RX Sport raises bar for Arab motorsport on global stage
DUBAI: Dubai-based RX Sport is a team led by veteran Emirati champion Rashid al Ketbi and is now raising the bar for motorsport on the international stage. It was founded just one month before the 2023 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. After a career full of his achievements, Al Ketbi decided to use his experience and passion to support and develop Arab talent, especially after he was injured during a round of the FIA European Rally Championship. This passion led the team to compete in the 2024 Dakar Rally, the world's toughest rally, only a few months after its debut in Abu Dhabi. In their second appearance at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the team won the T4 category, solidifying their strong presence. RX Sport's ambitions weren't limited to cross-country and Baja World Cup races. The team has also become a platform for celebrating Arab champions and has welcomed notable names like Yahya al Helei and his son Mansour, as well as Shaikh Khalid al Qassimi for the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. While many racing teams exist in the UAE, they often operate on a local scale. This is where RX Sport stands out: it is the first Emirati team to compete internationally in cross-country and Baja rallies. The team's ambition extends beyond just supporting drivers. It works hard to empower Arab navigators, most notably Khalid al Kindi, a step that affirms its comprehensive commitment to elevating motorsport in the region. AL WAHAIBI COMPETES IN WORLD BAJA Omani rally star Hamad al Wahaibi joined RX Sport to compete in the FIA World Baja Cup this season. Al Wahaibi believes the development of the sport in the region begins with supporting Arab teams, which is why he chose to continue his career under the banner of an Arab team striving for the top. Al Wahaibi is joined by Emirati navigator Khalid al Kindi on some events, resulting in strong performances that have placed them in contention for the SSV title. The pair still have more events this season, as they prepare for next year's racing programme with RX Sport. Rashid al Ketbi shared his journey. He said, "After my accident in the European Championship, which resulted in a broken back, I couldn't stay away from motorsport, a sport that entered my mind and heart in 1992. That's where the idea to establish the team came from, so I could continue facing the challenges of this world." "Today, we are competing in the FIA World Baja Cup with my brother and friend, Omani champion Hamad al Wahaibi. We hold an advanced position after winning the Italian round and achieving second place in the rounds in Spain and Jordan. We are proud to have a champion with Hamad's experience and achievements in our ranks and we look forward to facing future challenges." Al Wahaibi also expressed his pride in joining the team. He said, "I am very happy to be with the RX Sport team. This team is ambitious, promising and has proven its worth and high standing in Arab and international motorsport." "Rashid al Ketbi is very ambitious and passionate about motorsport. He considers this sport the centre of his life and goes to extraordinary lengths to raise the Arab flag high on the international stage. I wish the team all the best and trust that all of their dreams, and Rashid's dreams, will come true in the near future." Khalid al Kindi, who has known Rashid al Ketbi for a long time and says his 'testimony is biased' in his description, spoke about the team's importance, "What distinguishes the team is that it reflects Rashid al Ketbi's passion for motorsports. It's an Emirati team that competes in local and international championships." "The team is also distinguished by its continuous development and its quest to achieve strong results in every round and constantly face new challenges. This was reflected in their participation in the Dakar Rally, in addition to continuously updating the cars to the latest specifications."

