Ericsson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Cisco ink pacts with BSNL to train students in 5G, IoT, AI/ML

on Monday signed separate Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) with the Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT), Jabalpur, to train engineering students in next-generation technologies, including
5G
and the
Internet of Things
(IoT).
BRBRAITT is an apex-level training institute under the state-controlled telecom carrier
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
(
BSNL
).
The organisations signed the pacts in the presence of Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Secretary Neeraj Mittal, senior officials from the DoT, BSNL, and representatives from the vendor companies.
This development is a step towards a broader plan by the telecom department to establish a Telecom Innovation, Research and Training Centre (TIRTC) at BRBRAITT. The industry-led TIRTC will focus on developing telecom-specific research and development talent and a future-ready workforce. It will also support product innovation, prototyping, and telecom entrepreneurship in the long term.
'In a landmark step for youth empowerment and skill development, @BSNLCorporate has signed MoUs with @EricssonIndia, @QCOMResearch, @cisco_in & @NokiaIndia to train the youth in 5G, AI/ML, networking & more, empowering them to drive India's digital transformation and Aatmanirbhar Bharat,' Scindia said in a tweet on X (formely Twitter Corp).
'Advanced training programmes at BSNL's apex institute — Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training, Jabalpur, will shape world-class professionals and accelerate our connected, tech-driven future,' the union minister said.
Ericsson, in its statement, said that as part of this partnership, engineering students will be trained annually through face-to-face, instructor-led sessions at the Ericsson 5G Center of Excellence hosted at BRBRAITT, adding that nearly 2,200 students will gain access to face-to-face as well as self-paced online Ericsson Educate modules covering the essentials of 5G and IoT through this program.
The training curriculum will include both theory and practical sessions covering 5G architecture, key use cases, and hands-on exposure to 5G equipment. These programs are aimed at engineering students from the third and fourth years, particularly those specialising in information technology, electronics & communication, and computer science.
'At Ericsson, we are deeply committed to India's digital growth journey. This collaboration is a step forward in building a future-ready talent pool that can innovate, design, and lead in new-age technologies like 5G and IoT,' said Nitin Bansal, managing director (MD), Ericsson India.
Nokia India will support the creation of a 5G Centre of Excellence and AI/ML Lab at BRBRAITT. The programme will train 300 students annually in 5G radio, core networks, and AI/ML applications. It includes a joint certification programme by Nokia and BRBRAITT, with support from the Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC).
Qualcomm, in turn, will set up a Qualcomm Institute at BRBRAITT, focusing on advanced 5G and AI training for students, BSNL trainers, and government stakeholders. The programme will include premium online content, live sessions, and internships. The American chipmaker will sponsor training for the first 100 participants in the inaugural year.
Cisco will leverage its Cisco Networking Academy Program to enhance skills in networking, cybersecurity, and IT infrastructure. It will provide free access to online curriculum and digital tools, while BSNL will coordinate implementation across non-profit educational institutions nationwide, promoting equitable access to digital learning.

Knight's interest in Druker's vision began in August 2022, when he called Druker during his anniversary trip in May 2025, Knight confirmed the $2 billion donation to Druker over a call at Druker's Portland home. Druker said, 'What do you say when somebody says they want to give you $2 billion?' Phil Knight and Druker were first introduced almost 20 years ago by lawyer Brian Booth, as stated in the first collaboration brought $100 million to the cancer institute in 2008, which was renamed the Knight Cancer Institute. A later proposal led to a $500 million gift, matched by others to make $1 billion for the institute in 2015. The Knights' total donations to Oregon universities, including OHSU and University of Oregon, likely exceed $4 billion, as per the Wall Street Journal new gift will improve the patient experience, offering a one-stop place for treatment, testing, and support. The Knight Cancer Institute will now operate more independently under a new entity called Knight Cancer Group, with Druker as had resigned as CEO in December due to organizational concerns but returned because of the Knights' donation opportunity. Phil Knight, now 87, grew up in Portland, ran track at University of Oregon, and co-founded Nike with Bill Bowerman in the 1960s, as mentioned in the report by Wall Street turned Nike into the world's leading sportswear company, and remains its largest shareholder and chairman emeritus. His estimated net worth is $35 billion, and he has given large amounts to the University of Oregon, including athletic facilities and scientific donations to academics far exceed those to athletics. India underlines ‘substantive agenda' to mend strained ties with US over tariffs, Russia oil
At a time when India's ties with the US are strained over tariffs and energy imports from Russia, Delhi on Thursday underlined focus on the 'substantive agenda' between the two countries — an American defence policy team in Delhi, joint military exercises in Alaska and 2+2 meeting of the defence and foreign ministry officials later this month. This is to assuage concerns that India is gravitating towards the non-western partners — External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is headed to Moscow and Chinese Foreign minister Wang Yi is likely to come to India next week, and NSA Ajit Doval was in Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to travel to Tianjin in China for the SCO leaders' summit on August 31-September 1. Responding to questions on the future of Indo-US relations on Thursday, Ministry of External Affairs' official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: 'India and the United States share a comprehensive global strategic partnership anchored in shared interests, democratic values, and robust people-to-people ties.' 'This partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges,' he said, alluding to the challenges posed by US President Donald Trump's imposition of 50% tariffs on India — 25% because of high tariffs and 25% for buying Russian energy. 'We remain focused on the substantive agenda that our two countries have committed to and we hope that the relationship will continue to move forward based on mutual respect and shared interests,' he said. The MEA spokesperson said, 'The India–U.S. defence partnership, underpinned by foundational defence agreements, is an important pillar of the bilateral partnership. This robust cooperation has strengthened across all domains… We are expecting a U.S. Defence Policy Team to be in Delhi in mid-August. The 21st edition of the joint military exercise — Yudh Abhyas — is also expected to take place later this month in Alaska. Both sides remain engaged to convene the 2+2 Intersessional meeting at the working-level towards the end of the month.' It is not usual to give out such details of upcoming activities, especially in the defence and strategic sectors, in advance. This announcement is significant since it gives out the message that India is not closing its doors of engagement with Washington DC. This comes at a time when preparations are underway to schedule a visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US in the last week of September. The MEA spokesperson, when asked, said that no decision has been taken yet on the PM's visit. Sources said that the ostensible reason is to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York, but a key objective will be to meet US President Donald Trump, iron out the issues on trade and arrive at a common ground on tariffs. This will also give an opportunity for the two leaders to announce a trade deal. However, for this to fructify, a lot of moving parts and a series of things have to fall in place. There has to be movement on two fronts — the Russia-Ukraine war and the Indo-US trade deal. Negotiations are underway on both fronts and Delhi is closely following the meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15 to discuss a resolution to the war in Ukraine. Modi has already spoken to Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the last few days. A resolution to the conflict is in India's interest, sources said, and it has been conveyed to both leaders. On the trade deal front, Indian and American negotiators had been close to sealing a deal, but the US President was not happy about the deal that was agreed between the interlocutors. So, the negotiators have to discuss the terms of the deal further, and they have to offer new terms, as red lines have been drawn. But the two sides are focused on the new goal for bilateral trade – 'Mission 500' – aiming to more than double total bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Now, to schedule the visit, as a first step, the Indian side has reached out to the UN headquarters for a speaking slot for the Prime Minister at the UN General Assembly, and, as of now, that has been scheduled on September 26 morning. Trump is slated to speak on September 23. Now, if the PM's visit takes place, it will give an opportunity to speak at the UNGA and then hold a bilateral meeting with Trump and other world leaders.
