Hamas says agreement reached with US envoy on framework for Gaza ceasefire
ISTANBUL (BERNAMA-ANADOLU): The Palestinian group Hamas on Wednesday (May 28) announced it had reached an agreement with United States (US) Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on a general framework for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported.
"We have reached an agreement on a general framework with Witkoff that ensures a permanent ceasefire, a complete withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Gaza, and the unhindered entry of humanitarian aid," Hamas said in a statement.
The agreement also includes the establishment of a professional committee to manage Gaza's affairs once a ceasefire is declared, the group said.
Hamas added that it would release 10 living hostages and the remains of several others in exchange for a mutually agreed number of Palestinian prisoners under guarantees from mediators.
"We are on the precipice of sending out a new term sheet that hopefully will be delivered later on today," Witkoff told reporters at the White House.
"I have some very good feelings about getting to a long-term resolution -- a temporary ceasefire and a long-term resolution, a peaceful resolution of that conflict," he added.
Witkoff said that US President Donald Trump would review the proposal once it was delivered.
There was no immediate comment from mediators Egypt or Qatar on the announcement by Hamas. - Bernama-Anadolu

King calls on people to bolster unity, reminds leaders to avoid divisive politics
KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has reminded leaders against politicising sensitive issues, which could fuel discord within society and threaten the nation's stability. His Majesty said the existence of more political parties or factions within parties would lead to a widened rift among the people, resulting in escalating enmity among them. "Use your wisdom before making any decisions. There is no greater gift to me than a united rakyat. "I have mentioned before that there is a virus that will strike our nation. "Now, this virus has begun to spread and cannot be cured. I often speak of this so that we do not easily forget," His Majesty said. Sultan Ibrahim was speaking during the Royal Address at the Investiture Ceremony for the year 2025 in conjunction with the King's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara. Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, the Queen of Malaysia, was also in attendance. Present at the ceremony were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Cabinet Ministers. Unity not optional but a national requirement, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) has stressed that national unity is no longer an option but a key requirement to ensure continued development. He said unity is the foundation of development and a catalyst for progress. "Malaysia will only remain strong if we stand together, united. "Stability and national unity are the basic conditions for all progress. In a world that is rapidly changing and full of challenges, unity is not an option, it is a necessity," he said in his congratulatory speech in conjunction with the official birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, at Istana Negara here on Monday (June 2). Anwar said the government, under the auspices and guidance of His Majesty, will continue to be committed to implementing a comprehensive reform agenda based on the Madani principles. "Materialistic development alone is certainly not enough. In fact, it must be balanced with human values, social justice and human kindness," said the Prime Minister. He emphasised that the development of infrastructure and public facilities should not be limited to mega projects like the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). Instead, equal attention must be given to upgrading and enhancing essential services such as schools, hospitals and transport networks. "The people are not only promised hope, but also protected tangibly and continuously,' he said. The Prime Minister also emphasised that the strategy to increase the people's income would continue to be driven through economic structural reforms, the influx of high-quality investments and the strengthening of the technology and innovation ecosystem. He said every citizen should have the opportunity to progress, regardless of racial or cultural background. – Bernama
