Couture Now: 4 Takeaways From Paris That Show Where Fashion Is Headed

Organized by the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM), Paris Couture Week unfolded from July 7 to 10, turning the city of light, once again, into a stage for fashion's highest art form.
Haute couture goes beyond the beauty of clothes; it represents craftsmanship at its best, merging technical mastery with imagination. According to Valuates Reports, the haute couture market, a niche segment of the luxury fashion industry, is valued at approximately $12.3 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $14.4 billion by 2031, with a 2.3% CAGR. Though it represents only a small fraction of the overall luxury market, haute couture plays a crucial role in shaping a fashion house's brand image and establishing its prestige.
Each piece on the catwalk is the result of hours of work by many ateliers dedicated to every last detail. Speaking backstage to Johan Hellstrom from Björn Axén—who led the hair team for Stephane Rolland—he tells me that couture is the highest art of seamstressing and that it provides endless possibilities of creating magic, as so many people work on one dress.

A Return of Elegance: Chanel, Elie Saab, Armani Privé
Chanel's design studio created the couture collection this season, as the Maison awaits Matthieu Blazy to begin his role as creative director. The collection was nostalgic and quintessentially Chanel, with a focus on archival pieces and silhouettes featuring tweed and contrasting delicate fabrics. Held in the Salon d'Honneur at the Grand Palais, the Chanel Autumn/Winter 2025 haute couture show was staged to look like the legendary 31 Rue Cambon in Paris.

Elie Saab's show, as usual, was on point, showcasing spectacular, timeless red-carpet-style gowns which were opulent and glamorous in equal measure. Talking to fashion historian and writer Robert Ossant after the show, he described Saab's approach to embellishment as maximalist—haute couture at its most excessive and opulent. 'This is jewellery for the body,' he said. 'Saab's ateliers can hand-apply up to 20,000 beads, sequins and crystals over three months to complete a single dress.'
Armani Privé was a classically elegant presentation that was equally glamorous and included trouser suits, elongated shapes, and Art Deco motifs throughout, mostly in black and white.

Heritage Reimagined: Balenciaga, Schiaparelli
Balenciaga's show was a milestone in fashion history, as it was Demna's final event as creative director at the house after ten years, before heading to Gucci and handing over to Pierpaolo Piccioli. The Georgian designer referenced Cristóbal Balenciaga's sculptural codes in a very modern presentation, which included exaggerated collars and oversized suits. The show took place at Cristóbal Balenciaga's former apartment. Kim Kardashian was on the runway in a white dress, referencing Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and wearing Taylor's actual diamonds. Isabelle Huppert and Eva Herzigova were also among the models.

At Schiaparelli's presentation, Daniel Roseberry channelled the brand's trademark surrealism with a refined elegance that was especially sophisticated. Some floor-length red dresses stole the show, with unexpected detailing that turned them into pieces of art.
Classic Innovation: Stéphane Rolland

Stéphane Rolland's couture presentation set the bar exceptionally high this season with a show inspired by Ravel's Bolero. After the show, which took place at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Rolland told me that Ravel is one of his favorite composers of all time, and that it was a big responsibility to create a collection inspired by his work. 'When you admire someone like him so much, it's super difficult… but we produced a good show, so we are happy today,' he said. The presentation included black, red and metallic pieces with jewelry that were incorporated into the hair. Head of hair Johan Hellstrom told me that they had discussed the looks in great detail and that Rolland saw the hair as an extension of the clothing.
Robert Ossant described it as a collection dedicated to purity: purity of colour and craft. A sleek red gown with a ballooning mermaid skirt was delicately dusted with tonal crystals at the seams, waist and cuffs. The effect was a subtle shift in the way light moved across the dress, drawing attention to its sculptural structure. The finale piece was a stunning white strapless dress with an extended back that was covered in gold.
Redefining Couture: Robert Wun, Yuima Nakazato, Kevin Germanier.

