Hall of Fame trainer and horse racing legend D. Wayne Lukas dies at 89

Japan Times30-06-2025
Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who saddled four Kentucky Derby winners among his 15 winners in U.S. Triple Crown races, has died at the age of 89, his family said Sunday.
In a statement released through Churchill Downs, the family said Lukas died at home on Saturday night, a week after an infection sent him to hospital, and he decided not to pursue aggressive treatment.
"We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers and support from all corners of the racing community — from racetracks across the country to lifelong friends and respected rivals, and from fans who never missed a post parade when 'Lukas' was listed in the program," the family said.
Lukas was one of the most accomplished trainers in U.S. racing history. His 15 Triple Crown victories are second only to Bob Baffert's 17, and he is tied with Ireland's Aidan O'Brien for most Breeders' Cup wins for a trainer with 20.
He saddled his most recent Triple Crown race winner last year with Seize the Grey in the Preakness Stakes — his seventh Preakness triumph.
"Today we lost one of the great champions of Churchill Downs and one of the most significant figures in Thoroughbred racing over the last 50 years," Bill Carstanjen, chief executive of Churchill Downs Incorporated, said in a statement.
"We will miss his humor, his wisdom and his unmatched capacity to thrill the fans with the performances of his horses on our sport's biggest days."
The Breeders' Cup issued a statement hailing Lukas' innovative training approach and a legacy that "continues through the many horsemen who came up under his astute guidance before finding tremendous success on their own.
"The dedication, discipline, passion, and insight with which he ran his operation will serve as an inspiration for many generations," the Breeders' Cup said in its statement.
National Thoroughbred Racing Association President Tom Rooney said it was "hard to imagine" racing without Lukas.
"His horsemanship reshaped the sport," Rooney said. "If there's a Mount Rushmore of trainers, D. Wayne Lukas is on it."
Churchill Downs confirmed last week that the horses in Lukas' care had been transferred to veteran assistant Sebastian "Bas" Nicholl.
In a career spanning six decades, Lukas amassed 4,967 documented thoroughbred wins. He trained 26 Eclipse Award winners, including three that were named Horse of the Year.

WNBA sex toy incidents linked to cryptocurrency group

A pair of reports published Thursday linked the recent rise of sex toys being thrown onto WNBA courts to a cryptocurrency group pushing a memecoin. A spokesman for the group behind Green Dildo Coin took credit for the trend in an interview with USA Today, while The Athletic reviewed a livestream of cryptocurrency enthusiasts in which speakers celebrated a sex toy being thrown onto the Los Angeles Sparks' court Tuesday. The group has claimed that their memecoin's goal was to combat a "toxic" environment in the cryptocurrency world and insisted that its members did not "dislike women's sports," though it's unclear why Green Dildo Coin advocates have fixated on the WNBA. Regardless, WNBA players and coaches have widely criticized the trend, citing safety concerns alongside the unneeded ridicule it's brought to the league. There have been six known incidents of neon green sex toys being thrown at WNBA games since July 29, per USA Today. The latest incident came during the Los Angeles Sparks' home win over the Indiana Fever on Tuesday night. Late in the first half, after Kelsey Plum of Los Angeles shot a free throw, a sex toy was tossed onto the court landing near the feet of Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Earlier that day, Cunningham addressed the growing trend on her podcast, "Show Me Something," saying, "Everyone's trying to make sure the W is not a joke and it's taken seriously, and then that happens. I'm like, how are we ever going to get taken seriously?" The crypto group's spokesman defended the stunts to USA Today. "We didn't do this because like we dislike women's sports or, like, some of the narratives that are trending right now are ridiculous," he said. "Creating disruption at games is like, it happens in every single sport, right? We've seen it in the NFL, we've seen it in hockey, you know ... fans doing random things to more or less create attention. "We knew that in order to get a voice in the space ... we had to go out and do some viral stunts to save us from having to pay that influencer cabal, sacrifice our souls and the fate of the project." The group placed one of its sex toys on the Wall Street Bull statue in New York. And the memecoin's value has grown more than 300% in the past seven days, USA Today reported. The first major incident has led to an arrest and multiple charges for its perpetrator, Delbert Carver, who tossed a sex toy onto the Atlanta Dream's court on July 29. He was released on bond and is charged with disorderly conduct, public indecency/indecent exposure and criminal trespass. Despite that, it is not apparent that Green Dildo Coin plans to stop its stunts. "This is empowering to every (expletive) crypto community to start thinking outside the box," one person said on the livestream reviewed by The Athletic. "Get creative and (expletive) do something that makes people actually laugh. Memecoins should make you laugh."

