Panic as passenger jet needs three attempts to land at Cristiano Ronaldo airport in high wind
Holidaymakers suffered a scary start to their vacation when their plane needed three attempts to land in high wind.
Plane spotter Oksana Starykova watched from near Madeira's airport and filmed the TAP Air Portugal jet do two go-arounds before safely landing on the third attempt.
Hair-raising footage showed the plane wobbling in the air while apparently being buffeted by strong winds. The pilot then aborted the landing and did a go-around for a second attempt.
Oksana looked anxious as the jet swayed in the wind and even crossed her fingers for luck as the plane came in to land for the third time.
She then cheered as the jet made a safe landing at the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport on the Portuguese island of Madeira on Sunday June 22.
The airport is named after the Portuguese footballer, who was born on the island.
Oksana, who lives in Madeira and works in tourism, told What's The Jam: 'Aviation is a real passion of mine, wherever I travel in the world, I always seek out the best plane spotting locations.
'Madeira's airport is particularly special for aviation enthusiasts due to its stunning location and challenging approach.

'I was there in 2022 and it was a bit creepy to land,' said Jonna.
Madeira is one of the most dangerous airports in the world, due to the fact it's built over the ocean and has very strong crosswinds.

Family of Greg Monks gather for funeral as mourners donate to children's charity
Greg Monks sadly died after he vanished hours into a stag do in the party resort of Albufeira in the Algarve. A funeral has taken place for a man who was found dead after going missing on a stag do in Portugal. Greg Monks, from Cambuslang, near Glasgow, vanished just hours into a stag do with his pals in the Algarve party resort of Albufeira. The 38-year-old had been missing for a week before Portuguese authorities discovered his body at the bottom of a ravine on Wednesday, June 4. Police believe Greg became lost while attempting to find his way back to his hotel and tragically fell to his death. His devastated family, including his mum, cousin and girlfriend Nicole, were forced to return home without his body as they waited for repatriation. His family and loved ones gathered at Daldowie Crematorium's West Chapel near Glasgow to say their goodbyes today. The service was also shown in the East Chapel and live-streamed online for those unable to attend in person. Mourners were asked to donate to children's charity Cash for Kids instead of bringing flowers. Those celebrating Greg's life spoke after the service. Sharon Cooke said: "A truly beautiful service, you did Greg proud. All the love in the world to you all." Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! His friends and family did him very proud. Rest in peace now Greg." On Monday evening before his funeral, loved ones gathered for an emotional balloon release at Fullarton Park in Glasgow. Attendees brought a blue balloon with a personal message to Greg. Greg's sister, Jillian Monks, previously spoke to the Daily Record about the agony of losing her brother – but said the family were grateful for some sense of closure. She said: "It has been the toughest time of our lives. We still can't believe what has happened. But we're glad we now have some sense of closure. I don't know if any of us could have coped with even another day searching for my brother. "We couldn't eat, we couldn't sleep. It was absolute torture. To know Greg has been found is a slight relief. We can now bring him home and give him the send-off he deserves." Greg had travelled to Albufeira for a five-day stag do, where he was due to be a groomsman. However, just hours into the trip he became separated from the group on the strip. The last sighting of him was captured in a quiet residential area around three miles from the main strip. Jillian has urged groups heading abroad to look after one another and stay together. She said: 'In places like Albufeira, everyone needs to stick together and look after each other. His pals are absolutely devastated at what happened. 'Before everyone left the hotel that night, Greg made sure they all had a business card and a map from the hotel to help them find their way home.' A fundraiser launched during the search – and later used to help with repatriation - has raised more than £34,000, showing just how loved Greg was by all who knew him.

Fighter jets scrambled to Brit TUI flight to Lanzarote after terrifying bomb threat note is found in toilet
Some passengers tried texting family to let them know about what was happening TUI TERROR PANIC Fighter jets scrambled to Brit TUI flight to Lanzarote after terrifying bomb threat note is found in toilet Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HOLIDAYMAKERS were left terrified after a bomb threat note was found on a Brit TUI flight from Cardiff to Lanzarote - forcing fighter jets to scramble. Cheryl Sainsbury, 43 and her pals, from Pontypridd, were all smiles en route to the Canaries - until the pilot made a chilling mid-air announcement. Cheryl said: "We were sort of looking at each other thinking 'what's he on about'? "We were all scared but there was no sense of panic as such on board. Everybody seemed to come together and just looked out for each other. We all wanted to make sure everyone was ok." Everyone was told to remain in their seats. The crew searched under the seats and in the overhead lockers to check that all the luggage was accounted for. Cheryl said: "I think they were looking for a black rucksack." Passengers reportedly tried to message loved ones to tell them what was happening as they anxiously waited for updates from the cabin crew. The group initially thought someone had phoned in a bomb threat - only later did they learn a handwritten note was found by a crew member in one of the aircraft's toilets. The pilot then announced a risk assessment had been done and the threat was deemed low, meaning the plane would no longer be landing earlier in Portugal. But for everyone's safety, two Portuguese fighter jets escorted the plane to its destination of Arrecife in Lanzarote. 6 The plane safely landed in Cesar Manrique airport in Lanzarote Credit: Alamy 6 Lanzarote is a popular holiday destination for Brits Credit: Getty Harrowing moment plane comes terrifyingly close to helicopter as it takes off at airport Cheryl said: "Once we landed on the ground, it was the biggest celebration and sense of relief. "We were taken to a remote part of the airport and there were police and fire engines surrounding the plane. We had to get off one-by-one." The group then had to wait for the emergency services on the ground to check through the luggage before they were allowed to leave. Cheryl explained: "We had to stand on the tarmac with all the luggage but we weren't allowed to touch of any of it. "They brought sniffer dogs and the bomb squad so we just had to stand their and watch before they let us on the bus. "We got taken to some form of compound where there were no refreshments and just one toilet. "We just had to wait their until they had approval from the police to let us go to get back to the normal part of the airport where we could go through immigration and collect our cases." The friends are now unwinding in Lanzarote with a drink or two to help 'settle their nerves' after the ordeal. They are due to fly back home on Sunday - and are hoping that flight will be less eventful. Cheryl said: "It was such a weird experience especially as I'm a quite anxious flyer so I don't know how we did it. Even though we were all scared, we just stuck together and tried to keep it calm." She added that the cabin crew from TUI remained calm and were "brilliant" with all the passengers. Specialists from the GEDEX (Explosives Deactivation Group), the Fiscal and Border Section, investigation units and citizen security patrols all intervened, as reported by The Sun on Thursday. The inspection found no explosive device on board. Flight BY6422 landed at Lanzarote airport at around 10.55am on Thursday. A spokesperson for Cardiff Airport said: 'We are aware of an incident involving flight TOM6422 from Cardiff to Lanzarote on 19/06/25. "The safety of our passengers is our number one priority. No concerns or suspicious activity were raised prior to departure.' Spain's Civil Guard has launched an investigation to determine who wrote the note. The force stressed that this type of act is a serious crime, as it causes alarm, compromises public safety and forces specialised resources to be used. TUI has been contacted for comment.
