Repaired runway reopens ahead of schedule at Newark Liberty
Newark Liberty Airport's runway 4L-22R has reopened for business nearly two weeks ahead of schedule, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages the airport. The runway was shut down April 15 for repairs, bringing Newark's options down to just two runways and contributing to a host of delays and problems. The reduced capacity exacerbated a well-publicized communication blackout in late April at Newark's air traffic control facility near Philadelphia, which led to a cascade of delays and cancellations. To manage traffic at Newark, United Airlines, which is Newark's primary airline, voluntarily cut back 35 flights a day, and the FAA later stepped in to cap operations at Newark at 56 hourly arrivals and departures. But in the meantime, the Port Authority said, it brought in additional crews, expanded shifts and enabled construction to take place 24/7 to bring the runway back online faster than anticipated. Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton said that although the runway repair work had a scheduled completion date of June 15, "as other issues have arisen related to Newark Liberty's capacity, the Port Authority took on the challenge to speed up construction." DOT secretary Sean Duffy praised the timeline, saying that it "puts us on a path to further reducing congestion." The $128 million project included milling and paving the runway surface, updating lighting, improving airfield signs with LED lighting, installing new underground electrical infrastructure and improving drainage, the Port Authority said. United CEO: FAA flight caps at Newark helped In an interview with journalist Kate Linebaugh the Wall Street Journal's Future of Everything event last week, United CEO Scott Kirby said that with the FAA managing takeoff and landing capacity, Newark would likely be "the most reliable" of the New York airports this summer. "We had the best weekend in history for reliability at Newark over the Memorial Day holiday," he said. "It's likely going to be the most reliable; you have highest on-time performance of any of the New York-area airports this summer because of the changes at the FAA." And, he added, "because we lost a lot of bookings ... there's more seats available, it's going to be the cheapest it's probably ever going to be in history. I don't really like that, but you ought to book, and it's going to be the least crowded." Kirby said that once the runway construction was completed United could return some of its cut capacity to Newark, from 280 daily flights up to 380 -- but still down from about 440 last year. "I think we'll have it permanently," Kirby said of the FAA traffic management. "That's going to fix Newark. That's the one thing — it's the only thing that we needed, and it's getting done."

My Mom Has Been to 40+ States for Work, and This $15 Carry-on Hack Is the Most Genius Tip She's Taught Me
It's safe to say my mom is a travel expert. After visiting 45 states and over 15 countries, she's learned a thing or two about packing the perfect bag and getting through TSA security with ease. I thought I knew all her tricks, but during her last visit to New York, I noticed something new. Instead of simply placing her personal item bag on top of her carry-on suitcase, she fastened them together . Apparently, she's been doing this for years . In 2016, my mom discovered the Travelon Bag Bungee on Amazon and hasn't traveled without it. The handy contraption, which is a longtime-favorite travel accessory for flight attendants and frequent fliers, keeps her personal item bag off her shoulders, allowing her to navigate the airport with ease. It's no wonder she always beats me to the gate. Thanks to its low-profile design, the luggage strap blends in seamlessly with her luggage while keeping her items protected. Plus, the mechanics are simple. You just have to attach the cord to your luggage handle, then place your personal item on top, and lock it in place. The rope is made with a flexible material and can stretch to accommodate anything from a small purse to a large carry-on. It can even hold up to 40 pounds, and with some careful maneuvering, you can position it to hold multiple bags in place. According to my mother, buying this device has saved her from spending money on new luggage. It's especially helpful for business travel. 'Some of the travel bags that are out there aren't stylish for work,' she said. 'I don't want to come into a meeting with a backpack, so having the bungee allows me to keep my work tote.' Rest assured, this item is perfect for a vacation too. If you tend to overpack (like me), the bungee-cord system will prevent your items from spilling out. Whether you're hoping to free up your hands while traveling or want to ensure your luggage is safe, the Travelon Bag Bungee is sure to come in handy. If you're interested in trying this hack, you can grab one on Amazon before your next trip. Scroll down for even more genius luggage straps to add to your travel day repertoire, starting at just $7. Construction on Arnold Palmer Regional Airport's new terminal hits turbulence
While the new terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport is nearing completion, work is also underway on a new terminal at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity Township. But their construction project has hit a little bit of turbulence in the past few weeks, stemming from the slow delivery of building supplies. "Delayed" is not a term anyone loves to hear at an airport. But as Gabe Monzo, the executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, says, "delayed" is a term that sometimes just comes with the aviation territory, even when you are talking about delays with the construction of a new 32,000 square foot terminal building and the steel needed to complete it. "It's domestic steel, it is not imported, so it's going to take a while," Monzo said. "We deal with it accordingly and we stop the project, and we will carry it on once the steel arrives. We are anticipating that within a month or so it should be here." Monzo says he is not sure why there is a backup on the steel delivery, but he says the construction of this new terminal is still in good shape, with a phase one completion now on track for March of next year instead of December this year. A full construction completion of all phases is still looking at an on-time arrival in 2027. The new terminal building is landing with a price tag of around $22 million that Monzo says has been fully funded, and it is one of three construction projects at the airport right now. The other two are a taxiway improvement project that should be wrapping up at the end of this year and the recently completed elevator installation on their 65-foot tower. Despite all the work going on, however, Monzo says their daily flights on Spirit Airlines to Orlando and Myrtle Beach, as well as their twice-weekly flights on Spirit to Fort Lauderdale, have not been affected. He says they really need the new terminal space sooner rather than later because Arnold Palmer has become such a popular place to fly in and out of. "You got to remember that when you are landing an Airbus, you have 175 people getting off and 175 people getting on," said Monzo. "So, it's 350 people in the terminal building and right now our terminal building is rather small for 350 people to be walking around."
