Sudan mediators urge rivals to ease worsening aid crisis
Sudan is in the grip of a worsening humanitarian crisis with ever more people facing 'severe malnutrition and famine', a group of peace brokers including the UAE has warned. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the US and Switzerland said the Sudanese people's needs were reaching 'critical levels'. They made seven demands to the combatants in Sudan's civil war – the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces – to help ease the crisis. The demands include keeping key routes open for aid convoys, such as roads to the stricken Darfur region where prosecutors in The Hague have alleged war crimes. The rival powers are urged to 'lift all bureaucratic impediments' affecting aid. The two warring sides are told to 'ensure safe passage for civilians to access assistance', and guarantee that aid workers will not face retaliation if they lend assistance in areas held by their rivals. They should also 'allow and facilitate a sustained UN humanitarian presence', particularly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions, restore communications across Sudan, and 'ensure the protection of critical civilian infrastructure' such as energy and water, the countries said. The civil war in Sudan has been raging since April 2023. In recent months the country has found itself effectively divided between two rival governments after the RSF established an administration in areas under its control. Army chief Gen Abdel Fattah Al Burhan moved this week to place allied fighters under the military's control. The UAE and its four partners, along with the UN and African Union, have acted as go-betweens in the conflict. After talks in Geneva last year they named themselves the Aligned for Advancing Lifesaving and Peace in Sudan (Alps) Group – a nod to the Swiss hosts. They called on fighters to abide by commitments they made in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 2023 to protect Sudan's people. The combatants had pledged to avoid attacks on civilians and allow them to leave besieged areas. 'The Alps coalition is appalled by the continuous deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Sudan, including the growing number of people in situations of severe malnutrition and famine,' the countries said on Wednesday. 'Civilians continue to pay the highest price for this war. With the situation in Sudan worsening and humanitarian needs reaching critical levels, urgent action is needed by the conflict parties to protect civilians and allow and facilitate humanitarian access to those in need.'

Tanzania Launches its First National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security
In a significant step towards advancing gender equality and reinforcing national peacebuilding efforts, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, in collaboration with UN Women and national stakeholders, officially launched its first National Action Plan (TNAP) on Women, Peace and Security on 19 August 2025 at the Peace and Security Training Centre in Dar es Salaam. Rooted in the global commitments of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, the four-year TNAP provides a strategic framework to ensure women's full, equal and meaningful participation in peace processes, conflict prevention, humanitarian response and post-conflict recovery. 'Today we celebrate a critical step forward,' said Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, who officiated the event. 'This National Action Plan represents a new chapter for our country, one that reinforces our commitment to the rights of women and the building of a peaceful and inclusive society. I am pleased to see this plan grounded in our own Constitution and informed by global commitments. Let it be a tool not only for change, but for unity and resilience across our regions and communities.' Led by the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups and the Zanzibar Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Elders and Children, the development of the TNAP involved extensive consultations with government ministries, civil society, women's organizations and international partners, ensuring alignment with other national frameworks including the National Plan of Action to End Violence against Women and Children (NPA-VAWC) and the Tanzania Generation Equality Programme (TGEP). It prioritizes five pillars: participation, protection, prevention, relief and recovery, and coordination. 'The goal of this Action Plan,' said Hon. Dr. Dorothy Gwajima, Minister of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups,'is to recognize the vital role of women in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and decision-making processes. It marks the culmination of years of collaboration, research and coordination between our ministries, civil society, and international partners. A blueprint for inclusive, people-driven peace and gender equality The launch was also addressed by the UN Resident Coordinator, Susan Ngongi Namondo, who underscored that la sting peace is only possible when women are not just participants, but leaders in shaping it. UN Women's Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa applauded Tanzania's leadership, stating that the landmark instrument stands as a powerful testament to Tanzania's firm commitment to place women at the heart of peace and security: "not as victims, not as spectators, but as leaders and drivers of transformative change.' 'From the grassroots to the highest levels of government, Tanzanian women have demonstrated that when women lead, peace follows. UN Women is proud to stand with the Government of Tanzania on this journey to ensure TNAP delivers tangible and lasting impact.' Next steps With the launch of TNAP, Tanzania joins a growing community of nations operationalizing the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is taking a leadership role at the upcoming Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM16) in Busan, South Korea, bringing governments, international organizations and industry together to accelerate global access to clean cooking. The initiative underscores Washington's commitment to advancing reliable, affordable, and healthy energy solutions worldwide, with U.S.–Africa cooperation being particularly critical to expanding clean cooking access and infrastructure across the continent. While more than one billion people have gained access to clean cooking in recent years – largely through adoption of LPG – nearly two billion people still rely on polluting fuels, with Africa representing a significant share of those affected. The African Energy Chamber (AEC) has emphasized that access to clean cooking in Africa is not just an energy challenge, but a critical development issue affecting health, economic opportunity and dignity, particularly for women and children. Expanding reliable, affordable LPG solutions across the continent requires robust infrastructure and strong collaboration with international partners, including the U.S. At CEM16, the U.S. DOE will spotlight the urgency of closing this gap, calling for strategies and investment to scale up clean cooking fuels and infrastructure and seeking to work with new partners and stakeholders to mobilize financing, deploy proven technologies and accelerate progress toward universal clean cooking access. The U.S. and African nations are working together to scale up clean cooking fuels and deploy the infrastructure necessary to reach every household, with LPG recognized as a practical, reliable and scalable solution.
