Two-thirds of Umno division leaders call for Najib to be put under house arrest
In a late-night media conference, Wangsa Maju Umno division chief Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Shafei Abdullah announced that 160 out of 191 Umno divisions are urging Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to facilitate Najib's transition from Kajang Prison to house arrest without further delay.
Najib, a former Umno President, is currently serving a 12-year prison sentence for misusing RM42mil of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.
Mohd Shafei highlighted that the Pahang palace confirmed the addendum's existence in a letter dated Jan 4, alongside the Court of Appeal's verdict on Jan 6.
"There is no more excuse to delay the execution of the addendum," he asserted, urging the Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar to support the government by withdrawing the appeal against the Jan 6 judgement.
He called for all Umno divisions that have yet to hold their general meetings to pass a special resolution on this royal addendum, emphasizing the importance of party solidarity in supporting the institution of the Malay Rulers and upholding justice.
He stressed that the addendum is a matter of legal sanctity, involving the Malay Rulers and justice for all, not an individual concern.
"Our meeting was initiated by ourselves and is in no way an affront against the Umno President or the deputy president," he stated.
Furthermore, the division leaders are demanding a Royal Commission of Inquiry into former Attorney General Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh for allegedly concealing the royal addendum, now serving as a Federal Court judge.
"The act of hiding the addendum by the former AG is against a constitutional monarchy, violating principles of transparency and accountability," Mohd Shafei added, stressing that this has denied justice for Najib.
On Jan 6, Najib's counsel had presented the Pahang palace's letter to the Court of Appeal, confirming Sultan Abdullah's order for house arrest. On Jan 11, Anwar acknowledged that the addendum had been received by the then AG.

KUALA LUMPUR : The government has been urged by Nizar Najib, son of former prime minister Najib Razak, to accord the same respect and urgency to a royal order on his father's house arrest request as it did to the call that led to the formation of the unity government. 'This issue (of the addendum) has been going on forever. How much longer are we going to drag this out when the decree already exists?' he said at a press conference here today. Nizar, who is Najib's eldest son, said failure to carry out the order could damage public trust and respect for royal directives. 'It's the same as when we honoured the royal decree to form the unity government. No one questioned it and, in fact, everyone supported it. So what's the difference between the decree to form the unity government and the one to implement the addendum?' he said. Last week, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government will follow-up on the royal order as soon as possible following legal procedures 'but it depends heavily on the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which we must all respect'. The addendum was made to a Pardons Board decision to reduce Najib's sentence of a jail term and fine, and purportedly orders Najib's jail sentence to be served under house arrest. Najib had been convicted of corruption and abuse of power in the SRC International case. The Federal Court was told on July 9 that Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar had on July 2 acknowledged the existence of the addendum but was disputing whether it was genuine or valid. At the press conference, Rosmadi Ismail, chairman of the NKB1Msia Club, called on the prime minister to take full responsibility in ensuring the addendum is implemented. He said Najib deserved fair and just treatment under the law as a statesman who had contributed significantly to national development.

