A 20-year-old inmate, Elyazid A, nicknamed "the Joker" or "the Equaliser", chose a unique way to escape from a French prison- concealed in fellow inmate's laundry bag, who was being released.
The inmate serving several sentences escaped by hiding in the luggage of his inmate who complete his sentence, the Prison Service said in a statement to AFP. He "took advantage of the liberation of his fellow inmate to hide himself in his luggage and get out," the statement said.
However, the authorities re-apprehended him later in a village cellar last week, approximately 25km from Lyon-Corbas prison, according to Guardian News.
The prison staff failed to notice his absence for 24 hours. Reports indicate he escaped by hiding in a large plastic laundry bag filled with clothes, which his released cellmate transported out on a trolley on Friday. The police continue their search for the accomplice cellmate.
Multiple investigations have been launched by Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, Lyon prosecutors, the French prison service and Lyon-Corbas facility to examine the escape circumstances.

The national prison service head, Sébastien Cauwel, confirmed that Elyazid A, despite facing charges including criminal association and conspiracy to murder, was not considered a security threat. Cauwel described the escape method as exceptionally uncommon, attributing its success to significant internal failures.
The incident raised questions about systemic issues within the facility, primarily stemming from staff-related shortcomings rather than infrastructure problems.
The severe overcrowding exacerbates these challenges for prison officers.
Lyon-Corbas prison currently houses almost 1,220 inmates despite its 678-person capacity. A May report by the Lyon bar association urged immediate action to address overcrowding and maintain basic human rights.
The French prison system accommodates 85,000 inmates in facilities designed for under 63,000 people. Cauwel noted that vacant cells are immediately filled, potentially contributing to oversight failures.
According to a 2024 Council of Europe assessment, French prisons rank third in EU overcrowding rates, behind Cyprus and Romania. The country has witnessed numerous dramatic escapes, including about 20 helicopter breakouts since the 1980s, reported The Guardian.
The prison service faces a shortage of at least 5,000 officers. Recent incidents include armed attacks on prison facilities, with 21 arrests in April following assaults, including gunfire at Toulon prison's entrance.
Drug cartels have targeted prison facilities, damaging officers' housing and burning vehicles, responding to increased government enforcement and stricter regulations for imprisoned crime leaders.

Riyal-life trap: Bengaluru merchant loses Rs 4.5 lakh to currency-exchange fraudsters

Bengaluru: In a stunning drama involving foreign currency, an elderly woman seeking help and sympathy, and a shocking lapse of judgment, a 42-year-old cloth-seller walked into a trap stitched together by fraudsters and was defrauded of Rs 4.5 lakh in a currency exchange deal gone awry. According to his complaint with police, Zia-ul-Haq, a resident of Shivajinagar and from Assam, sells clothes by the roadside in Indiranagar. Late June, a woman met him on the pretext of purchasing clothes. During interaction, she asked him if he knew anyone who could exchange Saudi riyals for Indian currency. When Haq informed her Shivajinagar has a foreign currency exchange office, the woman took down his number and said an aged woman staying one floor above her house had a bundle of notes and sought help in conversion. Around 9pm the same day, Haq received a call from the woman, who handed the phone to her neighbour, said to be a pourakarmika. The elderly woman claimed she had stumbled upon a packet of 1,626 Saudi riyals with 50-riyal face value while clearing the road. She claimed she was a widow, her son was mentally ill, and her two daughters didn't have much knowledge about financial matters. Haq told TOI that he informed the woman the notes might be fake. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dolly Parton, 79, Takes off Her Makeup and Leaves Us Without Words The Noodle Box Undo But she forced him to verify a few notes at the currency-exchange desk. Initially, she offered to accompany the cloth vendor to the currency exchange shop, but beat a hasty retreat with the now-known ruse: "I'm busy with work, please help me." She pestered him with endless phone calls seeking help. "I agreed to buy the riyals for Rs 4.5 lakh. I borrowed money from my acquaintances and called the woman. She asked me to come over to her home. When I reached Nagawara bus stop on June 30, she insisted I meet her near the bus stop as a few persons fought near their house and one person was attacked with lethal weapons and police were at the spot. The woman who first visited him in Indiranagar came with a male friend. They said they would exchange the notes on the road. When I refused, they showed a bundle wrapped in cloth. Admittedly, I went completely blind for a few seconds, took the bundle without opening or examining it and handed them Rs 4.5 lakh as promised," Haq said. And the couple vanished out of sight in seconds. After returning home, Haq opened the bundle only to find newspaper cuttings. He called the woman's number, which was switched off. A senior police officer said Haq filed a complaint two weeks after the crime. A case of cheating has been registered, and efforts are on to nab them, he added.

