Councillors seek intervention of Stalin in fulfilling residents' demand to rename key roads

The Hindu09-05-2025

:
A section of councillors in Chennai has sought the intervention of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to rename certain roads in the city.
On Thursday, MDMK councillor S. Jeevan submitted an online representation to the Chief Minister's office, demanding that Triplicane High Road be renamed after Oviya Perunthagai Venugopal Sarma, the artist who created the universally accepted portrait of Tiruvalluvar.
'Oviya Perunthagai Venugopal Sarma painted the portrait of Tiruvalluvar — free from caste or religious bias and firmly rooted in Dravidian ideology — after doing meticulous research on Tirukkural. He lived near Triplicane High Road, on Besant Road. Despite my repeated appeals to rename Triplicane High Road in his honour, there has been no response from the Chennai Corporation Council,' Mr. Jeevan said.
'Both Anna and Kalaignar had deep admiration for the artist and his invaluable contribution to Dravidian art and culture,' he added.
DMK councillor T.V. Shemmozhi sought the installation of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's statue on Anna Nagar Second Avenue and the renaming of the stretch after Dravidian stalwart Perasiriyar K. Anbazhagan, who inculcated the younger generation with ideals of rationalism, based on extensive research of Tirukkural and other literary works.
'Thousands of young IAS aspirants, preparing for the civil services examination, throng the important stretch of Anna Nagar Second Avenue, because of the presence of a large number of coaching centres in the area. The renaming of the road will inspire the younger generation to learn about the great leaders of Dravidian ideology, which is crucial for peace, harmony, modernisation, growth and development of India,' Mr. Shemmozhi said.
AIADMK councillor J. John said: 'Many roads in Korattur are named after a particular caste of people who lived in the area several centuries ago. Now, residents of all castes live here in peace and harmony without social discrimination. So we request the State government to rename such roads after leaders who promoted social harmony,' Mr. John said.
The Council refused to permit the councillors to speak, whenever they tried to bring up the need for renaming the roads, claiming that the government had to take a decision, he said.

'Census delay no accident, delimitation not a coincidence', says Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin on Friday accused the BJP-led central government of deliberately delaying the national Census and orchestrating the delimitation process with a hidden agenda. Calling the Census delay 'no accident' and the delimitation exercise 'no coincidence,' he said, 'The danger I warned of is at our doorstep.' In a post on social media, he alleged: 'There is a sinister design in how the BJP-led Union Government is implementing the national Census and the subsequent delimitation. Developed states, especially in the non-Hindi speaking South, which followed population control norms, will now be punished.' He argued that states which disregarded population control for years would be rewarded with additional seats in Parliament. This, he said, distorts the federal structure and unfairly benefits neglect over progress. Stalin noted that he had already 'warned about this design' and cited senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's detailed explanation of 'how this sleight of hand is unfolding.' He said it was time to remain vigilant and prepare strategies to defend the South's representation. 'The 2027 Census will form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data. This gives the Union BJP government the means to restructure parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the southern states,' he alleged. While the Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the concerns of affected states will be considered, Stalin described such assurances as vague. He insisted that the situation calls for a clear commitment in Parliament and the introduction of a Constitutional amendment. He added: 'Just look at what happened after Article 370 was abrogated. The Union government spoke of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory. This is the track record of BJP we are dealing with.' Stalin warned that if delimitation is carried out using the 2027 Census, the democratic influence of the southern states would be severely diminished. He also criticised the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), saying, 'Betrayers like the AIADMK choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival,' but that the people of Tamil Nadu, under the DMK's leadership, would not allow the state to suffer for its developmental success.

BJP didn't intervene in PMK troubles: Nainar

Madurai: BJP did not make any attempt to bring peace between PMK founder S Ramadoss and his son Anbumani Ramadoss, party state president Nainar Nagenthran told reporters in Madurai on Friday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He refused to comment when asked if auditor S Gurumurthy was sent by BJP to strike an alliance with PMK in the 2026 assembly election. Responding to questions on whether Union home minister Amit Shah spoke to Ramadoss during Gurumurthy's meeting with him, Nagenthran said although BJP believes in harmony, the party was not part of any negotiation between PMK leaders. He said Gurumurthy was trying to 'make good things happen in Tamil Nadu.' BJP would rally all political powers to dethrone DMK, he said. Asked if DMDK would be part of the BJP alliance, he said, 'wait and watch. ' On Ramadoss's statement that an alliance with BJP was struck during the Lok Sabha elections against his wish, Nagenthran said he did not want to discuss past events. He said Amit Shah would not meet Anbumani Ramadoss during his June 8 visit to Madurai. To a question if BJP chose Madurai to conduct party functionaries' meet because DMK recently held its general council meet there, Nainar said Madurai was chosen because it is an auspicious place and everything started here would be successful. He said Amit Shah who arrives on Saturday would would visit Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple on Sunday and later meet the state core committee members. In the evening, he would address party functionaries' meeting. On Friday morning, Nainar participated in the bhoomi pooja event organised at the place where Amit Shah would be attending the functionaries' meeting.

Palaniswami accuses Chief Minister Stalin of using delimitation as distraction

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday accused Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of using the issue of delimitation of Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies as a distraction to 'cover up the failures and scams' of the DMK government. In a reply to the Chief Minister's post on his social media handle, Mr. Palaniswami urged Mr. Stalin to 'delimit' illicit liquor, rowdyism, corruption, and the 'arrogance and stranglehold' of his family on the State. As for delimitation, he reiterated that his party would 'never allow' Tamil Nadu's representation to be reduced or 'our voice to be silenced', a point he had made to Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah. Further, the party would 'fiercely defend Tamil Nadu's rightful voice and future' when delimitation came into effect. Mr. Palaniswami, who contended that it was only in the DMK-led front that constituents, at the time of joining the bloc, had 'signed a charter of slavery', maintained that the people of the State were clear about the issues of delimitation and imposition of Hindi. They were 'only suffering from the loss' of livelihood, safety, and security.
