Peter Andre says he faced a 'hard challenge' filming Jafaican movie amid race row backlash
Peter Andre said he faced a 'hard challenge' filming controversial movie Jafaican - which has been branded 'profoundly disrespectful' amid an ongoing 'race row' backlash. The All About Us singer, 52, has now discussed how he prepared for the 'challenging' role, which required him to wear dreadlocks and adopt a Jamaican accent to play con artist Gary Buckle. The Mysterious Girl hitmaker also plays Denton 'Kill Man' Powell in Fred Nwaka's blockbuster, which was released at Odeon cinemas on May 20. 'I think that with the Jamaican side of it, the Patois parts were dubbed over by a Jamaican actor but instead of me miming over the Patois, I had to learn all the [words] that were delivered on screen,' he told the Daily Star in a recent interview. 'They dubbed over me, so that was a real challenge but it was one that I absolutely loved doing.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. The British-Australian TV star revealed he 'loved' playing Gary because he 'really felt the character'. He added: 'Playing Denton I found really a great challenge, I absolutely loved that character. 'I loved the seriousness of him, the tone changes and it was a brilliant part to play.' The I'm A Celebrity alum has under fire publicly, and defended his choice to take on the controversial during a recent appearance on This Morning. Peter appeared on the sofa alongside director and friend Fredi to chat to Alison Hammond, 52, and Dermot O'Lear y, 51 - with plenty of fans raising complaints. During his appearance on This Morning, Peter and Fredi opened up about the three-year process of creating the film, and how much thought had gone into it and how surprised they have been over the negative comments about it. Peter said to Alison and Dermot: 'If at any point where anyone said "This is not right, we shouldn't do it"... 'That's why we were shocked. We had approval from everyone, we laughed. Laughed so much doing it. We were a little bit like...' 'They dubbed over me, so that was a real challenge but it was one that I absolutely loved doing,' he told the Daily Star recently (pictured on This Morning last week) He added: 'I've always said if someone is genuinely offended by something, you need to hear them. 'The problem is when you get people that are offended, but they you go "What are you offended about?" 'And they're like...' The pair urged viewers to go and watch the film for themselves to make their own opinion on it, rather than just viewing the trailer. Those watching at home flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts on it all. Last week, Peter accused the critics of 'not knowing what they're offended by' after they condemned his Jamaican accent in the 'profoundly disrespectful' new movie. In his first interview since the film's UK release on Wednesday, Peter defended his first starring role and accused critics of 'not knowing what they're offended by.' Peter told Judge Rob Rinder and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown on the Jeremy Vine show: 'I think there are three types of people. 'There are people that get offended about anything. 'There are people genuinely offended and their voices should definitely be heard - I always think that - but you've also got an area of people that are offended, but when you ask them what they're offended about, they don't know.' Peter too mentioned the fact that he suffered racism during his younger years as a Greek boy emigrating Down Under. 'I'm a Greek kid that grew up in Australia in the late seventies,' he said. 'We were picked on, we were called greasy s**t. I mean, even our teachers used to call us that. We went through horrific racism. 'Now when I watch a film about someone playing a Greek guy with the curly hair, the big nose, the medallion, the hairy chest, and he's coming up and he's doing the Greek accent, I find that hilarious. 'If someone is saying something horrific about our culture, I find that racist. So for me, I feel things are a bit muddied. You know, this is comedy. I'm acting in a film. I loved it. It's the kind of films that I loved watching when I was growing up.' Despite the negative opinions, many have shared their love on Instagram, after Peter shared some footage from the world premiere of the film in Australia earlier this month. Earlier this month Peter was supported by his older children Princess, 17, and Junior, 19 - who he shares with ex Katie Price - as they attended a special screening of the movie in London on Tuesday. Jafaican's IMBD synopsis reads: 'Gazza, a small-time crook, seeks £35,000 for his gran's care. He overhears a tip, devising a scheme. 'In 21 days, he must master Jamaican culture to execute a fraud in London and Jamaica, facing life-threatening risks.' It stars Peter as Gary Bucke, Wil Johnson as Winston, Oliver Samuels as Uncle Godfrey, Sizzle Kalonji as Sizzla, Jamie Lomas as Johnzie and Bradley Turner as Kevin.