In a departure from the classic approach to couture, a younger generation of designers, such as Robert Wun, is experimenting with it and challenging couture with its unapologetically bold style. In his press release, Wun stated that for several seasons, he had been creating "fragile armour" and introduced ceramic masks. 'In a world saturated with facial recognition and AI image generation, exposing the face, which conveys a wealth of information, creates a sense of profound vulnerability. Consequently, in contemporary society, concealing one's face serves as a potent form of protection,' he says. The show opened with a shocking bloodstained duvet wrapped around a model's shoulders. But, as explained by Ossant, true to Wun's vision, the blood wasn't printed or painted: it was embroidered.
For Yuima Nakazato, in addition, the focus is on sustainable and bio-engineered textiles. His latest collection was visionary and showcased deconstructed shapes and futuristic ensembles. Ritual and performance were central to the show, but never at the expense of the couture. 'Each piece was a masterclass in garment construction, innovation and material selection,' says Ossant.

Discussing the future of Haute Couture with Ossant, he tells me that the inclusion of Kevin Germanier on the calendar signals evolution and potential transformation. Known for upcycling and reusing existing textiles, he challenges the idea that couture must always begin with something new. By working with deadstock and discarded materials, he gives waste a second life and offers a bold new direction for the industry. Ossant adds that by inviting Germanier to present, the Syndicale de la Haute Couture is signalling its openness to change.

Despite the many changes we've recently seen in the fashion industry and the financial challenges it faces, couture remains strong. It's the perfect opportunity for luxury brands to showcase their talent, and as Hellstrom so beautifully puts it, haute couture is the dream. Designers will always create very special clothes for very special occasions, and couture week is an opportunity for fashion houses to present what they can dream of and do. As fashion slows down and we return to a time of reflection and appreciation of all things well-made, now more than ever, in all its guises, couture is here to stay.

As Lourdes has come into her own, she's shown the world that she's ready to introduce herself and pave her own path separate from her iconic mom's towering career. And while Lourdes has already cultivated a rich, eclectic career in modeling, there are still moments where we can't help but see the spitting image of her mother. Madonna's VMAs Looks Over the Years: Photos

Since Madonna came onto the scene in the 1980s, people haven't been able to take their eyes off of her. Whether you love her or hate her, Madonna always steals the spotlight. Even if you're not her biggest fan, you have to admit that her fashion sense is otherworldly, something that really broke barriers in previous decades (and caused a lot of controversies recently!) There's one thing everyone can admit about Madonna: she is the Queen of the MTV VMAs and always has been. Ever since her first VMAs in the early 1980s, people always want to know what the 'Material Girl' singer is going to rock next. From dramatic period gowns to barely-there outfits, Madonna knows how to keep her audience on their toes. And she's no stranger to a great costume change. More often than you'd think, she'd arrive at the VMAs in a simple, elegant fit and then come out to perform in a sexy outfit that knocked our socks off. (We have an obsession with her flapper outfit, it's not talked about enough and her legendary wedding dress look!) In honor of her birthday today on Aug 16, let's take a look back at some of Madonna's most iconic fashion moments from the VMAs. More from SheKnows The Best Photos of Madonna & Lookalike Daughter Lourdes Through The Years Best of SheKnows The Best Photos of Madonna & Lookalike Daughter Lourdes Through The Years 22 Famous Women Who Have Played Roxie in Chicago on Broadway 13 Famous Women You Totally Forgot Elvis Dated Iconic Wedding Dress (1984) When you think about Madonna, you probably think about her iconic wedding dress outfit from the 1984 MTV VMAs. She arrived in a white wedding dress with white heart decals on the skirt, statement jewelry, lace corset and a chunky, metallic belt reading 'Boy Toy.' Legend in the Making (1984) Despite having a wardrobe malfunction on stage, her 1984 wedding dress-clad performance sealed her fate as a legendary pop star. Sexy for 'Express Yourself' (1989) All eyes were on Madonna when she debuted her hit song 'Express Yourself' at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. For the momentous occasion, she wore an eye-catching black bustier and matching pants, a magnifying glass necklace, and grown-out curls Madonna as Marie Antoinette (1990) Who could forget when Madonna dressed as Marie Antoinette for her performance for the song 'Vogue.' According to a TODAY interview with the costume designer Marlene Stewart, she said Madonna played a huge role in creating the outfit. 'We know historically that the French were the biggest posers, and it's the whole idea of voguing and posing. It was the perfect transition. I suggested this French court situation with Marie Antoinette. It's really one of the origins, right? All they did was, 'Strike a pose.'' Cabaret Crooner (1993) Also in the 1993 MTV VMAs, Madonna switched it up with a cabaret-style look and show. She arrived on stage with a sleek white button-down, cummerbund, and a black suit jacket. Madonna Girly Show Tour (1993) Seriously, another shot of this memorable look from Madonna's Girly Show Tour. We're in love! Flapper Look (1994) Madonna decided to shake things up with a gorgeous flapper look that needs to be talked about more. For the 1994 VMAs, she donned a seafoam green dress, dark smoky eyes, and vampy nail polish. We're obsessed. Simple Black Dress (1994) However, Madonna switched up her flapper attire for a simple sheath black gown to present the award for 'Video of the Year.' Button Down Blue (1996) At the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards, Madonna combined masculine and sexy all in one beautiful outfit, opting for a silk blue top, updo hairstyle, and exposing her black bra. Darker & More Spiritual Attire (1998) Then in 1998, Madonna went through a spiritual change, and her outfits really reflected it. Her outfit for the awards ceremony was a bit darker than her last looks: dark hair, gold jewelry, henna tattoos, and a black Indian sari during 'Shanti/Ashtangi.' Back to Blonde (1999) While Madonna went back to her iconic blonde locks, she kept the darker attire for her performance at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards. Red Western Wear (2000) In 2000, it was two years since Madonna performed at the MTV Awards, and she brought there all with both her performance and wardrobe. She wowed everyone when she came out in this vibrant red, bedazzled two-piece that's giving us Western vibes. Simple LBD (2003) Before the iconic kissing fiasco that rocked the world in 2003, Madonna arrived to the VMA's in a rather simple, yet sexy black ensemble. Callback to 1984 (2003) This performance will never leave our mind. While Madonna arrived in a simple LBD, she changed it up drastically with all-black thigh-high leather boots, leggings, a long suit jacket, and a top hat. Iconic Purple Look (2005) This daring ensemble of a purple bomber jacket, tights, and oversized sunnies became Madonna's go-to look while promoting her album Confessions on a Dance Floor. And she, of course, rocked it at the 2005 MTV Europe Music Awards. She gave a tribute to Aretha Franklin and presented the Video of the Year award to Camila Cabello for 'Havana.' Leather Surprise (2021) Madonna shocked everyone when she made a surprise appearance at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards, rocking a sexy leather look that calls back to her early music career. I Have to Know the Nail Budget for Cardi B's New Music Video Immediately

