Golden joy for Meg Harris as Aussie teammate denied history in world record drama
Harris' silver medal at the Paris Games was one of the great underdog stories of last year's Olympics, but she went one better in Singapore after winning the women's 50m freestyle final in 24.02 seconds. Harris touched in first ahead of Chinese pair Qingfeng Wu (24.26s) and Yujie Cheng (24.28s) to claim the first world title of her career, after shifting her focus from the 100m freestyle to become a one-lap specialist.
The 23-year-old pulled out of the 100m freestyle after swimming the heat at the national trials. And Harris even had to be convinced by Australia's coaches to swim in the 4x100m freestyle relay on the opening night of the worlds, where she helped the Aussie team win gold.
Harris' focus on the 50m free was a huge risk, considering she'd already won two Olympic golds and five at the world titles as part of Australia's dominant relay teams. But the decision paid off handsomely for Harris in Singapore as she emulated men's sprint specialist Cameron McEvoy, to give Australia golds in both 50m freestyle events.
'I still don't have the words to process this, but this is a dream,' Harris said. 'I felt really good the first 15m and that's been my weakness so far. I knew if I got that right I just had to hold on.' Victory also saw Harris become Australia's first female 50m freestyle world champion since Bronte Campbell in 2015.

Mollie O'Callaghan denied 12th gold as USA set new WR
Meanwhile, O'Callaghan's quest to set a new national record of 12 golds at the world championships came up short in a dramatic women's 4x100m medley final. O'Callaghan is tied with Ian Thorpe on a national record 11 gold medals at the worlds but she was denied a historic 12th as the powerful American team broke the world record in the relay final.
Team USA combined superbly to set a new world benchmark of three minutes 49.34 seconds, with the Dolphins' team of Kaylee McKeown, Ella Ramsay, Alex Perkins and O'Callaghan taking silver in the last race of the championships. It saw Australia finish the meet second on the standings with eight gold, six silver and six bronze, behind the formidable USA (nine, 11, nine).
Australia's Jenna Forrester also picked up a silver medal for the green and gold on the final night of competition after finishing second behind Summer McIntosh in the women's 400m medley final. Victory saw the Canadian megastar sign off her incredible campaign with four gold medals in Singapore.
Sam Short's illness-plagued meet finished with fourth place in the men's 1500m, while Isaac Cooper was seventh in the men's 50m backstroke and Brendon Smith came last in the men's 400m medley. O'Callaghan was Australia's most successful swimmer of the meet with three gold medals and two silvers, while backstroke queen McKeown repeated her feat from the Paris Games with a 100-200m backstroke golden double.

Disturbing Simon Goodwin incident singled out as reasons for $1.2m axing emerge
Fresh details have emerged about the reasons behind Simon Goodwin's axing as Melbourne coach, with the board's contrasting views on the state of the AFL club, and concerns for his wellbeing in the wake of a disturbing death threat cited as major factors. The 2021 premiership-winning coach was sacked on Tuesday after nine seasons at the Demons and with three games of the regular season still remaining. It came after a poor season for Melbourne, who sit in 12th on the ladder and are set to miss out on qualifying for the finals for a third successive year. The club's decision to part ways with Goodwin comes despite the fact he was signed on for another season in 2026, meaning the Demons will reportedly need to pay him out in excess of $1.2 million for terminating the contract. But AFL reporter Jon Ralph told Fox Footy on Wednesday night that the writing had been on the wall for months, following Melbourne's disastrous 0-5 start to the season. He revealed that last week's death threat on Goodwin 'took its toll' on the coach and his family, and that the Demons board did not want the 48-year-old to leave the club after hitting 'rock bottom' so they decided to act right away. Ralph also revealed that the board did not share Goodwin's optimism that they could be premiership contenders again next year, and that a parting of ways was the best thing for all parties. 'Simon Goodwin presented to that board on Monday night, it was all about how this club would compete for a premiership next year: 'We're so close, we can sniff it'," Ralph told Fox Footy's Midweek Tackle. 'That board was diametrically opposed to that view. They were crystal clear this was a club that needed some kind of step or two backwards before it pushed forward. 'So their path was different to his. Was he deluded? Was it blind faith? Somewhere in between? 'The other interesting sub-plot was the death threat to Goodwin last weekend. Hoax or not, it absolutely took its toll on Goodwin and his family. It also gave the Demons another reminder of the toll placed upon him. 'They didn't want him to go out rock bottom as a premiership coach. They could see he was never going to back down or quit, he was always going to forge on ahead to that next premiership. They almost had to make the decision for him. They're two key issues about why Goodwin was removed from his tenure.' RELATED: Abbey Holmes responds amid backlash over decision post-birth Eagles face decision as Victorian club 'not prepared' to pay Harley Reid Future of Demons stars questioned after Simon Goodwin axing Ralph pointed out that the $1.2 million owing to Goodwin after his sacking represents a 'costly' blow to Melbourne's soft cap and footy department spending. And the coach's departure has left the future of a number of Demons superstars under a massive cloud. Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver have both been at the centre of previous trade requests, Judd McVee is coming off contract and thought to be exploring his options, while Jake Lever was reportedly disgruntled after being dropped last month. And Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge questioned what Goodwin's sacking means for captain Max Gawn's future, given the pair had such a close relationship. "There's going to be murmurs and tough conversations and his (Gawn's) mindset now will be 'am I going to have a relationship with the next coach coming in, will I be able to lead as I am'?" Hodge said this week. 'Is this a door opening for Max Gawn? He would have had no thought of ever leaving Melbourne. "They guided him as a young fella into this absolute star of our game. With a new coach coming in, is this his time to say, 'is there a premiership somewhere else for me to go and play?'. It won't be an easy decision for him, but he has to talk to the club, who will want to keep him.'

