But further rises are on the horizon. The price of the TV licence might have only just seen an increase a couple of months ago - but a further rise could soon be on the horizon. A five pound rise kicked-in back in April and you might not have yet felt it hit your pocket. Launched back in the 20th century, the licence fee goes towards the funding of the BBC. It is required for watching live TV or using the Beeb's on demand service - iPlayer. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Under the BBC's current royal charter, prices are set to rise annually next year and again in 2027. The government is currently exploring a number of ways of continuing funding for the national broadcaster, with announcements expected in due course. When could the price of your TV licence go up again? TV licence is expected to rise again in 2026 | ANNA KURTH/AFP via Getty Images The most recent BBC charter, which details how the broadcaster is funded, took effect on January 1 2017 and is set to run until December 31 2027. It includes price rises baked in each year based around inflation - however there was a two year freeze that was introduced between 2022 and 2024. The most recent price rise came in April this year (2025) and further rises are expected over the next two years. The cost of your TV licence is expected to rise again in April 2026, to coincide with the start of a new financial year. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Expect further announcements later this year which will reveal exactly how much the price will rise by. For 2025, the annual cost went up £5 to £174.50 from £169.50. One of the ideas being considered for the licence fee post-December 2027 is for it to be means tested based on house price costs. We have an interview about this idea in the video at the top of this article. How has the TV licence changed over the years? The licence fee was actually first introduced back in 1922 and originally it covered just radios. It cost 10 shillings at the time - which was about half a pound back then. Following the advent of the television, the licence fee started to cover TVs back in 1946 and it cost £2 for a monochrome tele. According to the Bank of England's inflation calculator this would be the equivalent of £72.20 in today's money. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The price of the licence fee was frozen for seven years between April 2010 and 2017 - before the current royal charter kicked in. Since the latest funding agreement came into force, the cost has increased by almost £30 in the eight years from April 2017 to 2025 - going from £147 to £174.50. However, according to the Bank of England's inflation calculator the cost of the licence fee back in 2017 would be the equivalent of £195.85 in today's money. So, your wallet is not being hit as hard as it could be.

Wayne Rooney confirms next career move with Man Utd legend linked with host of vacant manager's jobs

WAYNE ROONEY has confirmed his next career move after being linked with a host of managerial jobs. The Manchester United legend, 39, has been out of work since leaving Plymouth midway through the season. 2 2 Rooney, who has also taken charge of Derby and Birmingham, lasted just seven months at Argyle following five wins in 25 matches. But the former Three Lions captain was all smiles as he turned out at Soccer Aid on Sunday. Rooney was player-manager of an England XI and scored the fastest goal in the charity match's history. He ended up on the losing side though, with former United teammate Carlos Tevez netting four goals to help a World XI seal a 5-4 comeback win. The good cause ended up raising an incredible £15million for Unicef. And speaking after the match, Rooney gave fans an insight into his next career move. The five-time Premier League winner has been linked with a host of jobs, including Blackburn Rovers and Cambridge United. However, Wazza revealed that he does not plan on returning to the dugout any time soon. That's because he is loving life as a TV pundit after returning to screens with Amazon Prime Video this year. Reflecting on the direction of his career, Rooney told talkSPORT: 'I'm obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that's what I'm doing. 'I'm enjoying it, so that's where I'll be.' Looking back at England's Soccer Aid defeat, Rooney added: 'We knew it was always going to be a tough game. 'They had some really good players in the team. But I thought it was a good game for everyone who came to watch. 'Unfortunately we didn't win, obviously that was the fun, but the main reason we're all here today is to try and raise money.'

Let this adult star take you through nooks and crannies of new online safety law

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video It's long, it's hard, and now one of the UK's most popular adult film stars has spent 26 minutes tackling it in a hotel room. We're talking, of course, about the Online Safety Act. The law, passed under the Tories two years ago, will soon dramatically change the way randy Brits access porn online. And Ivy Maddox is so keen for the public to pay attention to the ins and outs of the legislation, she spent almost half an hour reading every word of a government explainer out loud for a new video. Titled 'Coming Soon…', the short film is described as Ivy's most 'explicit' yet. It features the actress in a skimpy lace bodysuit, sitting on the edge of a hotel bed beside a hardback copy of the Act. Craig Munro breaks down Westminster chaos into easy to follow insight, walking you through what the latest policies mean to you. Sign up here. She warns viewers that the safe-for-work film they're about to watch will 'include some very big legal obligations', and asks them: 'Are you ready for full compliance?' It's quite a lot to get your chops around, but the meat of the matter is this: from July 25, all websites, apps and other online services hosting online material will need to have age checks in place. That will mean you may need to provide your email address, credit card details, or even a picture of your face to get access to your favourite porn site. If the owners fail to comply with the law, Ofcom can impose fines of up to £18 million or 10% of their qualifying worldwide revenue. Last month, Ofcom said 'most of the largest services' that produce their own porn content have already 'confirmed that they are implementing or have plans to implement age assurance imminently'. But Ivy thought it was important to get the word out there regardless. She told Metro: 'As someone who interacted with hardcore porn by accident when I was in school, I wouldn't want children to view my content – the same way I didn't want to when I was their age. More Trending 'I also thought age verification was an important topic to raise awareness of, as I know that, for the adult and sex worker industry, privacy and compliance are key.' The video was produced in partnership with age check provider Verifymy, which uses services such as email-based age estimation to tell businesses how old their users are. Ivy added: 'It's not my everyday content, but I'm always up for a challenge.' The full film is available to watch online at this link. Don't worry – you won't need to open Incognito mode.
