Jill Sobule death: Terrifying new details of house fire revealed

New York Post5 days ago

Jill Sobule's death is still under investigation as new horrific details emerge about the fatal house fire that broke out earlier this month.
The 'I Kissed a Girl' hitmaker's body was discovered in a bedroom on the second floor of her friends' two-story Minnesota home, according to the Woodbury Public Safety's fire report obtained by The Post on Tuesday.
The report dated May 16 stated that while the source and cause of the fire are still being investigated, the blaze may have started outside, with officials noting that 'abandoned or discarded materials or products' were contributing factors to the ignition.

It also stated that those inside the home were asleep when the fire broke out on May 1 at around 5:37 a.m. and that they did not appear to be impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Smoke detectors were present and alerted the occupants of the blaze, per the report that also revealed three stories of the home, which included the roof, suffered 'extreme damage' of upwards to 70-100 percent.
The report also included an incident summary detailing what Woodbury firefighters witnessed when they first approached the burning home — and their heroic efforts to desperately extinguish the out-of-control blaze when they learned that Sobule had not made it out with her friends.
'Initial reports stated there was no one inside. While enroute [sic], a dispatch update revealed there was one person still inside the home,' the outline read, stating that 'large heavy black smoke was witnessed from about 1/2 mile out from the home.'

When the first fire unit arrived on the scene, they 'could see flames fully involved in [the] back of [the] home, with large rolling flames coming out the front door of the home and out through the roof,' as well as 'heavy smoke and flames coming from the front door and front windows.'
They also noted that 'the back deck was 'fully gone' and the basement windows on the west side of the home were actively breaking out due to the heavy fire involvement.'

The first arriving crews were 'initially unable to make entry into the home' due to the 'heavy amounts of smoke and flame,' the report stated, noting that 'an exterior offensive attack strategy' was then called into play.

Firefighters worked tirelessly, with some battling the fire from the front of the 3,128-square-foot home and others tackling the flames from the back as two ambulances were requested to the scene 'for EMS standby.'
'After knocking down enough fire to safetly [sic] gain access into the home, a primary search was initiated to locate the missing person,' the report read. 'The deceased was found on the second floor of the home in a bedroom on the Charlie/Delta corner.'
The State Fire Marshal and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner later arrived at the scene to conduct their investigations before crews removed Sobule's body from the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home.

Teams continued to clean up and extinguish the remaining hot spots before all units cleared the scene, according to the report.
The scene examination also revealed that 'heavy fire damage' was 'observed on the rear exterior of the home, appearing to originate near the pre-existing screened in porch and deck area,' with burn patterns extending 'from the ground level up to the deck' and continuing 'to the roofline and into the attic space of the roof.'
The report noted that 'the deck area and screened in porch are mostly gone, with only some horizontal and vertical structural support members remaining.'

Almost immediately, investigators began looking into whether the singer was still alive when the house went up in flames.
Sobule's friends — a married couple — made it out of their house and believed she was behind them. Once they were safely outside, they discovered the heartbreaking truth.
Several of the singer's colleagues addressed her death, with her manager, John Porter, telling The Post, 'Jill Sobule was a force of nature and human rights advocate whose music is woven into our culture. I was having so much fun working with her. I lost a client and a friend today. I hope her music, memory, & legacy continue to live on and inspire others.'
Her former roommate exclusively spoke to The Post and recalled her last memory of the star.
Sobule dropped 12 albums during her three-decades-long career and was also behind the autobiographical musical 'F–k 7th Grade,' which saw a four-theatrical run, as well as the theme song for Nickelodeon's 'Unfabulous.'
She left behind her brother, James, sister-in-law, Mary, and two nephews.

What we know about the suspect and victims in the Boulder, Colorado, attack

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Six people calling for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza were injured at an outdoor mall in Boulder, Colorado, by a man who police say used a makeshift flamethrower and hurled an incendiary device into a crowd. The FBI immediately described Sunday's violence as a 'targeted terror attack.' The suspect, identified by the FBI as 45-year-old Mohamed Sabry Soliman, yelled 'Free Palestine' during the attack on the group of demonstrators, said Mark Michalek, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Denver field office. Soliman was arrested and taken to the hospital for treatment, but authorities didn't elaborate on his injuries. Here is what we know about the attack: How the attack unfolded Authorities said the attacker targeted demonstrators with a volunteer group called Run for Their Lives, which organizes run and walk events to call for the immediate release of the Israeli hostages who remain in Gaza since they were captured by militants during the incursion into southern Israel that started the Israel-Hamas war in 2023. The group had gathered at the Pearl Street pedestrian mall, a four-block area in downtown Boulder frequented by tourists and students. The Israel-Hamas war has inflamed global tensions and contributed to a spike in antisemitic violence in the United States. A week earlier, two Israeli Embassy staffers were shot to death in Washington by a man who yelled 'I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza' as he was being led away by police. Police in Boulder evacuated multiple blocks of the pedestrian mall. The scene shortly after the attack was tense, as law enforcement agents with a police dog walked through the streets looking for threats and instructed the public to stay clear. The violence occurred four years after 10 people were killed a shooting rampage at a grocery store in Boulder, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Denver. The gunman was sentenced to life in prison for murder after a jury rejected his attempt to avoid prison time by pleading not guilty by reason of insanity. Several people hospitalized The people hospitalized for injuries in the Pearl Street attack range in age from 67 to 88. Photos from the scene showed a woman lying on the ground in the fetal position with her hair soaked, and a man helping her and getting water from someone with a water jug. The injuries authorities found were consistent with reports of people being set on fire, Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said, adding that injuries ranged from serious to minor. Redfearn told reporters Sunday evening that it was too early to discuss a motive but that witnesses were being interviewed. 'It would be irresponsible for me to speculate on motive this early on,' he said. The suspect was arrested at the scene Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, was arrested at the scene. No charges were immediately announced, but officials said they expect to hold him 'fully accountable.' Video from the scene showed him shirtless and wearing jeans and holding two clear bottles with a transparent liquid in them while shouting at onlookers. Another video shows a witness shouting, 'He's right there. He's throwing Molotov cocktails,' as a police officer with his gun drawn advanced on the suspect. FBI leaders in Washington said they were treating the Boulder attack as an act of terrorism, and the Justice Department — which leads investigations into acts of violence driven by religious, racial or ethnic motivations — decried the attack as a 'needless act of violence, which follows recent attacks against Jewish Americans.' 'This act of terror is being investigated as an act of ideologically motivated violence based on the early information, the evidence, and witness accounts. We will speak clearly on these incidents when the facts warrant it,' FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said in a post on X.

