Fauja Singh, often celebrated as the "Turbaned Tornado", died on July 14 at the age of 114 after being hit by a vehicle in Jalandhar, Punjab while taking a walk outside his home in Beas village. Considered as one of the "oldest marathons in the world", Fauja Singh was born in 1911, and he defied age and expectations by running marathons even after turning 100. His impressive stamina and longevity have fascinated both athletes and scientists. One of the key factors he attributed to his endurance was a simple vegetarian diet. "I'm the oldest marathon runner in the world. Just three weeks after my 101st birthday, I ran the London Marathon in seven hours and 49 minutes. I've completed eight other marathons in the past 12 years, including the Toronto Waterfront Marathon, which I ran when I was 100 years old. How do I do it? Simple: firstly, I eat only vegetarian foods," Fauja Singh wrote in a blog for He also believed that vegetarians tend to live 6-10 years longer than meat-eaters do. Well, studies have also found that vegetarians may live longer than non-vegetarians. Along with eating vegetarian foods such as chapati, dal, sabji, and saag, he also said, "I also walk or jog every day. Age may bring wisdom, but if you want stamina, endurance, and a lifetime of good health, turn to nutritious vegetarian foods." He also shared, "I've been predominantly vegetarian my whole life. In the Sikh religion, we eat to live, not live to eat. In Punjab, the green belt of India where I'm originally from, most people eat what they grow – I attribute my longevity to simple Punjabi vegetarian foods".

World's oldest marathon runner, dies at 114 in hit-and-run accident

LONDON, July 16, (AP): Fauja Singh, an Indian-born runner nicknamed the Turbaned Torpedo who was believed to be the world's oldest marathon runner, has died after being hit by a car. He was 114. Local media in India reported that Singh sustained severe head injuries in a hit-and-run accident on Monday while he was crossing the road at his native village near Jalandhar in Punjab. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. His London-based running club and charity, Sikhs In The City, confirmed his death. India's Prime minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Singh, saying he was "extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness.' Singh became the oldest man to run a full marathon in 2011 at the age of 100 in Toronto. His accomplishment was not recognized by Guinness World Records because he did not have a birth certificate to prove his age. Singh had a British passport that showed his date of birth as April 1, 1911, while a letter from Indian government officials stated that birth records were not kept in 1911. A torchbearer for the 2012 London Olympics, Singh took up running at the age of 89 as a way to get over depression after his wife and son died in quick succession in India. The death in 1994 of his son took a particularly hard toll on him because of its grisly nature. Singh and his son, Kuldip, both farmers, were checking on their fields in the middle of a storm when a piece of corrugated metal blown by the wind decapitated Kuldip in front of his father's eyes. Singh, whose five other children had emigrated, was left all alone. "He didn't think his life was worth living without his son' following the traumatic incident, his coach Harmander Singh said. He went to live with his youngest son in London. That's where sports enthusiast Singh attended tournaments organized by the Sikh community and took part in sprints. He met some Sikh marathon runners who encouraged him to take up long-distance running. One day he saw a marathon on television for the first time and decided that's what he wanted to do. At the age of 89 in 2000 he ran the London Marathon, his first, and went on to do eight more. His best time was 5 hours and 40 minutes at the 2003 Toronto Marathon. "From a tragedy has come a lot of success and happiness,' Singh said. Singh ran his last competitive race in 2013 at the age of 101, finishing the Hong Kong Marathon's 10-kilometer (6.25-mile) race in 1 hour, 32 minutes, 28 seconds. Following his retirement from racing, he said he hoped "people will remember me and not forget me.' He also wanted people to continue to invite him to events "rather than forget me altogether just because I don't run anymore.' "He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination,' Modi said. "Pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and countless admirers around the world.'

'Learnt About It From News': Canada-Based Man Held For Hit-And-Run Of Fauja Singh

The tragic incident occurred on Monday in Bias village in Punjab's Jalandhar district, where Fauja Singh was walking along the Jalandhar–Pathankot highway. A Canada-based man arrested for allegedly running over Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathoner, has told the police he was unaware of the victim's identity until he saw the news, reported NDTV. The accused, Amritpal Singh Dhillon (26), claimed during interrogation that he learned the 114-year-old man he had fatally hit was a global sporting icon only after the incident was reported in the media. Dhillon was arrested on Tuesday night from his residence in Kartarpur, Punjab, after being tracked through CCTV footage and fragments of his Toyota Fortuner's headlight recovered from the accident site. The vehicle, which had reportedly changed hands multiple times, was also seized. The tragic incident occurred on Monday in Bias village in Punjab's Jalandhar district, where Fauja Singh was walking along the Jalandhar–Pathankot highway. According to eyewitnesses, Singh was flung five to seven feet in the air after being struck by the speeding SUV. He succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Speaking at a press conference, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harvinder Singh Virk said Dhillon was speeding at the time of the accident as he was 'in a hurry for some work." The accused also told police he had replaced one of the tyres of his SUV on the day of the incident. 'He got scared after hitting Fauja Singh and did not stop the car at the spot," Virk said, adding, 'It was his responsibility to stop and take the victim to a hospital." Police confirmed that Dhillon had returned to India from Canada on June 23. He had initially gone abroad on a tourist visa and later acquired a work permit valid until 2027. An FIR has been registered against him under Sections 281 (rash driving) and 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The death of Fauja Singh, affectionately known as the 'Turbaned Tornado," has triggered an outpouring of grief across the nation and the global Sikh community. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini all paid tribute to the legendary athlete, hailing his legacy and inspirational life. The Punjab Assembly also honoured Singh with a condolence motion on the final day of its special session. Born in 1911 in a farming family, Fauja Singh defied all odds to begin his marathon career at the age of 89. He later became the first centenarian to complete a full marathon, earning multiple age-group world records. His accomplishments in cities like London, New York, Toronto, and Hong Kong turned him into a symbol of resilience, health, and inspiration for generations. In 2011, an invitational marathon in Toronto was named in his honour, where he set several records at the age of 100. After spending most of his later years in the UK, Singh returned to India about three years ago. Just last year, he joined Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria in a symbolic walkathon to raise awareness about drug abuse. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
