The most challenging emotion for any African international relations observer and ordinary person today is processing the current US administration's stance against South Africa, in particular, and Africa in general. The legacy of the US in Africa may be problematic and mostly detrimental to the African population. But Trump 1.0 and 2.0 have demonstrated shocking derisive contempt for the continent and its people.
Depending on which side of the debate one is on, the US could be the world's number one superpower or a rapidly declining one. The rise of a multipolar world and global pluralism, which recognises the emergence of other civilisations and nations, and their right to chart their foreign policies as long as they align and recognise the United Nations Charter, must be recognised.

Although the African continent bled its most important asset, its human resources, through the slave trade, and was later subjected to close to a century of colonialism, its contribution to human civilisation through intellectual production and culture, abundant natural resources and trade, and the struggle for independence, self determination and national sovereignty should never be taken for granted.
There is no doubt about the realisation and direction the continent needs to take, despite many national challenges. Africa is part of a fast-changing world order in which genuine friendships, partnerships and solidarity informed by empathetic historical understanding of its contradictions and choices could steer a robust path towards development.
The rise of China, the second-largest economy in the world, and a nucleus around which the multipolar world is emerging into a reality, attests to changing times attuned to genuine multilateralism. Africa-China cooperation, and growing ties among countries of the global south are producing irrefutable evidence of progressive socio-economic transformation in infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and industrial partnerships, which are unfortunately rattling other powers, instead of supporting such initiatives.
Increasingly, Africa and other countries in the global south are demanding an equal voice, responsible exercise of power and an equal share of economic prosperity in the interest of Africans and the whole human race. Despite resonant calls for commitment to multilateralism, a more participatory and equitable world order based on solidarity, international cooperation and mutually beneficial relations, respect for the national sovereignty and self-determination of other nations, the Trump Administration is rewriting history to the age of power is mighty, characterised by 'big brother mentality.'

There is no denying the power of partnerships, including bilateral relations with the US, but Africa needs genuine friendship and solidarity that is informed by, and shares common concerns with, the structural legacy of poverty and inequality induced by close to a century of colonial hegemony.
To the extent that some of the African leaders have failed their nations, and indeed Africa, friends of the continent and its people should work positively with Africans, who have a better, deeper understanding of their conditions to improve national institutions, governance, and equip the young generation of leaders with proper skills to lead during increasingly complex fluid global context. Furthermore, they must closely collaborate with African countries, and together with much of the global south, to advocate for more equitable international relations, fostering mutually beneficial win-win relations among all nations.
While African countries and much of the global south are focused on improving socio-economic transformation at home, and multilateral relations that uplift many of us, Washington has chosen to go isolationist, seeking to 'Make America Great Again' (MAGA).
Since the Trump Administration assumed power, it has imposed economic tariffs, including on some of the weakest economies in Africa, unilaterally cut aid, walked away from multilateral commitments such as the Paris Agreement on climate change, and recently from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO is a specialised agency of the United Nations whose core mission is to build peace and security through international collaboration in education, science, culture, and communication.
A statement attributed to Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, says that the US withdrawal was anticipated, of course reflecting the general recognition that Washington is rolling back or out of major multilateral institutions. Azoulay profoundly noted that the decision to withdraw from UNESCO contradicts the fundamental principles of multilateralism.
While withdrawing from multilateral institutions may be a legitimate choice of the current US Administration and American voters, it is its external behaviour that is not only concerning, but also boggles the mind. Let's take the example of South Africa, a major continental economic and political hub, which now finds itself as a major target of the US republican government.
South Africa is a relatively stable multiracial democracy facing severe economic challenges, which, among many factors, largely accounts for its sluggish economic growth at an average of 1% in the past decade. A combination of growing violent crime, partly attributable to growing unemployment and a huge influx of economic and political migrants, has created major challenges for South Africa's Government of National Unity, under the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA), a party dominated by the minority white population.
US-South Africa relations are in jeopardy, but not because Pretoria has violated any of its domestic or international obligations. South Africa has consistently sought to exercise its foreign policy under its constitution and historical norms, in some cases to the consternation of US foreign policy, which tends to be oblivious of the human rights of its targets and the interests of the Global South.