SIT to probe illegal kidney racket

1 2 Namakkal/Trichy: A special investigation team (SIT) led by S Vineeth, project director of Tamil Nadu Health System Reform Programme (TNHSRP), has been set up to probe the illegal kidney sale racket in Namakkal. Official sources said the team will investigate transactions between donors, who allegedly sold their kidneys for financial gain, and the recipients, in addition to the role of private hospitals suspected of facilitating the process. The team carried out document verification at Tiruchengode revenue divisional officer's office on Tuesday. A team member said they will be conduct investigations in these areas for two days. Tiruchengode revenue divisional officer (RDO) Suganthi, Namakkal joint director Dr Rajmohan, Kumarapalayam taluk tahsildar Sivakumar and Pallipalayam police inspector Malarvizhi were present. Later in the evening, the SIT held an inquiry at a private hospital in Perambalur over allegations that surgeries were done there. "SIT chief S Vineeth is present along with other members, two joint directors of health services, and a deputy superintendent of police," a senior official told TOI, adding that the probe may continue through the night. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo The inquiry scheduled for Monday at the private college was called off midway following a review meeting in Namakkal during which the SIT was constituted. The probe also follows a series of statements circulating on social media from kidney donors. Earlier last week, private hospitals in Trichy and Erode came under the scanner. While the hospital in Trichy was served a notice, a hospital in Erode was barred from conducting surgeries until further notice. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, deputy leader of the opposition R B Udhayakumar criticised the state govt over the racket, while TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai called for strict action against those involved. Namakkal police are also on the lookout for the broker M Annandhan, against whom a case has been registered. This follows video clips of donors surfacing on social media along with reports that workers employed in power loom units and dyeing mills in Pallipalayam and nearby areas in Namakkal were being lured by brokers to sell their kidneys for Rs5–10 lakh. Though a few more hospitals in Trichy are being named, JD sources confirmed that the inquiry has not been extended beyond the one hospital as yet.

Truck with disaster: Violations surge 46%

New Delhi: In July, trucks have been involved in two major fatal accidents in south Delhi, highlighting the menace of heavy vehicles on the roads. According to Delhi Police data, so far this year, heavy vehicles were involved in 82 fatal accidents, causing 85 deaths and injuring 187 people. Last year, 87 fatal crashes ended up claiming 89 lives and injuring 205 persons in the corresponding period. The data shows that during this period, traffic violations by heavy vehicles increased by 46% from last year. While 17,776 challans were issued in the first six months of 2024, this year, 26,025 challans have already been issued. Violations of restriction of time (no entry) also surged notably, from 4,108 to 7,326. Jumping traffic signal, while showing a slight decline, remained high, with 1,766 cases in 2024 and 1,401 in 2025. The number of heavy vehicle drivers not using seat belts went up from 702 to 1,120, highlighting safety concerns. Vehicles operating without a pollution under control certificate (PUCC) were reported 686 times in 2024 and 914 this year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo Violations related to disobeying lawful directions went up steeply, from 118 to 415. Trucks carrying sand or dust without proper covering (no entry) almost doubled, rising from 157 to 295. Vehicles operating without fitness certification decreased slightly, from 92 to 81, the data showed. According to an officer, these violations mostly increase at night. Once the no-entry period ends, drivers of heavy vehicles tend to speed. Some also try to enter during no-entry hours, the officer said, adding that obstructive parking was another major problem, often causing snarls. A senior police officer said teams have been deployed at various locations to curb violations by heavy vehicles and enforce compliance. Rohit Baluja, president, Institute of Road Traffic Education, said heavy vehicles face a big challenge on Delhi roads, which are not engineered for mixed-traffic conditions, especially as two-wheelers wriggle their way in and around larger vehicles. Footpaths remain encroached upon by vendors, parked vehicles or other debris, forcing pedestrians to walk on the carriageway. Legislation also does not support heavy vehicles, he said. For instance, Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules demand that where bus lanes are segregated and marking on roads or streets have been provided, all buses and goods carriages plying during permitted hours will be confined to the bus lanes, and no other motor vehicle shall enter that space. When accidents occur, heavy vehicles are always labelled as accused, said Baluja. Anil Chhikara, a transport and vehicle expert, said the primary reason behind most of the fatalities involving heavy vehicles is excessive speed. According to him, the accidents could be significantly reduced if speed governor devices are installed and enforced in vehicles across the city. A speed governor, he explained, is a specialised piece of instrument designed to regulate and control the speed of an electric motor or engine, preventing vehicles from exceeding safe speed limits.
