Abdul Karim appointed as PBB's new publicity chief

KUCHING (May 18): Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has been appointed as the new publicity chief of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB).
Speaking to reporters after the Pre-State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Meeting and PBB Sarawak Supreme Council Meeting 2025 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) last night, the Asajaya assemblyman said the role was not entirely unfamiliar to him.
'In terms of responsibilities, I believe they are quite similar to what I undertook previously when I served as a vice-president.
'The role of publicity chief is almost parallel to that of a vice-president, as both positions hold the authority to issue statements.
'Now, serving as publicity chief, I believe this role will see me working more closely with the secretary-general and the party president to ensure that any statements issued are aligned with the party's direction and not perceived as too personal,' he said.
Abdul Karim previously did not retain his position as vice-president during PBB's triennial delegates convention held in February.
Nevertheless, he expressed his gratitude to the party President and Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his appointment to the post.
His appointment fills the vacancy previously held by Datuk Idris Buang.
'This reflects the trust that may still remain for me to continue contributing to the party's Supreme Council,' he added.

Sarawak's tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed this in the state legislative assembly recently. He said 560 applications were approved last year and another 265 as of mid-May this year, Bernama reported. According to Karim, the economic benefit from these applicants saw funds amounting to RM176.9 million entering the state, in terms of fixed deposits. After having captured the interest of Chinese nationals and Europeans over the period, Karim said the state is now keen on targeting applicants from Japan. He said this was because there has been an increase in the number of tourists coming to Sarawak from Japan. 'It's up to them (the Japanese) to see what Sarawak has to offer, but from what I can observe, especially from applicants from Europe or China, they see Sarawak as a safe place with good medical facilities,' he was quoted as saying at an event in Kuching today. He also cited the education sector as a factor that attracts foreigners to join the SMM2H programme, as their children can study at several international schools in Sarawak.

KUCHING (June 8): A federal agency has been called on to first seek guidance from Islamic authorities in order to properly distribute Aidiladha 'korban' meat, according to Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts said this in response to the federal Sarawak State Development Office (SDO), which held a 'korban' ritual in Kampung Asajaya Laut two days before Hari Raya Aidiladha. 'Animals that are slaughtered during Aidiladha, there are certain 'pahala' (rewards from God) — even the blood that flows from the sacrificed animals. 'However, if the animals are slaughtered two days before Aidiladha, then the meats are not 'korban meats; they are just ordinary meats distributed to the villagers. 'Before holding the 'ibadah korban' (sacrificial rites), the SDO director must first consult those who are knowledgeable in Islam,' he told reporters after distributing 'korban' meat at Masjid Darul Ehsan at Kampung Asajaya Laut in Asajaya today. While he commended such an act by the SDO, Abdul Karim warned organisers against associating such events with the 'korban' ritual. 'They may have good intentions, but if the supposed sacrificial meats were distributed before Aidiladha, then it is just a normal meat. Chieng: Phase 1 of Bukit Assek drainage, road project to be completed by August

He mentioned that the project was originally scheduled for completion in May, but it encountered a minor delay due to the rainy weather earlier this year. Chieng revealed that he raised the funding for Phase 2 during the recent State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting. 'As we are set to complete hase 1 of the project in August, we require phase 2 to bring the project to fruition. The design, proposal, and working paper originate from the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Sibu and have received approval from DID Sarawak. 'During the (recent) DUN sitting session, I brought up this topic, and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian responded, stating that for the second phase of this project, the DID is putting up the submission under the Sarawak government (for) RMK13 (13th Malaysia Plan), Rolling Plan 1 in 2026, with the project costing RM56.6 million,' he said. Chieng made the remarks to reporters during a sacrificial meat distribution programme at Masjid Al-Muhajirin Sentosa, attended by SUPP Bukit Assek chairman Datuk Chieng Buong Toon and mosque chairman Ramli Hussin.