Ex-deputy chairman fails in review bid over order for fresh insider trading trial
A Court of Appeal bench said there is no breach of natural justice in the findings of the previous panel. PUTRAJAYA : The Court of Appeal has rejected a review application by a former executive deputy chairman of Malaysian Merchant Marine Bhd, whose insider trading case was ordered by another Court of Appeal bench to be reheard in the High Court. A three-member bench chaired by Justice Ruzima Ghazali said Ramesh Rajaratnam's application had no merit because there was no breach of natural justice committed by the previous bench. Ruzima said the previous panel, in its grounds of judgment, did not base its decision solely on several provisions in the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC). 'They addressed at length the points and authorities raised by parties. There is no breach of natural justice in the findings of the previous panel,' he said. Justices Azmi Ariffin and Hayatul Akmal Abdul Aziz also heard the application. Ramesh had been found guilty by a sessions court on three charges of insider trading, but the High Court set aside the decision upon his appeal. His complaint was that the previous panel only looked into Sections 173, 180, 182(a) and 422 of the CPC in setting aside his acquittal and ordering a rehearing of his appeal before a new High Court judge. He said this was not canvassed before the panel and only appeared in the grounds of judgment. Ruzima said the threshold for review was high. 'As the apex court, as in this case, we have always been cautious when exercising the power of review of its earlier decision, as on the face of it, it goes against the principle of finality,' he said. He said review powers of the court may only be exercised in exceptional cases if there had been a significant injustice or the applicant had no alternative remedy. Lawyers Gurdial Singh Nijar and Abraham Au appeared for Ramesh in today's proceedings, while Hasley Tajudin, Law Wen Zhen and Danial Ariff Tung represented the Securities Commission Malaysia. Last year, the Court of Appeal said the High Court, as an appellate court, could not decide an appeal solely on the trial court's errors or omissions. Justice Wong Kian Kheong said the High Court had a judicial duty under Section 316 of the CPC to consider the merits of the case. '(Otherwise), there would have been an abdication of the High Court's judicial duty,' he said in the judgment setting aside Ramesh's acquittal. Wong said the High Court was also duty-bound to consider whether the errors or omissions by the trial court had caused a failure of justice as stated under Section 422 of the CPC. On May 6, 2024, Justice Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, now a Federal Court judge, led a three-member bench in allowing the prosecution's appeal, and remitted the matter to be heard by a new High Court judge. The other member of the bench was Justice Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim. Vazeer said even though there was judicial copying in the sessions court's grounds of decision, and it was a non-speaking judgment, the High Court committed a legal error in granting an acquittal. Ramesh was charged in the Kuala Lumpur sessions court on April 29, 2015 with three counts of insider trading under Section 188(2)(a) of the Capital Markets and Services Act 2007. On Sept 11, 2019, the trial judge convicted him on all three charges. and sentenced him to five years' imprisonment and a fine of RM3 million on each charge. The prison terms were ordered to run concurrently. Insider trading carries a punishment of imprisonment not exceeding 10 years and a fine of not less than RM1 million. On May 20, 2021, the High Court allowed Ramesh's appeal and set aside the conviction and sentence on all three charges. At the Court of Appeal, the Securities Commission, with the public prosecutor's consent, decided to pursue its appeal on one charge only.

About 30 DAP MPs visit Umno HQ for TVET briefing by Zahid
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 30 DAP members of parliament made a historic visit to the Umno headquarters at Menara Dato Onn earlier this week, signalling growing maturity and cooperation within the unity government. The MPs were attending a briefing on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), hosted by Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also chairs the national TVET Council. Kota Kinabalu MP Chan Foong Hin, in his Facebook post, described the occasion as a first for both parties, marking a significant milestone in post-GE15 political collaboration. "It marked the first time that such a large group of DAP MPs visited Umno's headquarters, a sign of maturity and cooperation within the unity government," Chan said. "The Madani government is not perfect. But we are serious in discharging our responsibilities. We are working to overcome ideological and party differences for the sake of national progress. Nation-building requires unity, not uniformity, and that's the spirit we're committed to," he said. Umno's alliance with DAP in the formation of the unity government following the 2022 general election marked a dramatic shift in Malaysia's political dynamics. Once fierce adversaries, the two parties have since taken steps to demonstrate a new spirit of bipartisan cooperation. In June last year, Loke made headlines as the first DAP leader to attend the Umno general assembly alongside Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Several months later, Zahid, Asyraf and Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir attended DAP's national convention. The rare show of unity comes amid a series of developments that have further defined the government's agenda in recent weeks. Among them was the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) by Anwar, which sets out a strategic five-year blueprint to elevate Malaysia into a formidable middle power. The plan outlines long-term priorities in economic resilience, innovation and inclusive growth. Separately, Malaysia also secured a revision to a previously imposed 25 per cent US import tariff, bringing it down to 19 per cent. The move is expected to benefit local industries, especially rubber glove and furniture manufacturers, who can now compete on a more level playing field with Asean counterparts. Chan said these achievements demonstrated that the government's consistent, strategic approach was yielding results. "PMX has proven that his strategy works, and it's time we continue to stand behind him," he said.
