Fitness meets fun at Elvis-inspired CROONERcize

Around 50 people attended the ELVISize, Salute to the KING event, at the Royal Canadian Legion, Dunsdon Branch #461 on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
Joan Minnery and Christine Wallace teamed up earlier this year to debut a new singing and movement program, fittingly called CROONERcize.
The event, which is held once a month, is designed to not only get people excited about exercise and movement, but to simultaneously raise funds for the local legion as well. So far they've raised $1,581.50 since January.
'We wanted to do a health and wellness type event in January just to help people kick off the year and get them moving,' said Wallace. 'We ended up having such a great turnout and people started asking if Joan would do it again, so we've been trying to host it once a month since then.'
'That first one we did was Stayin Alive in '25, then in February we did Hearts in Motion, and in March we did Retro Flower Power,' added Minnery. 'That one was great because it was all music from the 1960s and everybody came dressed up as hippies and such.'
With this past event being entirely dedicated to the king of rock and roll, many participants came dressed up in Elvis shirts and 1950s styled outfits.
Throughout the evening, Minnery had attendees clapping, swaying and singing along to some of the king's classic hits including, 'Jailhouse Rock,' 'All Shook Up,' 'Polk Salad Annie' and 'Kentucky Rain.'
'Its a workout, but we're singing and dancing, and I make the moves really easy so that everyone can do it. It's not hardcore Zumba, it's not line dancing and it's not aerobics; it's just movement with some of those things thrown into it,' said Minnery. 'It's great… they're getting a head to toe workout and they don't even realize it because while they think they're just singing along, they're actually expending their energy at the same time and so they're getting a better workout. I've had people come up and say things like, 'I'm not moving as much as I normally would, but I'm sweating so much' and it's because they're singing; that's the key to the whole thing and that's why we call it call it CROONERcize.'
Long-time friends, Debbie Cross and Jackie Haigh, said that this was their second and third time attending the event. The two said that they enjoy getting to move their bodies while having some fun at the same time.
'Jackie invited me along to the 60s event and I remember that after we finished up I just felt inspired to keep moving. It's funny because the following Tuesday, I actually told Jackie that I wished it was on again because it was just so worth it. Being a teacher, I worked outside all day today for track and field, and as tired as I was… I'm happy that I came and I'm feeling refreshed,' said Cross. 'The great thing about too is, Joan has told us that you don't have to follow it step by step, you can kind of just do your own movement, stay in tune with the music and just move to your own beat. That's nice because nobody's concerned with doing it the right or the wrong way, we all just giggle and laugh and do our own thing.'
This session also included a 50/50, a small raffle and a door prize for a VIP package and tickets to see Ginger Alden, who was engaged to Elvis at time of his death in 1977, during her upcoming live event in Hamilton on July 12. Minnery will be acting as the master of ceremonies for the event.
For those interested in attending, the next CROONERcize event will be themed all around country music.
'That next one will be on Tuesday, June 24, and as always, entry is just five-dollars per person, so come on out!' said Minnery.

Gemma Collins reveals she has pneumonia and shares concerning side effects

Gemma Collins has revealed she's been battling pneumonia for three weeks. The TOWIE star, 44, whose mother Joan had pneumonia in 2020, announced the news while sharing a selfie in bed on Instagram on Wednesday. 'Hey guys sorry been quiet I have pneumonia. I'm not as fast or on it as I usually am on the daily. I am still honoring my work commitments which is taking every bit of energy i have but will be back entertaining you all soon,' she wrote. The I'm A Celebrity! star explained that she felt 'tired' and 'out-of-breath' and had been visited by a doctor at home and put on a drip. Pneumonia is inflammation of the lungs, usually caused by an infection and symptoms typically include a combination of a dry cough, chest pain, fever, and difficulty breathing. Most people recover in two to four weeks, but babies, older people, and people with heart or lung conditions are at risk of getting seriously ill and may need treatment in hospital. Collins shared a photo of her arm attached to a drip on her Story and wrote: 'I'm having to take it easy which is not like me very slow and get so out of breath and tired so quick.' Alongside a snap of a doctor prescribing her medication, she added: 'Thank you to everyone helping me I've had pneumonia for the last three weeks and honestly can't thank everyone all the docs helping me.' The ITV star also posted a photo of her dog Gucci 'giving her lots of cuddles'. Collins' mother Joan was also struck down with pneumonia back in March 2020, with the TV personality thanking the NHS for helping her despite being 'overstretched' by the Covid-19 pandemic. 'Thank you to all the nurses who helped my mum [she has] pneumonia and on the mend. NHS thank you thank you thank you so over stretched right now,' she penned at the time. The Dancing On Ice alum explained that Joan was also suffering from rheumatoid arthritis – a long term autoimmune disorder that affects the joints – and was therefore classed as being at high risk of serious illness from Covid-19. Collins' health battles comes after she lost three stone, going from a size 26 to a size 20, in three months thanks to weight loss jabs. In April, the TV star revealed she was using the NHS-approved Mounjaro injections since January. While thrilled with her slimmed down frame, Collins admitted she was concerned that the medication could be responsible for her 'looking older' as she highlighted her 'next level' crow's feet. 'I really don't know what's happened to me, I really don't, It's just come on me overnight. But it has been a year since I've had any little tweakments,' she said. 'I don't know if it's since I've been losing weight. I sure haven't got 'Ozempic face' yet, but it would be the dream right now. 'I've always had a fuller face, as you know. I do like expression around my eyes. I want to look natural still. But this just isn't right. What has happened? I am 44 but this is taking it to levels that I never, ever imagined it'd get to.' 'Ozempic-face' is a term used to describe a gaunt appearance usually caused by rapid weight loss.

Pep Guardiola hails ‘extraordinary' Barcelona transfer target

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has early this week confirmed his appreciation for the talents of a leading member of the transfer wishlist at former club Barcelona. The player in question? Joan García. Advertisement The name of goalkeeper Joan has of course dominated the headlines across all of Europe over recent weeks. This comes amid the understanding that the 24-year-old, fresh off a spectacular campaign on the books of Espanyol, has been identified as a summer target on the part of a number of high-profile clubs. Chief amongst Joan's suitors are the aforementioned Barcelona, considered the current favourites to strike a deal for the talented shot-stopper. And one individual of the opinion that the Blaugrana would be securing for themselves a top-level player in the case of landing Joan, is the aforementioned Pep Guardiola. Advertisement Speaking during an exchange with the media on Monday, Guardiola was drawn on both Joan's talents, and the alleged interest of Manchester City in the Spaniard. And the former Barca headmaster went on to explain: 'I think he's a very good goalkeeper. According to the media, City is interested in 500 players! I don't know what will happen. But I've been told he's an extraordinary goalkeeper. All the reports we have point in that direction.' Conor Laird – GSFN