Shah Rukh Khan And Kajol's Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge Statue Gets Erected In London
Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" will be honored with a statue in London's Leicester Square, celebrating the film's 30-year legacy. Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's 1995 blockbuster 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (DDLJ) by Yash Raj Films is set to become the first ever statue honouring Indian cinema to be erected in London's Leicester Square. The bronze statue will showcase SRK and Kajol, in an iconic DDLJ pose. Set to be unveiled in Spring this year, the announcement spotlights how the film is loved by the over five million strong British South Asian community. On Wednesday, the Heart of London Business Alliance announced that Yash Raj Films' DDLJ statue will be joining the 'Scenes in the Square' movie trail in Leicester Square. This will mark the start of 30-year celebrations of the romantic film, which marked the directorial debut of Aditya Chopra. 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" follows two non-resident Indians, Raj and Simran, and their star-crossed love story across Europe and India, beginning on a train from King's Cross Station. The location couldn't be more fitting, with Leicester Square featuring in DDLJ in a scene when Raj and Simran first cross paths, albeit unbeknown to one another, before setting off on their European adventure. The scene features two of the square's cinemas prominently, with Raj seen in front of the Vue cinema, and Simran walking past the Odeon Leicester Square. The new statue will be positioned along the eastern terrace, outside the Odeon cinema, honouring this scene. Other London locations featured in the film include Horseguards Avenue, Hyde Park, Tower Bridge and King's Cross Station. In the UK, the film's cultural significance remains, with a new musical based on DDLJ, Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical, set to start at the Manchester Opera House on May 29, 2025. DDLJ will be next to iconic film characters like Harry Potter, Laurel & Hardy, Bugs Bunny, Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain, Mary Poppins, Mr. Bean, Paddington and DC Super-Heroes Batman and Wonder Woman. Mark Williams, Deputy Chief Executive at Heart of London Business Alliance, says: 'It's fantastic to have the opportunity to add to our trail Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who are such titans of international cinema." 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is one of the most successful and important Bollywood films of all time, and we're excited by the prospect of bringing to the trail the first film that actually features Leicester Square as a location. The statue is a fitting tribute to the global popularity of Bollywood and a celebration of London's rich diversity. We're in no doubt it will attract fans from all around the world to Leicester Square, the home of film and entertainment." Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, added: 'When Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) was released 30 years ago, the film became a defining moment for Indian cinema and changed the face of the industry, capturing the hearts of everyone who saw it all over the globe. We're thrilled to be the first Indian film to be represented in 'Scenes in the Square'." 'It also marks 30 years of DDLJ, a film that has spread love and joy globally and shows the cultural impact it has had in the UK." 'We are honoured that our superstars and our film are being recognized on the world stage alongside the Hollywood elite, from Gene Kelly to Laurel & Hardy to Harry Potter." First Published:

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Odeon has confirmed that its Bracknell cinema location will close its doors for the last time at the end of May. Odeon released a statement to confirm the news, saying: 'Following talks with our landlord, we have come to a mutual agreement to close our Bracknell cinema at the end of May this year. "Supporting our local cinema team is our number one priority and we will be looking to secure jobs for as many of them as possible at our other cinema locations. Read more: Martin Lewis slams Winter Fuel Payment decision and says 'broken' "We would like to thank our guests for all their support over the years.' Cinema lovers shared their dismay over the news on social media, with one writing: "Such a shame. I always chose this cinema over the others because it was affordable and very nostalgic. I'm not surprised it's going, though. "The escalators have been out of use for such a long time, and it never seemed all that busy. Thanks for the memories, Odeon Bracknell!" Another added: "Terrible news. £5 cinema tickets for every film if you create an account, made cinema affordable and accessible to more families. Now, more than double the price with alternatives." Odeon isn't alone in closing locations in 2025, as Cineworld previously announced it is shutting the doors of several locations this year. Back in December, it confirmed that the Weymouth branch was set to close on 30th December. The chain also confirmed five other axed locations: Castleford Leigh Middlesbrough Northampton Poole Javier Sotomayor, president of Cineworld International, said: "The successful completion of our restructuring plan, achieved with the crucial support of our landlords, protects thousands of jobs across the UK and provides us with the financial stability to continue investing in delivering extraordinary experiences for our valued customers. "This milestone sets the stage for a brighter future, enabling Cineworld to continue sharing joy in communities across the UK for many years to come." Cineworld said it plans to invest around £35m across its locations, particularly in refurbishing existing cinemas after it improved its financial position by also securing additional funds, including £40m in liquidity.

