Dhumma has his way: Jathedar skips annual message
In a break from a 40-year-old tradition, Akal Takht's acting Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargajj did not deliver the annual customary message to the community on Operation Blue Star anniversary,
to avoid any controversy with Panthic bodies. Gargajj, however he preformed the 'ardas' (prayer according to Sikh rituals) to mark the event.
Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhumma had earlier opposed Gargajj's appointment as the acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht saying it was in violation of 'maryada' and 'panthic traditions'.
During the ardas, the Jathedar said this pious spiritual place (Golden Temple and Akal Takht) should never be a place of turmoil as everybody wants peace here. He also raised several issues, including the 'targeting of Sikhs in India and abroad,' the concept of a 'Sikh homeland,' and 'discrimination against Sikhs.'
Gargajj prayed for strength, unity, harmony, and togetherness within the Khalsa Panth and sought blessings for the community to follow in the footsteps of the community's warriors and martyrs. Speaking to the media later, Gargajj expressed strong objection to 'the planned events being held in Batala city under the name 'crusade', in the context of religious conversions'.
He said, 'Punjab is the land sanctified by the Sikh Gurus, and seeds of hatred must not be sown here. There is the need for the Sikh community to respond to this issue with compassion and to embrace those who have drifted toward other faiths.' Earlier, Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), honoured the family members of the Sikhs who were killed along with Jarnail singh Bhindranwale in the Golden Temple complex during the Army action in June 1984. According to tradition, it was the Akal Takht Jathedar who every year honours the families of those who were killed in the Army action. According to sources, it was decided in a series of meetings Jathedar Gargajj would neither deliver the annual message nor offer the siropa (robe of honour) to the families of those who died in 1984.
When asked if he has scored a victory by not allowing Gargajj to issue message to the community, Dhuma said that he was not in favor of making such claims because that would be a form of arrogance, which is not acceptable in the Guru's house.
He added that in the near future, all Panthic organisations will sit together and deliberate on the process of appointing Jathedars. He said that if the SGPC appoints the Jathedars of the Takhts with the consensus of all Sikh organisations, then there will be no dispute. Disputes arise only when the Panth is not taken into confidence, he said.
It is not first time that Jathedar has faced the opposition. It was, however, the first time when SGPC was not seen standing with the Jathedar.
Former Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh too had faced huge opposition from the community after he issued pardon to Dera Sacha Sauda head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in 2015. SGPC made sure that he was allowed to issue his annual message on the occasions of Diwali and Operation Blue Star anniversaries. Gurbachan Singh resigned in 2018 and was replaced by the Giani Harpreet Singh, who gained the confidence of community.
Meanwhile, Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann heaped praise on Gargajj said, saying that despite the restrictions, the Jathedar 'conveyed his message emphasising the need for a Sikh homeland and raising concerns over the ongoing massacre of Sikhs abroad'.
Mann also condemned the 'forces' that barred Jathedar from delivering his annual message.

Tinder account under scanner: Punjab police probe dating app profile suspected to be linked to Amritpal Singh
Punjab Police have reached out to dating app Tinder for information on an account suspected to be connected to Amritpal Singh, the Khadoor Sahib MP, currently booked for the murder of Sikh activist Gurpreet Singh Hari Nau. The police have asked Tinder to provide user data including the account holder's name, date of birth, phone number, IP logs (since January 1, 2019), location data, email addresses, chat records, contacts, photographs, and media files associated with the account. According to the Faridkot police, Gurpreet Singh—a member of Amritpal's 'Waris Punjab De' outfit and vocal critic of Amritpal Singh—was shot dead on October 9, 2024, while returning home from a village Gurdwara, reported PTI. The case is being probed under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav had earlier alleged that the murder was carried out at Amritpal's behest. Authorities also claim gangster-turned-terrorist Arshdeep Singh alias Arsh Dalla masterminded the killing, as per PTI. Two shooters have already been arrested in connection with the crime. In a letter dated May 26, accessed by PTI, Punjab Police formally requested Tinder's assistance, stating: 'On October 9, 2024, Gurpreet Singh, an online activist who managed the Facebook page 'Hari Nau Talks' and was outspoken against Amritpal Singh, was murdered by two motorcycle-borne assailants. During the investigation, a Tinder profile under the name 'Amrit Sandhu' was discovered and is suspected to be linked to the primary accused, Amritpal Singh.' Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Assam's Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), rose to prominence for reviving pro-Khalistan rhetoric and modelling himself after slain militant leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Singh and nine aides were detained under the NSA in 2023. (with inputs from agencies)

Lucknow, Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the state on Saturday with people offering namaaz amidst tight security. In the state capital, namaaz was offered at the Lucknow Eidgah under the Shahi Imam of Lucknow, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali. After offering namaaz, prayers were made for the safety of the jawans posted at the borders and safeguarding the country. In a video message, Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, on Saturday, reminded the Muslim community to follow the advisory issued by the Islamic Centre of India and sacrifice only those animals on which there are no bans, adding that sacrifice should take place at the designated spots." "The blood of the sacrificed animal should not be released in drains, and the waste should be disposed of as per the arrangements made by the Municipal Corporation. After offering namaaz, one should pray for the development and safety of the nation and also for the Army jawans safeguarding our borders," he said. UP's Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Thursday issued directives ensuring the peaceful and safe observance of the festival across the state. The police implemented a multi-pronged strategy, focusing on preventive measures, community engagement and heightened vigilance, with police stations thoroughly reviewing their festival registers to prevent the initiation of any new traditions. Harsimrat urges Jaishankar to sensitise UAE on ‘kirpan' ban advisory
Bathinda SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday appealed to external affairs minister S Jaishankar to sensitise the United Arab Emirates (UAE) government about the Sikh articles of faith, particularly regarding the wearing of the kirpan and kataar. Her appeal came in response to a recent advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in the UAE, cautioning Indian citizens against carrying sharp objects in line with Article 405 of the UAE penal law. The advisory has led to 'deep distress and mental agony' among Sikh residents and travellers, as the kirpan, a sacred article of faith, falls under the category of restricted items. In her letter, Badal cited increasing instances of Sikhs being detained or forced to remove their kirpan and kataar in the UAE. She referenced a recent case in which an elderly Sikh man was reportedly detained in Abu Dhabi for wearing his kirpan and turban, incidents she said have caused 'mental agony' to the global Sikh community. 'The kirpan is not a weapon of violence but a spiritual and symbolic emblem of justice and responsibility as mandated by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Denying Sikhs the right to wear their five kakkars, especially the kirpan, is a serious infringement on their religious freedom,' she said. Badal called on the ministry of external affairs to send a high-level delegation, including members of the National Commission for Minorities and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), to hold constructive dialogue with the authorities in the UAE and international agencies. The aim would be to sensitise them about Sikh beliefs and ensure respect for religious practices. She emphasised the positive contribution of the Sikh community globally, including in the UAE, and underlined that mutual respect for religious identity was essential in upholding India's values of pluralism and diversity.