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. I don't think anyone works harder than Cardi B's nail tech. The rapper just released the music video for her newest single, "Imaginary Playerz," on Aug. 15, and I'm fully in awe of just how many stunning nail looks she was able to fit into three-and-a-half minutes. The video itself features exactly what I've come to expect from Cardi B these days, which is a ton of stunning imagery of her sailing on a yacht, flying on a private jet, and in general, just living a life of luxury. While it's pretty obvious that everything about the visual was expensive, I'm more focused on what the glam budget was. The morning after the video dropped, Cardi's longtime nail tech, Coca Michelle, took to her Instagram Story to share a handful of behind-the-scenes videos and close-up photos of several of the manicures that the rapper wore in the video. One of the looks featured short, square-shaped nails that were painted with a black base and had emerald-cut gems glued to the top. In another slide, Michelle shared a collage of two other nail looks. One was a medium-length almond manicure with a black base and white polka dots that were accented with what appears to be the Chanel logo. Another featured a photo of long, black stiletto nails with two curved white lines drawn across the middle of each nail. Judging by the photo, it's safe to assume that most of the looks were pre-painted by Michelle onto a set of tips before being applied when it was time to shoot. But, of course, that's not where things stop. In another slide, Cardi is seen wearing a long, oval look that features teal nail polish with "melted gold" borders. The melted gold looks like it was achieved with 3D gel that was applied to the borders of the nails before they were either painted with a metallic gold polish or dipped in gold chrome powder. Either way, it looks both stunning and expensive. Michelle shared a handful of other behind-the-scenes pics from the video, and to my surprise, some of the looks shown were outfits and glam that Cardi happened to also be wearing during her many appearances at Paris Couture Week last month. Let's face it, Cardi B's nail looks will always be one-of-a-kind, but if you want to achieve at least somewhat similar that you can wear at home, shop a few must-haves ahead.
