Falcon-9's liquid-oxygen leak plagues Indian astronaut's space launch: What is it?
Hours before Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla was planned to strap into the Dragon spacecraft for a historic launch to the International Space Station, the mission stands postponed with no next launch date.SpaceX announced on Wednesday, hours before the planned launch, that the teams require more time to repair the LOx (Liquid-oxygen) leak identified during post-static fire booster inspections."Standing down from tomorrow's Falcon 9 launch of Ax-4 to the Space Station to allow additional time for SpaceX teams to repair the LOx leak identified during post static fire booster inspections. Once complete – and pending Range availability – we will share a new launch date," SpaceX tweeted.advertisement
The Ax-4 mission was initially planned to launch on May 29 but was delayed to June 8 and then to June 10. It was postponed to June 11 due to weather issues and high winds in the launch area.Falcon rocket's liquid oxygen leak delays launchLatest input by @imsktripathi #ITVideo #Space #ShubhanshuShukla #Axiom4 | (@Akshita_N) pic.twitter.com/y9rVcyyA2X— IndiaToday (@IndiaToday) June 11, 2025WHAT IS LIQUID-OXYGEN? Liquid oxygen (LOX) is a supercooled form of oxygen, stored at -183C, and is used as an oxidizer in rockets like SpaceX's Falcon 9.Since space lacks atmospheric oxygen, rockets must carry their own oxidizer to burn fuel. Falcon 9 combines LOX with RP-1, a refined form of kerosene, to power its Merlin engines. When mixed and ignited, this combination produces the high-pressure thrust needed to lift the rocket into orbit.

advertisementLOX is highly reactive and supports rapid combustion, making it essential for efficient rocket propulsion. Any leak or malfunction involving LOX can seriously impact launch safety and timing.WHAT'S THE ISSUE? SpaceX had noticed a leak from the booster during the static fire test that was conducted on June 9.It is worth mentioning that the Falcon-9 being used to launch the newly developed Dragon spacecraft, had launched previously. SpaceX used the booster to launch a batch of Starlink satellites a few weeks back. Following its landing, it was refurbished and integrated with the Dragon spacecraft before moving to the launch pad at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.SpaceX initially stated that they were installing a purge to fix the leak, but it appears that it did not work.' #India Today's @imsktripathi explains the significance of this mission from India's perspective.@ISRO #Super6 | @Akshita_N pic.twitter.com/hPpANNvoy8— IndiaToday (@IndiaToday) June 10, 2025Now, that the launch has been postponed, there are chances that SpaceX might need to remove the Falcon-9 entirely from the pad and get it horizontal to fix the issue. That would mean a bigger delay in the launch that could stretch into the next week."It is understood that LOX leakage was detected in the propulsion bay during the test. Based on the discussion between the Isro team and experts from Axiom and SpaceX, it has been decided to correct the leak and conduct necessary validation tests before clearing the launch. Hence the launch of Axiom-4 slated for 11th June 2025 for sending the first Indian Gaganyatri to ISS is postponed," Isro said.At the moment, SpaceX has yet to give a final launch date for the Ax-4 mission.Tune InMust Watch

