This year, Kolkata's Durga Puja is set to be more than a celebration of artistry and devotion — it will be a cultural statement.From sprawling installations to thought-provoking pandals, several committees are dedicating their themes to the perceived injustices faced by Bengali-speaking people across India, reported TOI. Organisers told the news outlet that the idea is to challenge stereotypes, noting the language's deep cultural roots, and confront attempts to label Bengali speakers as 'outsiders' or 'Bangladeshis.'The creative interpretations span Bengal's ancient history, Partition-era refugee struggles, and the lives of migrant workers who face harassment simply for speaking their mother tongue.From veteran clubs to newer entrants, organisers are pushing boundaries — turning pandals into living history lessons on Bengal's legacy and its contemporary challenges.In Behala, Adarshapally Club will evoke the trauma of refugees during Partition, drawing on filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak's works, particularly Meghe Dhaka Tara, to mirror the threats to Bengal's cultural fabric today.'It's about Bengal in peril — then and now,' organiser Shankar Ghosh told TOI.Baguiati's Ashwininagar Bandhumahal will trace the history of the Bengal delta back 42,000 years, while marking its 45th year with Bangla o Bangali. Banglar Itihaas, featuring installations of Rabindranath Tagore, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and Raja Ram Mohan Roy.Meanwhile, Dum Dum Road Hanuman Mandir Jayashree Club is taking a hard political stance, theming its pandal around alleged illegal deportations of Bengali speakers and the erosion of their basic rights.Chaltabagan Sarbojonin, now in its 81st year, will present Ami Banglay Bolchhi (I am speaking in Bangla) near the historic home of poet and playwright Dwijendralal Roy.On the other hand, 39 Pally Durgotsav Samiti's effort, spearheaded by young organisers with Down syndrome, will address what they call 'language terrorism' — a metaphor for the stigma and exclusion they face, TOI further reported.The surge in politically charged Puja themes comes amid heightened tensions in West Bengal over alleged harassment of Bengali-speaking citizens in BJP-ruled states.Last week, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a large protest march through central Kolkata, joined by TMC leaders including Abhishek Banerjee, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled state visit.The TMC has accused the Centre and BJP-governed states of targeting Bengalis through eviction drives, detention of migrant workers, and even foreigners' tribunal notices against Indian citizens. The party's renewed push for 'Bengali pride' is seen as a key plank in its campaign for next year's Assembly polls.BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, however, has countered that the 'Bengali asmita' pitch is political theatre designed to shield illegal immigration, while questioning the state government's own record in supporting Bengali professionals.For now, as the political rhetoric sharpens, Durga Puja organisers in Kolkata seem determined to make the city's biggest cultural festival a platform for defending identity — blending devotion, art, and activism in the same breath.

Decades later, their granddaughters, Karuna and Gouri, shared with NDTV what they've learned about this remarkable love story. "We've heard it was a whirlwind romance," says Karuna. "They deeply respected each other's talent and shared a friendship you can feel in his letters to her. But we didn't grow up hearing many stories because we were too little." Gouri adds, "Some of the letters are so personal you wonder if you should even be reading them." "Feels like an intrusion into their privacy," Karuna reflects. "But yes, there was definitely a lot of love there," Gouri affirms. Even after all these years, the letters remain a window into a relationship that began when one was a superstar and the other a struggler and became one of Hindi cinema's most poignant love stories.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's highly anticipated period drama Love & War is gearing up for its next phase of filming in Madhya Pradesh. After extensive shoots in Mumbai and planned sequences in Europe, the production is set to utilise a British-era army base in the town of Mhow to capture the film's authentic period setting. According to sources familiar with the project, the filmmakers have chosen Mhow, a town known for its colonial military heritage, as a primary location to depict artillery and military life from the pre-independence era. The location's preserved British army base offers an ideal backdrop that aligns with the film's historical narrative. 'The team will be shooting for close to 15 days here, with major portions requiring Vicky Kaushal and Ranbir Kapoor. As of now, they are on standby waiting for the permissions. Once that is cleared, they will fly to MP to kick-start the shoot," said an insider to India Today. Mhow, also called Dr Ambedkar Nagar after its most famous son, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, lies about 23 kilometers from Indore. Established in 1818 by John Malcolm, the town served as the headquarters of the 5th (Mhow) Division of the Southern Command during British rule. Today, it remains a significant center for the Indian Army, housing three premier military training institutions. The acronym Mhow is popularly understood to mean 'Military Headquarters Of Warfare,' reflecting its longstanding martial importance. Following the shoot in Madhya Pradesh, the Love & War team plans to travel to Italy in October for further filming. The production aims to complete shooting before the end of 2025, despite reports of earlier delays. Set against the backdrop of a fictional war, Love & War is reportedly a passionate love story exploring the intricacies of friendship, relationships, and sacrifice. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, a real-life couple, alongside Vicky Kaushal. This upcoming release is slated for 2026. One of the country's youngest freedom fighters, Khudiram Bose, was hanged on August 11, 1908, at the age of 18 for his role in the Muzaffarpur bomb case. Banerjee, in her social media post, further claimed that the son of Bengal was shown as a son of Punjab. "Our indomitable teenager from Midnapore has been shown as a son of Punjab. Unbearable! But we have always paid tribute to this man, a symbol of patriotism and supreme sacrifice," she said. Banerjee also highlighted her government's initiatives to preserve Bose's legacy, which include developing Bose's birthplace, Mahabani, and its surrounding areas. "For the further development of Mahabani and the adjacent areas, which are associated with the birth anniversary of Khudiram Bose, the Mahabani Development Authority has been established. Apart from this, everything has been done, from installing a statue of Shaheed Khudiram in Mahabani to renovating the library, a new spacious auditorium, conference room. An open stage has also been set up. In addition, modern cottages have been built for visitors, and the traditional Khudiram Park has been revived. The entire area has also been decorated with lights," she said. She further highlighted that her government also named a metro station in Kolkata after him.
