Jho Low in Shanghai under alias? Anwar says he's read the news, will check with Home Ministry
GEORGE TOWN (July 19): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said he will verify with the Home Ministry following reports that wanted businessman Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, is currently living the high life in China.
Anwar affirmed that he had read about Low's latest purported sighting that has generated global buzz since yesterday.
'We have yet to get any information. Let me check,' he was quoted by the New Straits Times as telling reporters after officiating the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kompleks Madani Teluk Kumbar in Penang.
'I will need to check with the home minister about it,' he added, referring to Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
Former Wall Street Journal journalists Bradley Hope and Tom Wright who authored a best selling book titled Billion Dollar Whale claimed in a livestream yesterday that Low is residing in Green Hills, a luxury enclave in Shanghai.
They alleged that Low is living under a false identity – Constantinos Achilles Veis – and using a fake Australian passport while working with entities linked to the Chinese government.
Penang-born Low is accused of masterminding the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal and has been on the run since 2015, with his exact whereabouts remaining unconfirmed to date. – Malay Mail anwar ibrahim China Jho Low

Malaysian police to quiz Eda Ezrin, 5 others after release from Thai prison
RANTAU PANJANG: Police are expected to record statements from singer Eda Ezrin and five others to assist in investigations into their possible involvement in a drug syndicate operating in Malaysia. Federal Narcotics Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the statements were vital to help police in their ongoing probe. "All six individuals will have their statements recorded and undergo a urine test. "This is important to assist us as we want to verify have involved in any drug syndicates curremtly active in Malaysia," he told the New Straits Times. Hussein said the process was expected to take several hours. "I was informed that four of them had exited Malaysia through legal routes, while the other two are believed to have left using illegal entry points. "The two who used illegal routes will be charged under the Immigration Act, while the remaining four will be released after their statements are taken," he said. When asked if the procedure of recording statements and conducting urine tests was standard practice, Hussein said it was common for police to do so in order to verify facts or obtain necessary information. He also thanked Thai police for their cooperation. "They alerted us when the six individuals were released (from Narathiwat prison) and informed us that they would be handed over to the Thai Immigration authorities, who would then facilitate their transfer to the Malaysian police," he added. Eda Ezrin and the five, including her husband, were released by the Narathiwat court yesterday.

Indonesia's copper export to the US gets zero tariff
JAKARTA: Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani confirmed that Indonesian copper will be subject to a zero-per cent import tariff in the United States, while negotiations continue to expand this exemption to other commodities, reported Antara news agency. "For copper, we get a 0 per cent tariff," Roeslani stated during the 2025 Indonesia-Japan Executive Dialogue here on Wednesday (Aug 6). The minister stated that Indonesia is still negotiating with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to reduce import tariffs for other commodities, such as nickel and palm oil, and he expressed optimism about achieving favourable results for Indonesia. "We are negotiating (the tariff reduction) for other commodities. So far, we got (zero tariff) for copper, and other commodities such as nickel are likely to be approved, even if not at zero per cent, but at least lower than the current 19 per cent tariff," he remarked. According to Roeslani, Indonesia is also seeking a tariff-free status for other commodities that are not produced in the United States. Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia is seeking tariff reductions on commodities including crude palm oil, rubber, shorea wood, and copper derivatives. In the latest Indonesia-US trade agreement in July, the US administration agreed to reduce the tariff, which was initially set at 32 per cent by President Donald Trump last April, to 19 per cent. In exchange, Indonesia has committed to purchasing US$15 billion in US energy products and US$4.5 billion in US agricultural products, according to the US president on July 16. Indonesia also intends to purchase 50 Boeing jets, mostly Boeing 777 passenger jets, Trump stated. Govt proposes tobacco tax hike, cites health reforms
PUTRAJAYA: The government is considering a proposal to raise the tobacco tax to between 60 per cent and 70 per cent of retail prices. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the finance minister, said the proposal was consistent with the government's health reforms. "I agree with the spirit of the proposal," Anwar said when asked about the proposal. "I don't smoke, and I fully support anti-smoking campaigns." Anwar was speaking to reporters after attending the first engagement session for Budget 2026 with almost 300 stakeholders. Malaysia's current tobacco tax, which has not been revised since September 2014, accounts for about 58 per cent of retail prices. The country has no formal mechanism for periodic reviews or increases. Last week, Anwar said the government would expand its pro-health tax framework to include tobacco, vape products, and alcohol, beyond just sugary drinks, under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). He said the move was aimed at increasing revenue and driving behavioural change to reduce the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, and cancer. Health reforms are expected to be a key focus in Budget 2026, which will be tabled on Oct 10, according to Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