JR Style crowned champions at 'Phygital' Cup
Muscat, Aug 15 The Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre hosted the second edition of the 'Phygital' football championship from August 10 to 14, blending the mental thrill of electronic gaming with the physical excitement of real-world matches. This innovative experience showcased the harmony between the digital and physical worlds. Organised by the Oman Committee for E-Sports as part of the 'Sport Park' activities, the event featured eight teams with over 50 players, presenting a unique model of dual competition that combines advanced technical skills with on-field athletic performance, adding a new dimension to sports and entertainment. The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of Dr Amer bin Nasser al Matani, CEO of Oman LNG's Development Foundation, who stated in his speech that the championship represents a qualitative leap in Omani sports, praising the organisers for providing a professional environment and high-quality facilities. He emphasised that these efforts contributed to the event's success and the emergence of promising young talents capable of competing regionally and internationally. Fearless team claimed second spot. The final matches crowned JR Style as the champions after an intense clash with Fearless. The digital stage ended with Fearless winning 3–2, but JR Style turned the tide in the physical stage with a 2–0 victory, securing the title with an aggregate score of 4–3. In the third-place playoff, Bite on Fire defeated Al Ittihad with an overall score of 5–3, winning 3–2 in the digital match and 2–1 in the physical one. Speaking about the tournament's format and objectives, Hamad al Jahwari, Secretary of the Oman Committee for E-Sports, explained that 'Phygital' is an innovative sports model that combines the fun of virtual competition with the thrill of real-life gameplay, making it unique in the region. He noted that each encounter starts with a virtual stage in EA Sports FC 25's Rush mode, a fast-paced 5-vs-5 format featuring four field players and an AI-controlled goalkeeper. Matches are played on a small virtual pitch, encouraging open play, rapid exchanges and swift transitions. The game then shifts to the physical stage, played on a real football pitch in a five-a-side format, with each half lasting five minutes, offering a fast-paced, physically demanding atmosphere. The final result is determined by the total goals scored across both stages, making balance between digital and physical performance essential and pushing teams to prepare their players in both aspects. In the third-place playoff, Bite on Fire defeated Al Ittihad with an overall score of 5–3. Al Jahwari added that the second edition received wide engagement and praise from both participants and fans, with prize money exceeding 1,000 Omani rials. The winning team also earned the opportunity to represent Oman at the 'Future Games' in Kazakhstan, an international event that combines physical and digital sports. He stressed that the champion team will be prepared according to the highest international standards to ensure an honourable performance on the world stage. He also emphasised that the tournament is a key step in promoting the culture of e-sports in Oman, balancing mental engagement with physical health an approach that encourages adoption by families, schools and institutions, fostering a supportive environment for the growth of this type of sport. The championship concluded with the honouring of the winning teams in a festive atmosphere that reflected the spirit of fair competition, reaffirming Oman's steady progress towards cementing its place in the regional and global e-sports and physical sports scene.

Refereeing errors dash Seeb hopes as FC Goa advance
MUSCAT, AUG 13 Seeb rued some refereeing decisions including a penalty rejection as hosts FC Goa won 2-1 in the AFC Champions League playoff in India's Goa on Wednesday. In the 43rd minute, the ball touched the hand of Dejan Drazic inside the box but the Chinese referee denied a penalty after consulting the line referee at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The triumph confirmed FC Goa's progression to the Group Stage of the AFC Champions League Two 2025/2026, while Seeb will continue their continental campaign in the AFC Challenge Cup. Goals from Dejan Drazic (24th minute) and Javier Siverio (52') put the hosts in control before Nasser al Rawahi pulled one back for Seeb on the hour mark. Despite a spirited second-half push, Seeb's hopes were dashed amid what the Omani side felt were a series of questionable officiating calls by the Chinese referee in charge. Seeb, the 2022 AFC Cup champions, began with intent. Within two minutes, Nasser al Rawahi forced FC Goa defender Pol Moreno into an acrobatic clearance, followed by Zahir al Aghbari's blocked attempt inside the box. The Omani side's pressure continued in the 23rd minute when Al Rawahi's timely tackle set up Abdulaziz al Muqbali, whose curling strike was parried away by goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari. Just a minute later, FC Goa broke the deadlock. Borja Herrera's instinctive long pass found Drazic, who eluded Al Rawahi's challenge before chipping the ball into the net. After the break, the hosts doubled their lead in the 52nd minute when Herrera's corner delivery found Siverio, who rose above the Seeb defence to head home. Seeb responded quickly, with Ali al Busaidy cutting the ball back for Nasser al Rawahi to finish from close range in the 60th minute. The goal injected life into the match, but despite late pressure, the visitors couldn't find an equaliser. While the loss means Seeb miss out a historic milestone to become the first Omani club to reach the AFC Champions League Two Group Stage, the club will now turn their focus to making a strong impact in the AFC Challenge League, where they aim to replicate the continental success of their 2022 AFC Cup triumph.
