Drewry WCI falls for 3rd week on weak US-bound cargo demand
This decline is directly attributed to low demand for US-bound cargo and signals that the recent surge in US imports, which followed the temporary suspension of higher US tariffs, is unlikely to have a lasting impact as initially expected.
Drewry World Container Index dropped 5.73 per cent to $2,812 per FEU on July 3 due to weak demand for US-bound cargo. Freight rates on major routes, including Shanghaiâ€'Los Angeles and Shanghaiâ€'New York, fell sharply week-on-week, though they remain higher than 8 weeks ago. Drewry expects further declines amid oversupply and uncertainty surrounding future US tariffs and penalties on Chinese vessels.
Freight rates from Shanghai to Los Angeles fell 15 per cent to $3,180 per 40ft container over the past week, although spot rates remain 17 per cent higher compared to eight weeks ago (May 8). Similarly, spot rates from Shanghai to New York dropped 11 per cent to $5,070 per 40ft container but are still up 39 per cent over the same eight-week period. Drewry expects spot rates to continue declining next week due to excess capacity and weak demand.
Freight rates from Shanghai to Genoa decreased 9 per cent to $3,751 per 40ft container, while rates from Shanghai to Rotterdam increased 8 per cent to $3,468 per 40ft container.
However, Drewry's Container Forecaster anticipates a further weakening of the supply-demand balance in the second half of this year, which may lead to continued declines in spot rates. The volatility and timing of rate changes will depend on future US tariffs under Trump's policies and potential capacity adjustments related to the imposition of US penalties on Chinese vessels—factors that remain uncertain.

They were getting live inputs from China. That is one place we really need to move fast,' said Lt Gen Singh. What is C4 ISR? C4ISR stands for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance. It is a military term that refers to a collection of systems and technologies designed to enhance situational awareness, streamline communication, and ensure seamless coordination among various units, ultimately enabling informed and effective decision-making during combat operations. Lt General Singh mentioned how Pakistan was getting help from Chinese satellites. China has deployed several reconnaissance/ surveillance satellites in the past few years compared to India while ISRO has to catch up with Beijing. How equipped is India compared to Israel and America? Israel has a strong air defence system that includes Irone dome, Arrow, David's Sling and America's THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) while the United States is also preparing for a multi-layered air defence system named Golden Dome. As for India, given its vast area and location, it needs an air defence system capable of protecting the whole nation. Lieutenant General Rahul R Singh highlighted the need for a similar, rather more powerful air defence system that can take on both China and Pakistan. 'There is a need for a robust air defence system. Our population centres need to be protected. We don't have the luxury of Israel's Iron Dome and a number of other air defence systems. We don't have such a system as our country is vast and such things cost a lot of money. This time, our population centres were not quite addressed, but next time, we need to be prepared for that,' he said.

China imposes anti-dumping duties on European brandy as trade tensions rise
China on Friday (July 4, 2025) imposed anti-dumping duties on European brandy, most notably cognac produced in France, as trade tensions between Beijing and United States allies continue to rise. The tariffs, effective on Saturday, will range from 27.7% to 34.9%, China's Commerce Ministry said. They are to be in place for five years and will not be applied retroactively. The announcement came during a European visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi aimed at ironing out trade differences. Mr. Wang was set to visit Paris after stops in Brussels and Berlin. The anti-dumping duties are the result of a probe China launched last year into European cognac, after the European Union undertook a probe into Chinese electric vehicles subsidies. 'The investigative authority finally ruled that the dumping of related imported brandy from the EU has existed,' read a statement by China's Commerce Ministry. 'The domestic brandy industry faces a material threat of damage, and there is a causal relationship between the dumping and the substantial damage threat.' Besides cognac, China has also launched investigations into European pork and dairy products. The brandy probe was the first and targeted mainly French makers of cognac and similar spirits such as Armagnac. China initially announced provisional tariffs of 30.6% to 39% on French cognac producer Remy Martin and other European brandies after a majority of E.U. countries approved duties on electric vehicles made in China. Wang was set to meet his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, later Friday in Paris. His European tour comes ahead of a China-EU summit to be focused on trade later this month in Beijing.
