Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS), has shared a glimpse of his recovery process following his 18-day space mission.
In a video posted online, Shukla is seen taking assisted steps and later walking on a treadmill as part of his physical rehabilitation. 'I have received a lot of messages regarding my health and wishing me a speedy recovery,' he wrote in the caption. 'I want to thank you all and also give an update.'
Explaining the effects of space travel, Shukla noted that time in orbit impacts the body in several ways — from fluid redistribution and changes in heart rate to a temporary loss of balance and muscle strength. 'These are adaptations to the new environment,' he said. 'Once the body gets used to this and we return to gravity, these adjustments happen once again.'
He added that while recovery varies from person to person, the body is quick to respond. 'I was surprised to observe the pace with which our body can adjust to new settings,' he remarked.
According to Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Shukla and his three fellow crew members remain in quarantine until July 23, as per standard post-mission procedures. The isolation period allows doctors to monitor their condition and assist them in readapting to Earth's gravity.
Experts note that extended stays in space can result in weakened muscles, bone loss and coordination issues, making rehabilitation essential for a smooth return to everyday life.
Shukla's journey is being hailed as a milestone for India's space ambitions. During the mission, he completed over 310 orbits of Earth and covered a distance exceeding 13 million kilometres.
Shukla, along with three fellow astronauts, safely returned to Earth with a splashdown off the coast of California at 5:31 AM New York time on July 15. The mission marked a significant step for Texas-based company Axiom Space, which aims to collaborate with nations around the world to make space more accessible.
The crew had launched into orbit last month aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, which lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. They spent 18 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS) before heading back to Earth.

Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace on Friday successfully test fired Kalam-1200 , the first-stage solid booster of its Vikram-1 rocket, at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota , taking a major step towards the rocket's maiden orbital launch later this year. The 30-tonne carbon composite motor, developed with support from ISRO is named after former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. It is the largest solid rocket stage ever built by India's private sector. At 11 metres long, it can generate nearly 1,200 kN of peak thrust in a vacuum, about 10 times the power of a Boeing 737 Max engine. The latest test ran for about 110 seconds, with the booster delivering thrust within expected limits throughout the burn, the startup said. Pawan Kumar Chandana, cofounder and CEO, Skyroot Aerospace, said,'Witnessing Kalam-1200 roar to life at the test stand was an exhilarating yet humbling experience. It is the culmination of years of hard engineering by the young team at Skyroot.' Engineers also validated its ballistic performance, burn rate, thermal protection system, and flex-nozzle steering mechanism which will guides the rocket's trajectory in flight. During the launch, Kalam-1200 will lift Vikram-1 to an altitude of over 50 km before the upper stages take over to place satellites in orbit . The solid propellant casting for the motor was done at ISRO's SDSC-SHAR facilities. Space regulator and promoter IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka congratulated the team on X, calling the milestone 'a landmark achievement.' Founded in 2018 by former ISRO engineers, Hyderabad-based Skyroot is developing its Vikram-series rockets to offer on-demand, customised launches for small satellites. It has since raised about $100 million from investors including GIC and Temasek. The Vikram-1 launch, expected later this year, will be a landmark moment, making Skyroot the first Indian startup to put a privately built rocket into orbit.

National Critical Mineral Mission to support innovation in exploration, processing, and recycling of key minerals to boost domestic tech and reduce import dependence Saket Kumar New Delhi The Indian government has set a target to support the filing of 1,000 patents in the critical minerals sector by 2030–31 as part of its National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), aiming to boost domestic innovation across the mineral value chain, the Ministry of Mines said in a statement on Friday. Approved by the Union Cabinet in January this year, the NCMM is focused on building self-reliance in critical minerals needed for green energy and strategic sectors. As part of this effort, the government has begun tracking and supporting patent activity in technologies linked to the exploration, extraction, processing and recycling of critical minerals. Sixty-two patent applications related to critical minerals were filed in May and June 2025, and 10 patents were granted during the same period. These include innovations involving lithium, nickel, titanium, tungsten and vanadium — minerals key to clean energy, electronics and strategic technologies. Examples of recent patents include technologies for sodium-ion batteries, tungsten–polymer composites, and metal oxide nanoparticles doped with rare earth elements like ytterbium.