South Africa assumed its continental and global prominence after probably experiencing the harshest apartheid policy suffered by any nation. Secondly, like many post-colonial African states, the exercise of its national sovereignty and self-determination was realised out of a painful liberation struggle by its oppressed population.
Yet, recently, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee voted 34-16 to send the ''U.S.-South Africa Bilateral Relations Review Act'' to the full House of Representatives. The bill seeks a review of U.S.-South Africa relations over objections to the latter's foreign policy, and imposition of sanctions on South African government and business officials.
The US is also snubbing the G20 under South Africa's Presidency, threatening the imposition of high tariffs, expelling Pretoria from AGOA, which, for all purposes, seems to have been overtaken by tariffs. The Trump Administration has also threatened to impose 100% tariffs on members of the BRICS, and to punish South Africa for its close relations with China, as well as its human rights advocacy on the Israeli war on Gaza.
Sanctions will complicate South Africa's future economic prospects. Perhaps this US administration has ushered in a critical juncture for African countries to stand together in unity. The global south must reinforce national and international solidarity, intensify calls for robust multilateralism based on the United Nations Charter.

Image: File Picture Political analysts warn that the ANC is unlikely to resolve its differences with the US over the impending 30% tariff on South African exports, as the party held its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Johannesburg at the weekend. The tariff is expected to take effect on August 7, as announced by the Trump administration on Thursday. South Africa is the only country from sub-Saharan Africa singled out in the announcement, reflecting the US's strained relationship with Pretoria. Other African nations, including Lesotho and Zimbabwe, have been hit with a 15% tariff, which will also come into effect in seven days. The decision is a huge blow to South Africa, as the US is its second-biggest trading partner and comes despite trying to agree a trade deal with the US, which included buying US liquefied natural gas, simplifying rules for poultry imports and investing in US industries like mining. Next Stay Close ✕ On Saturday, ANC NEC member Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa told journalists that there had been a focused discussion on the US tariffs, describing it as 'spirited and robust'. Ramokgopa said the negotiations between South Africa and the US were ongoing, adding that both countries would be able to find each other. However, political analyst Zakhele Ndlovu said although the NEC was expected to talk about the issue, there is not much that the ANC can do. He said Trump was not happy with many things including domestic and foreign policies. 'The ANC needs to figure out how to deal with generally hostile Republican administrations, and the Trump administration, in particular. Trump's beef with the ANC centres around domestic and foreign policies. On the domestic front, Trump is unhappy with the Expropriation bill, BEE and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). "On foreign policy, Trump is bitter about the decision to take Israel to the ICJ (International Court of Justice),'' Ndlovu said, adding that the time has come for the ANC to stop confusing its interests as the country's interests. 'I don't see the ANC coming up with any solution here. It is caught between a rock and a hard place,'' he said. US-South Africa relations have hit rock-bottom since Trump took office in January. The US President stopped all aid to South Africa, accusing it of discriminating against its white minority. South Africa has repeatedly denied this. Ramaphosa held talks with Trump in May in a bid to mend relations but this failed to make any headway. In July, the US House Foreign Affairs Committee passed a bill to review the US-South Africa relations due to objections over its foreign policy and potentially imposing sanctions on senior ANC leaders. The bill accuses the ANC of undermining US interests by maintaining close relationships with Russia and China, which are among its allies and trading partners. It also accuses South Africa of backing Palestinian militant group Hamas in its conflict in Gaza with Israel- an accusation South Africa has denied. Last week, Trump indicated he did not plan to attend the G20 summit taking place later this year in Johannesburg. Another political analyst, Ntsikelelo Breakfast, said the ANC is wasting time discussing the tariff imposed by the US, adding that there is nothing the party can do to avoid the situation. 'There is no way out here. The European Union (EU) signed for 15% this week, and who are we if the EU can give in. I thought we were able to convince Trump and his administration after the meeting in May but clearly Trump did not buy it and now there is legislation to sanction ANC leaders, said Breakfast, adding that this means Trump has taken a hard stance towards South Africa and the ANC. Breakfast said that Trump's threat to skip the G20 summit also cemented his position about South Africa, saying 'this is a smack in the face'. Political analyst Professor Sipho Seepe said the US's quarrel with South Africa goes beyond the alleged white genocide and that an appreciation of the basis of the quarrel would help in the crafting of an appropriate response. 'No amount of public relations exercise or photo opportunities that Ramaphosa loves so much will resolve South Africa's varied problems,' he said.

