington, Connecticut, where she was head cheerleader in high school.
Buzzi enrolled at the Pasadena Playhouse at age 17. Two years later, she travelled with singer Rudy Vallee in a musical and comedy act during her summer break. That earned her an Actors' Equity union card before she graduated from the playhouse's College of Theatre Arts.
Buzzi moved to New York and was immediately hired for a lead role in an off-Broadway musical revue, the first of 19 such shows she performed in on the East Coast.
She was a semi-regular on That Girl as Marlo Thomas' friend. She co-starred with Jim Nabors as time-travelling androids on The Lost Saucer in the mid-1970s.
Her other guest appearances included variety shows hosted by Burnett, Flip Wilson, Glen Campbell, Tony Orlando, Donny and Marie Osmond and Leslie Uggams.
Buzzi guested in music videos with Weird Al Yankovic, the B-52's and the Presidents of the United States of America.
She was Emmy nominated for her six-year run as shopkeeper Ruthie on Sesame Street.
Buzzi was active on social media and had thousands of followers whom she rewarded with such one-liners as "I have never faked a sarcasm" and "Scientists say the universe is made up entirely of neurons, protons and electrons. They seem to have missed morons."
She married actor Kent Perkins in 1978.
The couple moved from California to Texas in 2003 and bought a 260-hectare ranch near Stephenville.
Buzzi retired from acting in 2021 and suffered a series of strokes the following year. Her husband told The Dallas Morning News in 2023 that she had dementia.

The Kelly Clarkson Show reportedly won't be delayed following Brandon Blackstock's death

The Kelly Clarkson Show's filming schedule reportedly won't be impacted by the death of her ex-husband, Brandon Blackstock. The talent manager died on August 7, aged 48, of natural causes after battling malignant melanoma. Kelly postponed her Las Vegas residency in order to spend more time with their children, River, 11, and Remington, nine, right before his death. In an update regarding her work schedule, a source told Deadline that Kelly missed one shoot for The Voice earlier this month following his passing, but that she was returning this week to film the NBC talent show. Reba McEntire, who was stepmother to Brandon, also filmed her appearance for Season 28. As for her eponymous talk show, production is said to be due to kick off as planned in a matter of weeks. As reported by the outlet, the programme is "on track to start production in early September as scheduled, with tickets available on studio audience sites." Brandon's death was announced by a family representative on the day he died. They told People at the time: "It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. "Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time." The 43-year-old pop star - who endured an acrimonious split from the talent manager - had announced on X shortly before his passing: "Unfortunately, I need to postpone the remainder of the August Studio Session dates in Las Vegas. "While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children's father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them." Although the singer revealed that Brandon was ill, she didn't share any other details about his sickness.

Austin Butler can't fit into designer pants after bulking up his butt

Austin Butler can no longer squeeze his butt into his designer Celine pants since bulking up for Caught Stealing. The 34-year-old actor underwent a major body transformation to portray basketball player-turned-bartender, Hank Thompson, in the 2025 American crime thriller film, packing on 15 kilograms. He told Men's Health magazine: 'I actually have a whole section of just baseball players' asses that [director, Darren Aronofsky] would send me. 'He was like, 'Look how thick they are!'' And while he has an enviable body, he was left gutted to no longer be able to fit into the expensive pants, adding: 'I've got a whole section of Celine pants that I just can't even wear anymore.' Austin was assigned personal trainer Beth Lewis, who got Hugh Jackman beefed up to portray Marvel's Wolverine. It's quite the contrast to having to pile on the pounds to portray Elvis Presley. Austin drank microwaved ice cream and dozens of doughnuts for his Golden Globe-winning portrayal of the late King of Rock and Roll in Baz Luhrmann's 2022 biopic Elvis, after being inspired by Ryan Gosling's method for gaining weight for a role. Appearing on the Variety Awards Circuit podcast, he spilled: "I heard that Ryan Gosling, when he was going to do 'The Lovely Bones', had microwaved Häagen-Dazs and would drink it. So I started doing that." Austin, who wore a body suit for the part, enjoyed the sweet treats to start with but quickly started to feel "awful" about himself. He continued: "I would go get two dozen doughnuts and eat them all. I really started to pack on some pounds. It's fun for a week or so, and then you feel awful with yourself. "But we were planning on shooting chronologically in the beginning. That quickly went out the window, then especially with COVID. It was just impossible." Not only was the role physically demanding, but Austin also didn't get to see his family for three years while working on flick. The Bikeriders star also damaged his vocal cords singing Elvis songs 40 times.

Aubrey Plaza speaks about husband Jeff Baena's death on Amy Poehler podcast

Actor Aubrey Plaza addressed her husband's death in an interview released Tuesday, marking the first time she's publicly spoken at length about the loss. Plaza's husband, Hollywood writer and director Jeff Baena, died by suicide in January. Speaking with former Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler on Poehler's new podcast Good Hang, the 41-year-old White Lotus actor said the grief has been like a 'giant ocean of just awfulness that's right there.' 'I can see it. And sometimes I just want to just dive into it and just be in it,' Plaza said. 'And then sometimes I just look at it. And then sometimes I just try to get away from it. But it's always there. It's just always there.' Plaza also drew a comparison between her grief and a scene from the alien-filled horror movie The Gorge, which starred Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy and premiered in February. 'There's a cliff on one side, and then there's a cliff on the other side, and then there's gorge in between, and it's filled with all these monster people that are trying to get them,' she said. 'And I swear, when I watched it, I was like, 'That feels like what my grief is like.'' Plaza and Baena married in 2021. They worked together on several films, including 2014's Life After Beth, which Baena wrote and directed with Plaza in a starring role. She has made a few public comments or appearances since his death, calling his death 'an unimaginable tragedy' in the immediate aftermath. Poehler addressed Baena's death within the first 15 minutes of the episode, saying: 'On behalf of all the people who feel like they know you, and the people who do know you, how are you feeling today?' 'Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you,' Plaza replied. 'Overall, I'm here and I'm functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I'm OK, but it's like a daily struggle, obviously.' Since her role on The White Lotus, Plaza has become one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood. Throughout her career, she has received several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, including for her role on the second season of The White Lotus. In 2023, she was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. Plaza appeared on Poehler's podcast as part of a media tour to promote her upcoming movie, Honey Don't, which premieres in cinemas this week.
