Ambassador visits Newport and Magor in trade roadshow

Anne Sherriff, the UK's ambassador to Belgium, visited south Wales on June 30 as part of a new roadshow led by foreign secretary David Lammy.
The roadshow aims to strengthen economic ties and drive growth across the UK by connecting regions with overseas markets.
Mr Lammy said: "Wales has a strong connection to Belgium but there's so much more we can do to boost trade and investment.
"I am sending my Ambassador to work directly with local businesses to build connections so they can harness their expertise and effectively champion the interests of Wales most effectively.
"This nationwide roadshow is one of the ways I am ensuring the economic interests of British businesses sit at the heart of our foreign policy as we deliver on our Plan for Change."
Ambassador Sherriff met with Andrew Gwatkin, the Welsh Government's director for international relations and trade, in Cardiff before touring CSA Catapult's headquarters in Newport.
The visit also included a stop at AB InBev's brewery in Magor.
Ms Sherriff said: "It's exciting to be in south Wales as part of this first-of-its-kind roadshow – going the extra mile to develop relationships that will help us supercharge growth to every corner of the UK.
"We're hitting the road to speak directly to community leaders and businesses, so that not a single opportunity is missed to generate trade and investment wins overseas.
"I am looking forward to building on today's roadshow discussions to showcase Wales on the international stage."
The Magor brewery is AB InBev's largest in the UK and produces leading brands such as Budweiser and Stella Artois.
The ambassador's visit aims to strengthen an already significant trade relationship.
Total trade between the UK and Belgium reached £60.7 billion in 2024, with Belgian investment stock in the UK close to £50 billion.
Several Welsh businesses benefit from this relationship.
Belgian companies such as Syensqo in Wrexham, What's Cooking in Deeside, and United Petfoods in Llangadog all operate in Wales, supporting jobs and growth in the region.

Why 'Albo the activist' has more in common with Liberal hero John Howard than he'd care to admit - and what it says about the future of Australia: PVO

Anthony Albanese is edging towards a paradox: a Labor PM who could end up echoing John Howard. Not in ideology, but in method. The shape of what's unfolding is familiar: govern from the centre, bank incremental gains and let time in office do the heavy lifting. But nobody could accuse either PM of failing to pursue passion projects, and not always successfully.

Tomorrow, 15 branches are expected to permanently cease trading, in what is a massive blow for its customers and for UK high streets. The closures come as Polish owner Pepco Group sold Poundland to a US investment firm Gordon Brothers for £1 after a downturn in trading. Major restructuring plans have followed which include the closure of a whopping 68 stores by mid-October. Advertisement Among the stores closing tomorrow are branches in Sunderland, Poole, and Falmouth. Other sites across Newcastle, Coventry and Canterbury will also cease trading later this month. These closures follow the shuttering of ten stores earlier this month. Darren MacDonald, retail director at Poundland, said: "While our anticipated network of around 650-700 stores remains sizeable, it is of course, sincerely regrettable that we're closing a number of stores to allow us to get us back on track. Advertisement "We entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when a store nearby closes, but we look forward to continuing to welcome them to one of our other locations. "Work is underway to with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles." Poundland to be sold for JUST £1 as frontrunner for shock takeover is revealed after wave of store closures The following Poundland stores will close permanently on August 17: Bedford Bidston Moss Broxburn Craigavon Dartmouth East Dulwich Falmouth Hull St Andrews Newtonabbey Perth Poole Sunderland Stafford Thornaby Worcester An additional 12 locations will shut on August 24: Brigg Canterbury Coventry Newcastle Kings Heath Peterborough Peterlee Rainham Salford Sheldon Wells Whitechapel Finally, on August 31, the following branches will also close: Advertisement Blackburn Cookstown Erdington Kimberley Kimberley Shopping Centre, Nottingham Horsham Hull Holderness Kettering Omagh Shepherds Bush Southport Taunton Currently, Poundland operates 800 stores nationwide, but the company hopes to significantly reduce this number to between 650 and 700. This includes the 68 stores closing as part of the restructuring, as well as additional stores shutting when leases expire and are not renewed. These restructuring plans were outlined in June by the investment firm Gordon Brothers. This came after the company was sold to the firm that month as part of a deal that included major restructuring and an £80million cash injection. Plans include the shuttering of a total of 68 sites, as well as the closure of its frozen and digital distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, later this year. Advertisement The firm also plans to shut its national distribution centre in Bilston, West Midlands, by early 2026. Poundland will also stop selling products online and focus on expanding its womenswear and seasonal ranges. These changes, except for the 49 store closures, are still subject to High Court approval later this month. Poundland was put up for auction in March by its previous owner, Pepco, after the brand experienced weak sales. The Polish company reported a 6.5% decline in Poundland's revenue, dropping to £830million for the six months to March compared to the previous year. Advertisement Pepco cited "highly challenging trading conditions" for the drop, with Poundland facing struggles across all product categories and experiencing 18 net store closures during that period.

His announcement, posted on social media, admitted bluntly: 'it hasn't been working for some time.' His eatery in Carmarthen, Wales, has long enjoyed acclaim—and not just from the critics. Firmly lodged in the UK's Top 100, it became a favourite dining spot in the heart of the Welsh town. But as the post revealed, the relentless climb of costs has been an uphill battle. In a post on Instagram, Deri wrote: "We're Closing - it's taken me a long time to write this announcement, as it's something I've been putting off for too long. "For those of you who know me well, you'll know how much weight I've carried in running The Warren. "Behind the front, there's a man doing his best to keep afloat a business built on strong human and environmental ethics, while also trying to look after himself, his relationships, his home and his community. "The truth is, it hasn't been working for me for some time." He told customers that The Warren would be "going into hibernation for a little while" after service on September 21. "I don't see this as an ending. I imagine a future where this space is alive with new collaborations, where community food projects have a home here, and where The Warren continues to make noise from the streets of Carmarthen," he added. "With the support of some brilliant people and organisations, I'll be exploring what that could look like. "In the meantime, our team is ready to give you the best of what we've got over the next five weeks. "So please do come in, enjoy a meal with us, use any vouchers you've been holding onto, and help us celebrate the wonderful achievements we've made together so far." Many took to social media to express their heartbreak, with one writing: "Ah I'm so sad to read this! But you always have to do what's best for you." "It's really tough having ethics in the hospitality business, or indeed just having an independent hospitality business- well done for sticking to your principles and I sincerely hope there's a phoenix rising soon!" Another echoed: "So sad to read this and excited to see what is next for you... sending all the love and encouragement to you." Deri won Chef of the Year at the Food Made Good awards in 2019, and is also a key member of the Cegin Hedyn - a community kitchen and canteen in Camarthen. It first opened in 2022 and serves plant-based, canteen-style lunches to diners who pay what they can. He was also a BBC Morning Live Community Food Champion in 2024 and has made countless TV appearances. 2 The chef said the business hadn't been working for a 'long time' Credit: Instagram/@ethicalchef
