Hamas says agreement reached with US envoy on framework for Gaza ceasefire
ISTANBUL (BERNAMA-ANADOLU): The Palestinian group Hamas on Wednesday (May 28) announced it had reached an agreement with United States (US) Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff on a general framework for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. "We have reached an agreement on a general framework with Witkoff that ensures a permanent ceasefire, a complete withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from Gaza, and the unhindered entry of humanitarian aid," Hamas said in a statement. The agreement also includes the establishment of a professional committee to manage Gaza's affairs once a ceasefire is declared, the group said. Hamas added that it would release 10 living hostages and the remains of several others in exchange for a mutually agreed number of Palestinian prisoners under guarantees from mediators. "We are on the precipice of sending out a new term sheet that hopefully will be delivered later on today," Witkoff told reporters at the White House. "I have some very good feelings about getting to a long-term resolution -- a temporary ceasefire and a long-term resolution, a peaceful resolution of that conflict," he added. Witkoff said that US President Donald Trump would review the proposal once it was delivered. There was no immediate comment from mediators Egypt or Qatar on the announcement by Hamas. - Bernama-Anadolu

WHO assembly approves raising Palestinian flag at HQ, offices
GENEVA (BERNAMA-ANADOLU): The World Health Assembly (WHA) on Monday (May 26) voted in favour of allowing the flags of non-member observer states to be raised at the World Health Organisation (WHO) headquarters and offices, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reports. The move clears the way for the Palestinian flag to be flown alongside those of WHO member states. The decision was approved with 95 votes in favour, four against - Israel, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Germany - and 27 abstentions. According to the resolution, the flags of non-member observer states at the UN will be placed after WHO member states, in alphabetical order. It also states that this move does not imply membership status in the organisation. Discussions focused on the Palestinian flag specifically, with UN General Assembly Resolution 70/15 cited as the legal basis. The draft resolution was proposed by 20 countries, including Malaysia, Algeria, Indonesia, Turkiye, and several Arab and African states. - Bernama-Anadolu

Former US president Biden diagnosed with prostate cancer
ISTANBUL/ANKARA — Former United States (US) President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an 'aggressive form' of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing a statement released on Sunday from his personal office. 'Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms,' the statement said. The disease was confirmed on Friday and 'characterised by a Gleason score of 9' with 'metastasis to the bone.' 'While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,' Biden's office noted. The office said the 82-year-old former president and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team. US President Donald Trump reacted to the news on his Truth Social platform. 'Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden's recent medical diagnosis,' he said. 'We extend our warmest and best wishes to (his wife) Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.' Biden served as president from 2021 to 2025. — BERNAMA-ANADOLU

A medical source reported that 16 people were killed in Israeli shelling of a school-turned-shelter in the Al-Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza City. Several people remain trapped under the rubble, the source added. Wednesday's strike followed an earlier attack on Tuesday (May 6), in which at least 33 people were killed and 73 others injured in an Israeli strike on a school in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. According to data released by Gaza's government media office, at least 234 shelters and displacement centres have been targeted by the Israeli army since the outbreak of its war in October 2023. Another medical source said at least 22 more people were killed in a separate strike on a crowded market on Al-Wahda Street in Gaza City, with several children and a journalist among the victims. An Anadolu reporter noted that the market, filled with shops and stalls, was crowded at the time of the attack. Eight people, including a child, were also killed in a strike targeting a house in the southern city of Khan Younis, according to a medical source. In the eastern part of Khan Younis, a Palestinian and his wife were killed when Israeli forces shelled their home in the town of Bani Suhaila, the same source said. Three more Palestinians, including a child, were killed in the Munasira refugee camp in eastern Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, medics reported. An Israeli airstrike on a house in the Tel al-Zaatar neighbourhood of the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza killed three people and injured several others. Witnesses also reported that the Israeli army carried out home demolitions in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. Since Oct 7, 2023, the Israeli army has launched a brutal military onslaught on Gaza, killing more than 52,600 people, mostly women and children. — Bernama-Anadolu