Mercedes-Benz India redefines luxury with hyper-personalisation & India-specific innovations
Mercedes-Benz India is betting on hyper-personalisation and electrification, with a focus on Indian technology, to enhance its appeal and drive growth in the country's burgeoning luxury car market , the company's top official said. The Germany-based luxury carmaker is offering a hyper-personalisation programme--the Manufacturer Program , including ' Manufaktur '--which allows buyers to customise their vehicles as per their preferences. 'Under this programme, 75 per cent of the customers who buy a car personalise it through the Manufacturer Program, for which they are willing to pay between ₹60 lakh to ₹1.5 crore,' Santosh Iyer , Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, told ETAuto . India's growing affluent customer base is giving rise to the trend of bespoke luxury vehicles. Beyond physical personalisation, digital features such as 'Routines'—an AI-driven car element based on customer habits—are reinforcing this shift. Following the same philosophy, the luxury carmaker today launched the Mercedes-AMG G 63 'Collector's Edition' at ₹4.3 crore. Only 30 units of the limited edition will be available exclusively to existing customers. Staying ahead with Indian technology This launch also marks the first Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India's (MBRDI)contribution to the Mercedes Benz limited edition model, underscoring the company's growing focus on local product development. MBRDI, headquartered in Bengaluru, is at the forefront of integrating advanced technologies such as AI and Gen AI in car manufacturing--from chip-to-cloud operating systems to customer-facing features. 'From the technical involvement across all aspects of engineering, we believe there's hardly any area of research untouched by Indian engineers today,' said Manu Saale, MD and CEO, MBRDI. With its growing engineering capabilities, India is playing a critical role in global automotive innovation that is expected to impact next-generation vehicles worldwide. Aligning with EVs With thegrowing adoption of electric vehicles in the country, the carmaker has kept pace with the trend. Mercedes-Benz India has reported a 73 per cent growth in luxury EV sales from January to May, outpacing the overall industry growth, said Iyer. This EV momentum is driven by top-end models such as the EQS SUV, EQE, and EQS Maybach. Currently, the company does not compete in the entry-level EV segment. 'The brand aims to maintain the DNA of performance (AMG) while offering the benefits of electrification (EQ), showcasing features like the 'G-Turn' in the electric G-Class,' the management added. On the growth front, the German manufacturer expects to report flat to single-digit growth in 2025, in line with earlier projections. This outlook is influenced by factors such as exchange rates, geopolitical concerns, and more.

What are ‘water bears', tiny animals accompanying astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to space? They can survive extreme temperatures, radiation and…, are found in…
Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is taking tardigrades or water bears abord the ISS. (File) Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla was poised to become the second Indian to step aboard the International Space Station (ISS). But the historic Axiom-4 mission, which was scheduled to carry Shukla and three others to space, was delayed once again on Tuesday (June 10) to fix a leak in the SpaceX's Falcon-9 rocket. According to reports, Shubhanshu Shukla will have some unique passengers alongside him when the Axiom-4 mission gets a new launch date from SpaceX, tiny microscopic animals known as Tardigrades or 'water bears', which will be experimented upon aboard the ISS. The experiments are aimed at strengthening India's future space endeavors, including the ambitious Indian Space Station and the Gaganyaan mission, as per officials. What are Tardigrades and why were they chosen for this mission? Tardigrades, aka water bears or moss piglets, are a species of eight-legged segmented micro-animals that are known for the ability to survive in the harshest of environments, including high temperatures, and the extreme radiation and vacuum of outer space. First described by German zoologist Johann August Ephraim Goeze in 1773, who called these creatures 'Kleiner Wasserbär' or 'little water bear', tardigrades are known to have existed on Earth for nearly 600 million years, and have survived all five major mass extinction events the have occurred in the planet's history so far. According to scientists, the experiments are aimed to understand how tardigrades survive in the harsh environment of space, so strategies can be developed to keep astronauts safe during long-duration space missions. An adult tardigrade usually measures about 0.5 mm in length, and has four pairs of legs, with with 4 to 6 claw-like appendages on each leg. These creatures have a unique mouth-like appendage that helps the feed on plant cells, algae and other small invertebrates, by sucking out their nutrients. Where are tardigrades found? Tardigrades are extremophiles, which means they are able to survive in every possible biosphere found on Earth, including mountaintops, the deep sea, tropical rainforests, and even the Antarctic region. As per scientists, tardigrades are among the most resilient animals known to man, able to survive extreme conditions such as extreme temperatures of as low as -272.95 degrees Celsius and as high as 150 degrees Celsius. These hardy creatures can also withstand extreme ultraviolet radiation of outer space, and pressure of up to 40,000 kilopascals (equivalent to the pressure experienced at a depth of 4 km below the sea surface). Scientists believe that a better understanding of the tardigrade physiology could have wide-ranging applications for the betterment of humankind, including developing more resilient crops, powerful sunscreens, and the preservation of human tissue and organs for transplant. Tardigrades also produce intrinsically disordered proteins in response to desiccation, which forms a glass-like matrix that protects cytoplasm from damage during desiccation, as per scientists.