Swana highlighted the systemic challenges facing Black South Africans, particularly in light of the alarming rate of unemployment ravaging especially the African and 'Coloured' communities. 'The South African eco-system is anti-Black,' he stated, arguing that the macroeconomic policies of the elected government and the Government of National Unity (GNU) have perpetuated conditions ripe for despair. Swana's remarks underlined a broader societal malaise. 'Black men are being emasculated and incarcerated, and our youth are in a perpetual drug-induced stupor,' he said in calling for a radical re-examination of the support structures available for young Black men. 'We cannot outsource that to anyone else,' he firmly stated, advocating for a community-led approach to long-term viability and cultural integrity. Labour expert Michael Bagraim echoed similar sentiments, highlighting that South Africa has faced over three decades of diminishing returns in employment figures. 'Current policies are failing citizens miserably,' Bagraim asserted, pinpointing the last fifteen years as particularly detrimental, with many industries on the verge of collapse. Bagraim pushed for a fundamental rethink of these policies, proposing that a collaborative dialogue between government and business could reshape the current labour landscape. Drawing attention to the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac), he emphasised its capabilities in fostering discussions aimed at restructuring the labour legal framework: 'We already have a body that is set up especially for dialogue.' Pointing out the changing dynamics of the economic system, Bagraim also noted that proposed amendments to the Labour Relations Act and Basic Conditions of Employment Act could be pivotal for addressing regulatory burdens. 'We need to de-regulate the small business environment,' he said, arguing that job creation was heavily reliant on the burgeoning small business sector. As calls for deregulation and reduced government oversight intensify, Bagraim's conclusion stands stark: pursuing alternative community dialogues may merely waste time and resources, rather than bring tangible change. Image: Kola Sulaimon / AFP Gunmen kidnapped more than 50 people in northwest Nigeria in a mass abduction, according to a private conflict monitoring report created for the United Nations and seen by AFP on Sunday. "Armed bandits" targeted the village of Sabon Garin Damri in Zamfara state Friday, the report said, the latest attack in a region where residents in rural hinterlands have long suffered from gangs who kidnap for ransom, loot villages and demand taxes. The report said this was the first "mass capture" incident in the Bakura local government area this year, "the recent trend of mass captures in Zamfara has been concerning," noting "a shift in bandit strategy toward more large-scale attacks in northern Zamfara." A Zamfara police spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. Nigeria's "banditry" crisis originated in conflict over land and water rights between herders and farmers but has morphed into organised crime, with gangs preying on rural communities that have long had little or no government presence. The conflict is worsening a malnutrition crisis in the northwest as attacks drive people away from their farms, in a situation that has been complicated by climate change and western aid cuts. Last month, bandits in Zamfara killed 33 people they had kidnapped in February despite receiving a $33,700 (R594,000) ransom, while three babies died in captivity, officials and residents told AFP. Bandit-jihadist cooperation Since 2011, as arms trafficking increased and the wider Sahel fell into turmoil, organised armed gangs formed in northwest Nigeria, with cattle rustling and kidnapping becoming huge moneymakers in the largely impoverished countryside. Groups also levy taxes on farmers and artisanal miners. Violence has spread in recent years from the northwest into north-central Nigeria. While improved cooperation between the army and air force has aided the fight, analysts say, airstrikes have also killed hundreds of civilians over the years. Bandits, who are primarily motivated by money, have also increased their cooperation with Nigeria's jihadist groups, who are waging a separate, 16-year-old armed insurrection in the northeast. The recent emergence of the Lakurawa jihadist group in the northwest has worsened violence in the region. Governments of affected states have been forced to recruit anti-jihadist militias fighting the militants in the northeast to assist in countering the bandits. AFP