Ukraine and Russia meet in Turkey for peace talks with few hopes for a breakthrough

ISTANBUL (AP) — Delegations from Russia and Ukraine gathered in Turkey on Monday for their second round of direct peace talks in just over two weeks, although expectations were low for any significant progress on ending the three-year war. The Ukrainian delegation led Defense Minister Rustem Umerov was in Istanbul for the meeting, according to Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, said in a message posted on the Ukrainian Embassy Whatsapp group. The Russian delegation headed by Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, arrived Sunday evening, Russian state media reported. Turkish officials said the meeting would start at 1 p.m. local time, with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan presiding over the talks and officials from the Turkish intelligence agency also present. However, Ukrainian spokesperson Tykhyi said the start would be at midday local time. It was not immediately possible to clarify the discrepancy. Recent comments by senior officials in both countries indicate they remain far apart on the key conditions for stopping the war. Fierce fighting has in the meantime continued along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, and both sides have hit each other's territory with deep strikes. On Sunday, a Ukrainian drone attack destroyed more than 40 Russian planes deep inside Russia, Ukraine's Security Service said, while Moscow pounded Ukraine with missiles and drones. Russian air defenses downed 162 Ukrainian drones over eight Russian regions overnight, as well as over the annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea, Russia's Defense Ministry said Monday. Ukrainian air defenses damaged 52 out of 80 drones launched by Russia overnight, the Ukrainian air force said. Two ballistic missiles struck a residential neighborhood in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Monday morning, including one that hit near a school, the city's mayor said. One missile landed near an apartment building, while the second struck a road near the school, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said in a statement and published a photo of a wide crater. 'Standing next to the crater, you realize how different it all could have been,' Terekhov wrote. 'A few more meters — and it would have hit the building. A few more minutes — and cars, buses would have been on the road.' No casualties were reported. ___ Suzan Frazer in Ankara, Turkey, and Hanna Arhirova in Kyiv, Ukraine, contributed to this report. ___ Follow AP's coverage of the war in Ukraine at Mehmet Guzel, The Associated Press

What to know about Karol Nawrocki, Poland's newly elected conservative president

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — The final result of Poland's presidential election only became clear after a long, nail-gripping night of counting as both candidates were locked in a near dead heat in the first exit polls after voting ended. Poles awakened Monday to a clear albeit close result that returns a nationalist politician to the presidency who has pledged to hinder the centrist, pro-EU government for the remainder of its term. Here's what to know about Karol Nawrocki, Poland's newly elected conservative president: Trump backed him Nawrocki is a 42-year-old historian who had no political experience prior to the campaign and who was not even a party member until he was tapped by the conservative Law and Justice party that governed Poland from 2015 to 2023. Nawrocki heads the Institute of National Remembrance, which embraces nationalist historical narratives. He led efforts to topple monuments to the Soviet Red Army in Poland. Russia responded by putting him on a wanted list, according to Polish media reports. Nawrocki's supporters describe him as the embodiment of traditional, patriotic values. Many of them oppose abortion and LGBTQ+ visibility and say Nawrocki reflects the traditional values they grew up with. He was also the preferred favorite of U.S. President Donald Trump, with the American conservative group CPAC holding its first meeting in Poland last week during the campaign to give him a boost. Kristi Noem, the U.S. Homeland Security Secretary and a prominent Trump ally, strongly praised him and urged Poles to vote for him. His campaign echoed themes popular on the American right. A common refrain from his supporters is that Nawrocki will restore 'normality,' as they believe Trump has done. U.S. flags appeared at his rallies. Nawrocki performed better in the first round than expected, an indication he was underestimated in the polling. Nawrocki was linked to scandals Nawrocki's quick political rise has not been without controversy, with reports linking him to underworld figures whom he met while boxing or working as a hotel security guard in the past. Nawrocki has also been linked to a scandal involving the acquisition of a Gdansk apartment from an elderly pensioner named Jerzy. Allegations suggest Nawrocki promised to care for Jerzy in return but failed to fulfill the commitment, leading the man to end up in a publicly funded retirement home. His shifting explanations raised questions about his transparency and credibility. After the scandal erupted he donated the apartment to a charity. It recently emerged that Nawrocki took part in a 2009 Gdansk brawl involving about 140 rival soccer fans, some later convicted of crimes. Nawrocki described the fight as a form of 'noble' combat. Polish media have also reported on his connections to gangsters and the world of prostitution. His critics say all of these things make him unfit to represent Poland as the head of state but many right-wing voters don't believe the allegations and accuse the media of using its power to hurt him, creating what appears to be a rallying effect around him. It's unclear what effect, if any, these scandals had on the outcome of Sunday's result.
