Seattle Humane Brings Community Together for Tuxes & Tails 2025
Bellevue, Washington, May 20, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Seattle Humane highlighted their lifesaving work once again during their annual Tuxes & Tails fundraising gala on Saturday, May 17, and the community responded generously by pushing the nonprofit pet resource and adoption center past their $1.5 million goal.
The outpouring of support comes at a critical time as Seattle Humane gears up for a long kitten season and an increase in requests for assistance from pet owners that occur every summer. Following a year of transition and new leadership in 2024, Seattle Humane has come out more capable of strengthening the human-animal bond than ever before.
Seattle Humane has evolved over the past decade into more than just an animal shelter, but also a resource center that serves nearly 100,000 pets and the people who love them every year. They provide lifesaving rescue transfers of pets from overcrowded and disaster-struck shelters and rescues, thousands of low-cost public spay/neuter surgeries through their Schuler Family Medical Center, temporary foster through the SPOT program for pet owners experiencing life emergencies, a Pet Food Bank that provides roughly one million meals each year and dedicated funds established to support pet owners facing financial hardship.

The organization is continuing to diversify and grow their programs and services to increase revenue after several years of operating costs outpacing donations.

2 more dogs move into Allegheny County Jail after first TAILS training program participant was adopted
Two more dogs have moved into the Allegheny County Jail after the first participant of the TAILS training program found her forever home. Through the Teaching Animals and Incarcerated Lifelong Skills program, women at the Allegheny County Jail trained Ethel, a 2-year-old, 38-pound mixed-breed dog, to learn basic skills that would increase her adoptability and prepare her for a permanent loving home. Ethel, now named Ellie, was adopted by a local family last month after about a month in the program. Next up: Niko the husky and Max, a small curly-haired mixed breed. "Animal Friends is thrilled that we currently have two shelter dogs residing at ACJ," Katie Vecchi, Animal Friends' chief shelter officer, said in a press release. "With the success of Ethel/Ellie, we knew that any dog who was transferred into the program would be shown endless compassion and dedication." Niko, a stray who arrived at Animal Friends underweight, got to the jail on July 15. He brought plenty of energy, greeting correctional officers in the visitor's lobby with leaps and licks. So far, he's already gained three pounds. Max showed up shortly after Niko. The county said all the women on the pod fell in love with Max, who couldn't wait to get into the gym and check everything out. "The two dogs there now are little more high energy (than Ellie) and need help with their basic manners," said Vecchi. "We are confident that the handlers at ACJ will help to prepare them for their new homes."

Reconfiguration of the Bonaventure Expressway into a boulevard: construction to begin in September 2025
LONGUEUIL, Quebec, July 31, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) is pleased to announce that work to reconfigure the Bonaventure Expressway into a boulevard will begin in September 2025, with site mobilization scheduled for late August. The project is expected to be completed in 2029. To keep traffic flowing throughout construction, at least two lanes in each direction will remain open on Bonaventure at virtually all times. Out of a total project budget of $282 million, construction work on the new boulevard will cost $156.2 million. Duroking Construction was selected to carry out the work through a rigorous and transparent procurement process. The project involves a complete reconfiguration of the sector. Traffic lanes will be moved away from the St. Lawrence River to create space for an 80,000 m2 green corridor along the shoreline. This massive corridor will feature two active mobility paths and landscaped public spaces, while reducing the road footprint and heat islands by 40%. 'We are delighted to reach this milestone in a journey that began several years ago,' said Sandra Martel, CEO of JCCBI. 'A participatory approach was launched in 2019, followed by the design phase and the awarding of the construction contract. For nearly five years, we have worked closely with the City of Montreal, various partners and nearly thirty public interest groups to refine the project, which will significantly enhance quality of life in the surrounding community,' she added. Key benefits of the project Addition of a 2.5 km multipurpose path and pedestrian promenade, open year-round The new boulevard will see active mobility paths added to an area where none currently exist. These paths will connect pedestrian and cycling networks on the West Island and South Shore to the Old Port and downtown Montreal. The new active mobility paths will remain open year-round. Significant local greening efforts The project will involve major greening efforts along the Bonaventure corridor, with landscaping designed to protect biodiversity. A total of nearly 32,000 trees, shrubs and perennials will be planted. Grassy areas will be adapted to the site's varied terrain, allowing users to sit, walk or ride along River. Protecting the St. Lawrence River JCCBI remains committed to addressing the environmental issues in the area. The project will include measures to protect biodiversity, and the Corporation plans to maintain or even expand its Solution Bonaventure project. Underway since 2016, this initiative involves containing and treating contaminated groundwater to protect the St. Lawrence River. Prioritizing mobility With more than 20 million trips annually, the Bonaventure Expressway is a vital link between downtown Montreal, the Port of Montreal, Highway 15, and the Samuel De Champlain Bridge. Road capacity will be maintained at three lanes in each direction, to ensure traffic flow along this critical corridor. To improve pedestrian safety and align with neighbouring areas, the speed limit will be reduced to 50 km/h. Three new intersections with traffic lights will also be added, making it easier and safer to cross the boulevard and access the green corridor.
