
2026 Lexus GX Review, Pricing, and Specs
Overview
The Lexus GX is now a thoroughly modern luxury off-roader, sharing much with the recently downsized Toyota Land Cruiser. But while the LC uses a hybrid four-cylinder for motivation, the GX gets a 349-hp twin-turbo V-6 engine backed by a four-wheel-drive system with a low range. Creature comforts abound in all versions of the Lexus, while the Overtrail is set up for the most serious off-roading. One compromise of the off-road-ready Overtrail trims is the loss of the available third-row seat, limiting the passenger count to five. That said, the GX's rearmost row is pretty tight, so you may not miss it all that much.

The GX550 has two personalities: luxury on-roader and trail-conquering off-roader. For buyers who plan on spending the majority of their time on asphalt, we'd suggest the Luxury trim, as it classes up the GX550's interior with plenty of nice-to-have features, including semi-aniline leather upholstery; 10-way-adjustable front seats with massage, heat, and ventilation; illuminated door sill plates; and second-row window shades. It also comes with the bigger 22-inch wheels that better fill the GX's large wheel wells for a more upscale look. For a bit more, the Overtrail+ trim provides a more rugged appearance and significantly more capability for off-roading, but the compromise is that it eliminates the GX's third row of seats and some of the luxury items listed above. But if you're planning outdoor adventures that include traversing challenging terrain, the Overtrail is well worth consideration.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
A twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that makes 349 horsepower is standard in the GX550. A 10-speed automatic is also standard, and all models come with four-wheel drive. Overtrail and Overtrail+ trims are decked out with more off-road goodies than the other models, including 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, an aluminum skid plate, an adaptive suspension system with more wheel articulation, a crawl-control feature, and selectable drive modes for differing terrains. The GX550 feels punchy off the line, but on the highway we noticed a disconcerting amount of hood flutter. The ride is fairly stiff, especially on the available upsized wheels. Steering is crisp, but the GX's handling is about what you'd expect for the tall, boxy SUV, meaning there's plenty of body roll. The Overtrail shines off-road; outward visibility is excellent, which is especially handy when navigating tight trails. We confirmed as much in an off-road-oriented comparison test. The transfer case allows the driver to select the low-range gearset without locking the center differential, which allows for a tighter turning radius, and the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) can disconnect the front or rear anti-roll bars independently of one another to help improve stability, reduce head toss, and increase traction over rough terrain.

At our test track, a GX550 Premium hit 60 mph in a respectable 6.2 seconds. That's a full second quicker than the previous-generation GX managed at our track. It's also quicker than the Land Cruiser's 7.7-second effort.

Towing and Payload Capacity
The GX550 can tow up to 9096 pounds, which far exceeds the previous-gen GX460's 6500 pounds as well as the Land Cruiser's 6000-pound rating. The GX also tows more than luxury-brand rivals such as the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 GX yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings of 15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. On our 75-mph highway route, the GX550 Premium we tested delivered on its 21-mpg estimate. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Despite the GX's rugged exterior styling, luxurious environs await you once you climb aboard. Faux- or genuine-leather upholstery is available in a variety of colors, and Overtrail variants offer faux-suede accents in a dark green shade. Premium and Luxury trims have three rows of seats with space for up to seven with the standard second-row bench; a pair of captain's chairs is optional and brings the seating capacity down to six. Third-row space is severely limited, however; the Lexus TX crossover has a big advantage here. Overtrail models skip the third row altogether and seat five, but the middle passenger's foot room is compromised by the plastic base of the center console. A cooled storage bin, a head-up display, and a digital key fob are all available as options. In our testing, the GX550 Overtrail swallowed 18 carry-on-sized boxes behind the second-row seat and 33 with the rear seats folded, but the cargo floor is high off the ground making it awkward to load heavy items.

Infotainment and Connectivity
All GX models come with a 14.0-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a separate 12.3-inch digital gauge display that can be reconfigured to show a variety of information to the driver. Nearly all climate controls are in the touchscreen. Most models have six USB-C ports spread throughout the interior, but Overtrail and Overtrail+ models get just four; a wireless smartphone charging pad is optional and positions the phone up and at an angle. A 10-speaker stereo is standard, but audiophiles can upgrade to a 21-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system.

