‘China speed' accelerates drive towards next step in nuclear fusion

The Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak (Best), is now in its final assembly phase in Hefei and is expected to be completed in 2027, state news agency Xinhua reported.
However, SPARC, an experimental fusion facility under construction in Massachusetts, is working towards the same goal – that of producing more energy from fusion than it consumes – and is working to a similar timeline.
The assembly of Best involves tens of thousands of components with a total weight of around 6,000 tonnes.
'We have fully mastered the core technologies, both scientifically and technically,' said Song Yuntao, the project's chief engineer from the Institute of Plasma Physics in Hefei, at a ceremony marking the start of the final stage of construction on Thursday.

Work began two months ahead of schedule, according to Xinhua. 'In less than two years, we completed the civil construction, with components from various systems already reaching operational readiness – this is what we call 'China speed',' said Yan Jianwen, chairman of Neo Fusion, the state-backed company leading the project.
Best is a tokamak, a doughnut-shaped device widely seen as the most promising design for making nuclear fusion – a process that recreates the process by which the sun generates energy – a viable source of electricity.

In Shanghai, Jin Jiang Radisson Hotels launched a culinary initiative, offering exclusive dining deals and immersive food tours. Jin Jiang Hotels China Region's AI voice system handles 70 percent of guest calls, resolving 86 percent of requests within 15 minutes, often coordinating with in-house robots for tasks like deliveries, according to Qian. Photo: Reuters Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang on Thursday hailed China's supply chain as a "miracle", highlighting China's deep capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science. "The supply chain of China is a miracle. It is the largest and most complex in the world, not just about labor, but built on deep technology, AI and software," Huang said on the sidelines of the ongoing China International Supply Chain Expo in Beijing. Huang, a frequent visitor to China this year, stressed Chinese firms' critical role in the global tech ecosystem. "China is one of the few regions in the world with deep expertise in computer science," he said. "The architecture and algorithms used to serve such a large population are incredibly sophisticated." Huang's remarks come at a time of growing Sino-US tech tensions. Despite regulatory pressure and geopolitical tensions, Huang stressed the importance of continued collaboration and connection. "We rely on the global supply chain to build very complicated products," he said, noting that Nvidia contributes software and hardware that power systems worldwide. "Supply chain is connection. It takes many suppliers and providers around the world connected together in a supply chain." Last week, the chipmaker became the first company ever to touch US$4 trillion in market value. Asked about the future of AI, Huang viewed it as the next major technological revolution, though still in its early stages. "The last 10 to 12 years were about preparing for today. Now, AI can reason, think and understand information. It's incredible," he said. Huang also addressed mounting concerns around AI safety. "We have to continue to advance the technology safely," he said, citing cybersecurity and environment monitoring as key areas to ensure responsible development. In response to a question about China's role in AI development, Huang pointed to the country's large pool of researchers and deep interest in science and mathematics.
