US Open 2025: Grigor Dimitrov pulls out of tournament with injured chest muscle

India Today2 days ago
World No.21 Grigor Dimitrov, the three-time Grand Slam semifinalist from Bulgaria, has officially withdrawn from the 2025 US Open due to an injured chest muscle. This marks Dimitrov's first absence from a Grand Slam tournament since 2010, ending a remarkable streak of consistent participation. The injury occurred during a gripping fourth-round match at Wimbledon against world No.1 Jannik Sinner. Dimitrov had surged to a commanding two-set lead before being forced to retire early in the third set after collapsing in pain. The Bulgarian's exit marked a pivotal moment in the tournament, with Sinner advancing to the quarterfinals amid expressions of sympathy for Dimitrov's unfortunate plight.advertisementWith Dimitrov's withdrawal, Chilean player Alejandro Tabilo has been granted a spot in the men's singles draw at Flushing Meadows, which begins on August 24. Should another withdrawal occur, Brandon Holt is next in line to enter the field. Holt made headlines in 2022 when he upset Taylor Fritz at the US Open, and he carries a notable tennis lineage as the son of two-time US Open champion Tracy Austin.
'US Open Men's Singles Update: Grigor Dimitrov has withdrawn from the US Open,' US Open wrote on their social media. 'Alejandro Tabilo moves into the Main Draw.'
Dimitrov's decision to pull out of the US Open is a significant setback for the 32-year-old, who had hoped for a swift recovery. The severity of the pectoral injury, however, has severely hampered his ability to perform at the elite level. His absence will undoubtedly be felt in the tournament, given his strong and consistent showings in recent years. The 2025 US Open will start on August 24, featuring top players such as Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Novak Djokovic, and Aryna Sabalenka. Sinner and Sabalenka are the defending champions after they beat Fritz and Jessica Pegula in the final last year.- Ends

Jannik Sinner vs Carloz Alcaraz. Millennials had the Nadal-Federer-Djokovic trinity and the Williams sisters. Gen Zs have the Italian-Spanish duo Sincaraz. Maria Sharapova recalls when Andy Roddick ‘pulled a trick' on her first visit to Paris: ‘Looked like they're from Moulin Rouge'

Tennis great Maria Sharapova recalled in a podcast with Andy Roddick how the American ace once 'pulled a trick' on her while they were competing in Paris. Speaking on the podcast 'Served with Andy Roddick', Sharapova said she was about '19 or 20' and on her first visit to Paris. 'I'm setting context here. Place Vendome (an upscale area of Paris), I was staying at the Park Hyatt for the very first time,' she said. 'You (Roddick) were staying at that hotel. And because I didn't know the area, I said, 'Hey, Andy, you've been here before. Can you give me a few restaurant recommendations for dinner?' And he's like, 'Oh yeah, no, absolutely. There's one around the corner. It's called Hotel Coast.' 'And I was like, oh, great. So, you know, it's my dad and, you know, a few of my male team members, my trainer, coach, and physical therapist: four boys and me. So we walk into the… It's a hotel and it's, like, meant to be a trendy hotel. I didn't know it at the time. We walked in and they sat us down. 'And every server, I mean, looks like they're from Moulin Rouge. And I was like, this guy must be sh**ting me. He really, he just, he purposely took me as a 19-year-old to this, it looked like a show. Like really short skirts and a lot of cleavage. And my team was like, Andy, Andy is the best. I stood up and I walked out. Because I thought you were pulling a trick on me,' Sharapova said, laughing. Roddick pleaded innocence, replying: 'I don't know what kind of room you and your team requested there. Every meal I've ever had there was respectable. The food was great. Nice little music, dim lighting…' However, Roddick — known for being a prankster on the tour — conceded 'That sounds like something I might have done. I'm not going to fully deny it.' Sharapova reflected on a range of topics during the free-wheeling interview and also opened up on motherhood. She said how 'depending on the mood' she calls her son, Theodore by two names. 'We chose a name that would sound similar in both languages. I use Theodore when it's like, let's get this shit done. Because I just, I don't have an extra minute of mental capacity, not physical, mental,' she said. 'And it's Theo every time else. Sharapova also touched upon how parenthood has changed the meaning of Saturdays for her since her playing days. When someone asked me, 'What is your favourite day of the week?' Saturday was my favourite day of the week. Because that is a Grand Slam final. That's where I want it to be. And now when Saturday comes along and you're like, where is my nanny? There's no school. There's no nanny. You're like, I don't know if Saturday's my favourite day.' She added: 'A typical Saturday… it all kind of depends. We travel quite a bit. Our life, I mean, Alexander's family is in the UK. So we spend a lot of time in Europe. In the States, it's all, you know, in California, it's the farmer's market. We like to cook. We're homebodies. So it's not, I wouldn't say it's super exciting, but it's very family oriented.'

Venus Williams receives wildcard to play singles at US Open, breaks 44-year-old record at her home grand slam

28 years on from when she made the finals of the US Open in her first appearance at the tournament as a teenager, Venus Williams is back. Having missed the last two editions of her home tournament at Flushing Meadows as she battled against surgery, Williams is set to mark a return to the singles field as a 45-year-old veteran. Venus Williams waves to the crowd after her return victory at the Washington DC Open earlier this summer.(AP) The older Williams sister has been granted a wildcard into the singles draw, alongside the mixed doubles invitation she already received earlier this month from the USTA. Williams becomes the oldest player to be an entrant into a US Open singles event since 1981 — 44 years ago, and 16 years before her own debut, when Renee Richards participated at the age of 47. Williams became the oldest player to win a singles match on the WTA tour since 2004, when she marked her return to the court at the DC Open in Washington with a victory over Peyton Stearns. Martina Navratilova had won a singles match at the age of 47 in 2004. 'I'm still the same player,' promises Venus This appearance marked Venus' return to the tour after an absence due to surgery, and although she hadn't played professional tennis since 2023, she had not officially announced her retirement. When once against prompted with the question in Washington, the seven-time grand slam champion held her cards close to her chest. 'I'm just here for now, and who knows? Maybe there's more ... But at the moment, I'm focused just on this,' Venus had said following her win. 'I haven't played in a year. There is no doubt I can play tennis, but obviously coming back to play matches, it takes time to get in the swing of things. I definitely feel I'll play well. I'm still the same player.' Williams is a two-time champion at the US Open, having won in back-to-back tournaments in 2000 and 2001, to account for two of her seven singles slam titles (with four more at Wimbledon to her name.) She has also reached the finals on two occasions, with her best finish in recent years coming in her resurgent 2017 season, in which she reached the finals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and made the semifinals in New York.
