Here's where to watch Esa-Pekka Salonen conduct after S.F. Symphony departure
The Finnish conductor and composer, who stepped into the role after Michael Tilson Thomas retired in 2020, announced his impending departure in March 2024. Since then, the institution has been embroiled in controversy — and nowhere near hiring a replacement.
What's more, after Salonen's last scheduled concert on June 14, during which he will conduct Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2, 'Resurrection,' it doesn't seem Bay Area audiences will be able to catch him again at Davies Symphony Hall anytime soon. While a joint statement from Symphony CEO Matthew Spivey and Salnonen earlier this year noted 'Esa-Pekka's return to conduct the Orchestra in future seasons,' the Symphony's 2025-26 schedule notably does not have the conductor on the calendar.
In the meantime, that means fans must travel — either overseas or as close as Southern California.
Salonen is currently expected to spend much of his summer abroad, starting with five shows at Austria's Salzburg Festival — July 27, Aug. 2, 10, 15 and 18 — where he'll be performing alongside the Vienna Philharmonic.
He will then perform with the Orchestre de Paris during its European Tour in Lucerne, Switzerland, on Aug. 29-30, and in Berlin, Germany, on Sept. 1.
Just after San Francisco Symphony's 2025-26 season is set to begin Sept. 5, Salonen will make a Sept. 7 appearance at the Baltic Sea Festival in Stockholm, Sweden, alongside the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra before returning to the U.S.
He is scheduled to spend October on the East Coast, first with the New York Philharmonic in New York City Oct. 3-5, and 9-11, and then with the Philadelphia Orchestra in its hometown on Oct. 16-18.
After closing out the year with engagements in Paris and Stockholm, Salonen will head back to California in 2026 for performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on Jan. 9-11 and Jan. 17-18.
He'll then join the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Illinois on Jan. 29-Feb. 1 and Feb. 5-7 before retreating to Europe once again.
Appearances with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Orchestre de Paris occupy most of spring 2026, before his last scheduled shows on his website show him appearing with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra in Copenhagen on May 14-15.
Salonen's website will be updated with additional dates as more productions are announced.

'If you weren't you, I never would've killed Ryan!' he yelled at his dad. During one last tête-à-tête, Dexter finally told Harrison the truth about Rita, prompting Alcott to fight back tears and let his demeanor soften, as the two men admitted that their connection was all they had. Harrison may not be like his pops, but having such a solid young talent like Alcott on board, one who can hold his own alongside a powerhouse like Michael C. Hall, has made this Resurrection something to wake the dead for. But in the TNT spinoff's 11th episode, Charlie (Jessica Green) accused Vikram of being 'motherly' as of late, and that set the stage for McGowan's most dialed-in, emotional work yet. Vikram explained to Charlie that upon first arriving in our here and now, he'd written off the situation as 'a temporary stop on the way back home to my own time,' and as such it 'never felt real to me at all.' But having now spent quality time with Charlie & Co., he feels a bond — and a need to keep everyone safe. McGowan lowered every one of Vik's walls, inviting Charlie and us in as he admitted, 'I've lost so much, and I cannot bear the thought of losing any one of you now.' — Matt Webb Mitovich HONORABLE MENTION: Cynthia Nixon Desperate to feel close to her late ex-husband, Ada began visiting a psychic medium this season, an arc that was mostly played for laughs. Watching the joy slowly disappear from her face, giving way to the anger, heartbreak and sheer disbelief of the situation, was simply heartbreaking. Cynthia Nixon brought that same powerful energy into her next scene with sister Agnes, during which she released another devastating wave of emotions as she (almost deliriously) celebrated a newfound closeness she feels to Luke, despite her medium's duplicity. You Should Get All Those Switch 2 Accessories Now Before They Get Even More Expensive
The situation surrounding Trump tariffs hasn't eased its pressure on Nintendo. Even as the Switch 2 has become one of the fastest-selling consoles ever, the Mario maker said that select Switch 2 accessories may see price 'adjustments' starting Aug 3. Not only that, but the original Switch and Switch OLED could cost more going forward. I guess we shouldn't say we told you so, but even we didn't expect to witness original Switch models selling for $40 or $50 more than before. In a news post, Nintendo said U.S. customers can expect certain accessories, select amiibo, and the cute Alarmo bedside clock to all get more expensive in the next few days. After Nintendo fully revealed the Switch 2 in May, the company delayed preorders for North American customers and blamed the wide-reaching tariffs for the issue. While the console maker decided not to hike Switch 2 prices, it raised prices on the Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joy-Con 2 split controllers, and the official Switch 2 Camera peripheral by $5 each. We can expect some console extras to cost more, but we'll have to see which amiibos Nintendo decides to hike. We can assume the DK and young Pauline figurine for Donkey Kong Bananza is first in line. That's not much of a relief considering the company is already pushing some titles for $70 or as much as $80. If some gamers were already suffering consternation surrounding the Switch 2's $150 jump from the original Switch to the Switch 2, the divide is already starting to shrink. Digital deals hunter Wario64 spotted that Target had already increased prices for the 8-year-old console. A Switch Lite went from $200 to $220. The original Switch now costs $40 more at $340. The fan-favorite Switch OLED, which was priced at $350 on launch, now sells for $400. Alarmo will now cost $110, while prices on accessories, like the original Joy-Con charging stand, will go up by $5. The price hikes come on the heels of Nintendo declaring the Switch 2 had sold more than 6 million units globally in the first seven weeks after release—around July 24. The company said in its latest financial results that it sold nearly as many copies of Mario Kart World, though that includes the software downloads from the $500 Switch 2 and Mario Kart bundle. Nintendo didn't offer nearly as much data on its peripheral sales, though original Switch sales were already declining before the Switch 2 release. A more expensive console won't do Nintendo's older systems any favors. Either way, if you still had plans to grab a few Switch 2 accessories, you best do so now before they cost you even more.