The GX comes equipped with a suite of driver-assistance features that includes automated emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. Why One Analyst Thinks Tesla Could Dominate the 'Low-Altitude Economy'
"Look up, your ride has arrived," is a message some see as eventually landing in your inbox. 'In our view, the low altitude economy (LAE) may eventually vastly exceed the size of today's automotive market,' wrote Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas in a research note earlier this week. That term refers to aerial commercial activities conducted within one mile of the earth's surface, airspace now sparsely occupied by helicopters and small drones. Analysts expect advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics to support the launch of new aircraft—notably, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles—with applications in areas like logistics/distribution, public security and emergency services, tourism, urban commuting, and intercity transportation. Morgan Stanley forecasts the total addressable 'Urban Air Mobility' (UAM) market will be valued at $1 trillion by 2040 and $9 trillion by 2050. Not everybody's expectations are quite that high: Bank of America recently estimated a market worth $23 billion by 2035. BofA expects adoption to remain relatively slow until at least that year, when it anticipates economies of scale and battery technologies to improve eVTOL cost and accessibility. Whatever the size of the pie, the companies vying for a slice of it include upstarts like Archer Aviation (ACHR), which is currently testing an eVTOL model and partnering with defense contractor Anduril to develop military applications, and Joby Aviation (JOBY), which is in the process of getting its air taxi certified for passenger rides. Morgan Stanley's Jonas thinks those companies could face formidable competition from Tesla (TSLA). The EV maker hasn't announced any intention to develop eVTOLs, but CEO Elon Musk has discussed the need for a homegrown low-altitude economy in the U.S. When Jonas, on Tesla's most recent earnings call, asked Musk for his thoughts on the U.S. and China's AI and robotics rivalry, Musk expressed concern about America's limited drone manufacturing capabilities. 'Any country that cannot manufacture its own drones is doomed to be the vassal state of any country that can,' he said, quoting X user "@naval." 'And we can't. America cannot currently manufacture its own drones.' Tesla, Jonas says, 'has a host of relevant skills to be a factor' in the commercial and military LAE, including its work in manufacturing, autonomy, electric motors and batteries, and robotics. Jonas estimates Tesla's share of a future $9 trillion UAM market could add between $100 and $1,000 to its share price. Tesla's work on autonomous vehicles could give it a leg up on LAE competitors. "Any advancement in the science of autonomous cars accelerates the advancement of autonomous aerial drones," Jonas wrote. Musk said in last month's earnings call and a May 20 interview with CNBC that the company was still on track to launch the program by the end of the month. The start of the program, Musk told CNBC, will likely be about 10 Model Y vehicles operating autonomously, with the company later expanding to more vehicles and cities. Tesla owners will eventually be able to add their vehicle to the available fleet of Teslas to rent for a ride, Musk has said, which could help Tesla scale the project before the Cybercab goes into production next year. Oppenheimer analysts recently wrote that the company's ability to get its software to drive fully autonomously with its current suite of cameras could be "key to its technology leadership and stock performance," but added they believe it might take at least one or two more hardware and software updates before Tesla can deliver reliable autonomous performance. More bullish analysts, like Wedbush's Dan Ives, have said they think successful autonomous driving software will be the start of technology that will eventually add $1 trillion in value to the company. Overall, analysts are somewhat divided on Tesla's stock, with 10 of the brokers tracked by Visible Alpha giving the stock a "buy" rating, with four "hold" and four "sell" ratings. Elon Musk's bitter falling-out with President Trump could be costly for Tesla. As long as he is persona non grata in the Trump administration, Mr. Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, will struggle to persuade Republicans not to gut climate policies worth billions of dollars to the electric car and battery company. Mr. Musk may also lose sway over federal regulators who could make or break his plans to deploy driverless taxis, which he has described as the future of the company. Tesla is already suffering steep declines in sales and profit. The company's share price plummeted 14 percent on Thursday, its biggest one-day decline, after Mr. Musk and Mr. Trump began insulting each other on social media. The stock recovered somewhat Friday, rising nearly 4 percent, perhaps on hopes that the men would reach a truce or because investors thought the stock was now a bargain after the previous day's drop. There was always a disconnect between Mr. Musk and his Republican allies on electric cars. The domestic policy bill passed by House Republicans and being considered by the Senate will hurt the electric car market in the United States, where Tesla is the largest manufacturer by far. The bill would eliminate tax credits of up to $7,500 for people who buy electric cars. It would quickly phase out subsidies for battery factories and lithium refineries, and end financial support for electric vehicle charging stations. The bill imposes an annual fee of $250 on electric vehicle owners that environmental groups say is punitive. Those measures would hurt all carmakers that sell electric vehicles. But the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress are also trying to kill regulations that are especially beneficial to Tesla.