Derrick White on Las Vegas Summer League, Olympics with his Boston Celtics teammates
The second episode of Boston Celtics point guard Derrick White is out. In the newest episode of the "White Noise" podcast, the University of Colorado - Boulder alum and his cohost Welsh took a deep dive into what White did last summer at the 2024 Paris Olympics on his way to winning a gold medal with the US National Team (and how he missed his own epic birthday bash in Baja California to do it). They also touch on Las Vegas Summer League and what it is like to play in it vs. attend as an established player or fan in the bleachers, meeting Deion Sanders at a Buffaloes game, and even a premature welcome for now-traded forward Georges Niang to the Celtics. They even get into the fact that White still has never gotten a technical foul in the NBA, and why at least one of his teammates in Boston won't fully respect him until he does. Check it out below! Rival NRL clubs on notice after Munster update as young gun's Storm future in doubt
Player agent Braith Anasta has moved to quell the links of his star five-eighth Cameron Munster leaving Melbourne having suggested he wants to remain in the city, which comes as a blow to young star Jonah Pezet. Speculation over Munster's future took a turn the last week when Jahrome Hughes re-signed with the Melbourne Storm to remain until the end of 2030. With Hughes' extension there were suggestions it was unlikely the Storm could hold onto all three of Munster, Harry Grant and Ryan Papenhuzyen with the club's salary cap under a squeeze. To make matters more interesting, young halfback Pezet has been biding his time under the halves duo. Although Hughes' new deal meant Pezet could now negotiate with other clubs due to a clause in his contract. However, there were suggestions he could still bide his time if Munster was tempted to leave and join the Perth Bears on a lucrative contract. Coach Craig Bellamy was asked about Munster's future at Melbourne and said he would like his star playmaker to remain. While Munster has been continually linked as a marquee signing for the new club, entering the competition in 2027, his agent has moved to quell the hype. Speaking on NRL 360, Anasta said Munster isn't set to leave Melbourne before his deal ends and it's all just speculation at the moment. While Anasta didn't completely rule out the circumstances changing, he said Munster is keen to see out his deal until the end of the 2027 season and potentially stay for even longer. "It's probably right for me to clear a few things up and talk on behalf of the situation," Anasta said. "Cameron doesn't want to leave Melbourne and Melbourne don't want to let him go. At the moment, it's really just all speculation. "One thing is for sure, I'm not shopping him to Perth and I'm not allowed to shop him to Perth. It's a unique situation, because you've got a new franchise which doesn't come along too often and they could have possible interest in him. Then you've got the Melbourne Storm, who are trying to fit five or six superstars into their salary cap. "As it stands right now, it is just speculation and the scenario as it is, nothing is gonna change. He is gonna be at Melbourne for the next couple of years and that's it." This is a huge blow to the Bears who appear they will have to find another marquee signing to start their inaugural season. With Hughes and Munster appearing off the cards, the Bears will need to find another halves star to throw the money at for 2027 and beyond. Jonah Pezet in limbo at Melbourne Storm And Anasta's comments about his player also come as a blow to Pezet. Incredibly, Anasta is also Pezet's agent and is working out what is best for both his players in a tricky situation. The 22-year-old is expected to get more game time in the next few weeks with Hughes out injured with a shoulder dislocation. But many feel Pezet should be starting in the NRL. A loan deal has been tossed around as a potential game-changer for Pezet. This would be similar to what Harry Grant did when he was biding his time behind Cameron Smith. Although Pezet would need to know if Munster is planning on re-signing beyond his 2027 deal. RELATED: Stunning news about Latrell Mitchell as Bennett axing divides NRL hits Wests Tigers player with fine over 'offensive' gesture And the youngster broke his silence this week having claimed he is keen on playing more minutes in the NRL. "I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to play NRL every week," Pezet said. "As a kid you grow up and that's what you want to do. So of course I want to chase those opportunities. But I'm just focused on putting my best foot forward every week, so that's when Belza (coach Craig Bellamy) picks me in the team." When pushed on what a potential loan deal would be like, Pezet remained coy and said he would leave that up to his manager. "I think I'll leave that up to Braith and everyone at the club ... they'll sort it all out," Pezet said. "With Hughesy going down there's an opportunity there, and I'll keep putting my best foot forward so that when the time comes I'm ready for that wherever it might be. Obviously the best footy I play, the more NRL I'm going to get, so that's what I'm focused on."
