'I congratulate the forces for killing three terrorists who carried out Pahalgam terror attack in April. These are the terrorists who killed people in Pahalgam,' the Defence Minister said.
Initiating a debate on Operation Sindoor in the Rajya Sabha, Singh congratulated the forces for killing three terrorists who were involved in the attack in which 26 people were killed.
New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack have been killed by Indian forces, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed Parliament on Tuesday.
He said Home Minister Amit Shah has provided details of the joint operation by the forces in the Lok Sabha.
Singh said post the Pahalgam attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with the service chiefs, and gave them freehand to use their wisdom, strategic understanding and regional security situation to decide on the response.
He said the military leadership also showed maturity, and stressed that India's response – Operation Sindoor – was aimed at giving a clear message that India will take strong action and go to any extent against terror.
'Our action was in self defence, it was not expansionist…The aim was to destroy terror infrastructure and give the message of zero tolerance for terror,' Singh said.
'The politic-military objective was to punish Pakistan for using terrorism as a proxy war,' he added.
Singh said Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) urged India to stop the hostilities, and India accepted it on the condition that the operation would be suspended, not ended.
'If Pakistan commits any terror incidents in future, we will relaunch Operation Sindoor without hesitation,' he said.
Earlier, as the Upper House reassembled at 2 pm, after it was adjourned around 11 am, Deputy Chairman Harivansh said the discussion on Operation Sindoor would be taken up, and urged the members to be mindful of the sensitive nature of the issue.
Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien tried to raise a point of order. Harivansh however did not allow it stating that it was not related to the topic of discussion.
TMC MPs raised slogans against the SIR, and some MPs also trooped into the Well.
As the Chair did not allow the Opposition MPs to speak, MPs from TMC and some other INDIA bloc parties staged a walkout from the House. PTI AO MJH NKD SKC ANU

Parliament extends President's Rule in Manipur by six months

The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed a statutory resolution to extend the President's Rule in Manipur by six months. The resolution, passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday, was approved by the Upper House amid protests by Opposition MPs over the Election Commission conducting a special intensive revision of Bihar's electoral rolls. The resolution, moved by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, was approved through a voice vote. President's Rule was imposed in the state on February 13, four days after Bharatiya Janata Party leader N Biren Singh resigned as the chief minister. His resignation came amid ethnic clashes between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities. At least 260 persons have been killed and more than 59,000 persons displaced since the violence broke out in May 2023. There were periodic upticks in violence in 2024. Singh resigned as chief minister amid allegations from Kuki-Zomi-Hmar groups that his response to the violence was partisan and that he had stoked majoritarianism. The BJP leader stepped down a day before his government was to face a no-confidence motion and floor test in the Assembly. The Opposition Congress had described Singh's resignation as belated and akin to 'shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted '. The last time President's Rule was imposed in Manipur was between June 2, 2001, and March 5, 2002, for 276 days due to political instability. President's Rule under Article 356 transfers the powers and responsibilities of the state government to the Union government and the functions of the state Legislature to Parliament for the duration of its enforcement. The only exception is the operation of High Courts, which are unaffected.

Kremlin slams Trump tariff pressure on India over Russian oil as illegal

Russia accused the United States on Tuesday (August 5, 2025) of exerting illegal trade pressure on India after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened again to raise tariffs on India over its purchases of Russian oil. "We hear many statements that are in fact threats, attempts to force countries to cut trade relations with Russia. We do not consider such statements to be legal," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "We believe that sovereign countries should have and do have the right to choose their own trading partners, partners for trade and economic cooperation, and to choose for themselves the forms of trade and economic cooperation that are in the interests of a particular country." Mr. Trump has said that from Friday (August 8, 2025) he will impose new sanctions on Russia as well as on countries that buy its energy exports, unless Moscow takes steps to end its 3-1/2 year conflict with Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has signalled no change in Russia's stance on the war, despite the looming deadline. India has called Mr. Trump's threats "unjustified" and vowed to protect its economic interests, deepening a trade rift between the two major economies. Two Indian government sources told Reuters on the weekend that India will keep purchasing oil from Russia despite Mr. Trump's threats.

Parents split over Delhi Education Bill; protest planned outside assembly

Synopsis The Delhi government's new education bill has sparked controversy, dividing parents over its impact on fee regulation. While some welcome the proposed transparency measures and structured framework for fee increases, others are protesting, fearing a weakening of parental rights and reduced accountability for private schools. Concerns center on restrictions to individual complaints and access to civil courts. PTI Representational As the Delhi government tables the new education bill in the assembly, parents across the city appear divided. While some families welcomed the move as a step towards fee transparency, others announced a protest outside the assembly today, calling it a blow to parental rights, reported bill mandates that fee-related complaints must have the backing of at least 15% of parents from a school to be officially registered. Several parents opposed to the bill say this condition will stifle individual complaints and discourage families from raising genuine per the TOI report, they also objected to provisions that, according to them, allow schools to introduce ambiguous fee categories and validate charges previously deemed unauthorised. Protesters further claim that removing the requirement for regular financial audits reduces accountability and oversight.'What is particularly alarming is a clause that restricts parents from approaching civil courts over fee disputes. This provision, along with the overall weakening of the Delhi School Education Act rules, will leave families vulnerable to exploitation. Instead of safeguarding the interests of students and parents, the bill appears to favour private school lobbies,' TOI quoted one parent as saying. Education minister defends the draft Delhi's Education Minister Ashish Sood said the bill was introduced within four months of assuming office. 'Within four months of our tenure, we are on track to introduce this bill. I assure people that their concerns will be deliberated in Vidhan Sabha and addressed,' he said. Despite the minister's reassurance, several parents said they would gather outside the assembly today to protest. One of them said, 'This protest is about protecting our children's future and standing up for an accountable, equitable education system.'Supporters see promise in proposed measures Meanwhile, other parents believe the bill addresses several long-standing concerns. A parent association from a private school said the bill brings in 'a structured and transparent framework' to regulate school fees.'It proposes prior approval for fee increases, mandatory public disclosure of school financial records and penalties for violations. These measures are a significant step forward,' the group assembly is expected to take up discussion on the bill today. (With inputs from TOI)