Cinema chain with over 100 locations across the UK to shut doors on major site for good in DAYS
A CINEMA chain with more than 100 locations across the UK is preparing to close one of its major sites for good — and locals are gutted. Odeon Cinemas has confirmed it will shut its Bracknell branch on June 1, leaving fans scrambling to find affordable alternatives and marking the end of an era for local moviegoers. 3 3 News of the closure sparked a wave of disappointment online. One Facebook user wrote: 'Just had an email to say the Odeon in Bracknell is closing on the 1st of June. "Goodbye cheap cinema tickets. What other cinemas do people use that don't cost the earth?' Other cinema fans were quick to share their heartbreak. One commented: 'Gutted.' Another offered a tip, saying: 'Omniplex in Cressex, Wyncombe isn't expensive.' A third said: 'Oh, that's a real shame, I'd always take the kids there.' And another added: 'I know. I had the email too. There go affordable cinema trips for the family.' Others pointed to Vue in Reading as a possible alternative. Odeon confirmed the news in a statement, saying: 'Following talks with our landlord, we have come to a mutual agreement to close our Bracknell cinema at the end of May this year. "Supporting our local cinema team is our number one priority and we will be looking to secure jobs for as many of them as possible at our other cinema locations. Major cinema chain with 100 branches 'to close dozens of sites' in major blow to high street "We would like to thank our guests for all their support over the years.' The Bracknell closure follows a string of other shutdowns across the country, including Odeon's Surrey Quays and Covent Garden cinemas in London, which were both closed due to redevelopment plans. The Surrey Quays site shut its doors today, giving London movie lovers just hours to catch a final screening. The Covent Garden cinema closed earlier this month, and the site is now set to be transformed into a luxury hotel and theatre complex. One disappointed film fan posted on social media: 'Just popped into @ODEONCinemas Covent Garden and yes, it closes this Thursday. The site is being converted into a luxury hotel and theatre. Very sad.' It's not just Odeon feeling the pressure. Cineworld, another major UK chain, is also reportedly planning to close up to 25 cinemas as part of a major restructuring plan. Six venues — in Glasgow, Bedford, Hinckley, Loughborough, Yate, and Swindon — have already been marked for closure in the coming months. The shake-up comes as the cinema industry battles tough conditions. Rising costs, from energy bills to rent, combined with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, have left families with less money to spend on trips to the movies. Figures from the Centre for Retail Research show that nearly 10,500 shops closed in 2023 alone, highlighting the challenges facing entertainment venues and retailers alike. Some closures are tied to expiring leases or redevelopment projects, while others reflect a deeper struggle to keep up with changing consumer habits. As streaming services grow in popularity and households tighten their budgets, cinemas are under increasing pressure to survive. For Bracknell residents, the Odeon closure is more than just the loss of a cinema — it's the end of an affordable, family-friendly outing. Locals are now left searching for nearby cinemas that won't break the bank. Meanwhile, Odeon has promised to support its staff through the transition, aiming to place as many as possible in roles at its other cinemas across the UK. The wider picture for cinema chains remains uncertain. Cineworld is currently working with advisers to renegotiate rents at around 50 of its locations, and if deals can't be reached, even more closures could follow. For now, fans are flocking to their local Odeon screens to enjoy one last movie night, before the final curtain falls. What is happening across hospitality and the cinema sector? Odeon confirmed it would close five of its branches in May last year. Cineworld has revealed six UK sites it will close as it enters the first phase of a major restructuring. Empire Cinema also closed multiple sites in 2023 after falling into administration in July of the same year. The company made the decision following "a thorough assessment of all available options". The hospitality sector has been struggling too. In April, family favourite restaurant chain Whitbread revealed it was set to shut more than 200 locations and axe 1,500 jobs. It shared the plans in its full year results, saying it planned to convert 112 restaurants into hotel extensions while closing 126 "loss-making" venues. Pub giant Wetherspoons has been closing boozers across the UK too, and Byron Burger fell into administration last year. In March, pizza giant Papa Johns said it would close dozens of locations. 3