Venus Williams falls in first round in Cincinnati

Venus Williams rallied from 4-1 down in the first set but could not maintain momentum, with the seven-time Grand Slam champion falling 6-4, 6-4 to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in the first round of the ATP-WTA Cincinnati Open on Thursday. Williams, 45, was competing for the second time in three weeks after returning to the WTA tour in Washington in her first tournament in 16 months. Williams won her first-round match in Washington before bowing out to Magdalena Frech in straight sets. "I had so much fun out there, and there were definitely moments where I had a lot of chances," Williams said. "I thought she played super well. I have to definitely give her a lot of credit. "It's hard for me to be upset," Williams added. "I know that I lost this match because I just, I need more matches. "I could have played better. But the thing I feel good about is that I did go for it. It's not that I didn't know what to do. It's just that I need to keep working on it." Bouzas Maneiro, ranked 51st, was thrilled by the sense of occasion on the opening day of the tournament, the last major tuneup prior to the Aug. 25 start of the U.S. Open. "It was not easy at all," the Spaniard said of taking on Williams. "She's a legend, it was a privilege to play against her." Bouzas Maneiro said her 87-minute win was "like a dream." "I never thought that I would ever play Venus," the 22-year-old said. "I was just lucky with that. "I tried to have a lot of intensity, but I had no rhythm. She hits so hard. I tried to focus. I had to be positive to win the points." Williams was playing in the tournament for the 11th time. She reached the semifinals in 2012 and in her most recent appearance, she lost in the second round to China's Zheng Qinwen in 2023. She said this week that after a serious health scare last year that involved surgery to remove uterine fibroids she is relishing her return to the courts. "I'm in a completely different space, and I have a clean bill of health, thank God," she said. In results from the ATP Masters 1000 event draw, Brazil's Joao Fonseca began with a win over China's Bu Yunchaokete 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Fonseca overcame 18 unforced errors and snapped a three-match losing streak in Masters 1000 events. "I was struggling a lot, missing a lot of shots, not feeling my best today," Fonseca admitted. "I was staying in the game, believing that I would find the opportunity, and I got it. I'm very happy with how I believed." Belgian Zizou Bergs defeated Britain's Jakob Fearnley 6-1, 6-4 while there were wins for Frenchmen Benjamin Bonzi and Arthur Rinderknech.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford on track to return to practice on Monday

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford will work out on Saturday prior to the team's preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach Sean McVay said Thursday. McVay added that if all goes well for Stafford, the veteran will be in line to participate in practice with the Rams on Monday. McVay also confirmed an NFL Network report that Stafford is dealing with an aggravated disc in his back. "If this was in-season, he would be playing right now," McVay said. "We have taken a very cautious approach, but if we were playing a (regular-season) game this week, he would be playing in the game — and I think that's important for you guys (the media) to know right now. "When we do go against the Chargers, we will hold him out of that (joint) practice. And then you'll continue to see his workload increase as long as he is feeling good." Stafford, 37, remains in line to take the field for the Rams' season opener against the Houston Texans on Sept. 7 in Inglewood, California He completed 340 of 517 passes (65.8%) for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions while starting all 16 games that he played in 2024. He also was 45 of 71 (63.4%) for 533 yards, four TDs and no interceptions in two playoff games last season. A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Stafford has completed 63.4% of his passes for 59,809 yards, 377 TDs and 188 interceptions in 222 regular-season games with the Detroit Lions and the Rams. The Lions selected him with the first overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Georgia. Stafford led the Rams to a 23-20 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.
