Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council announces release of over 31,000 under general amnesty
In a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), the judiciary revealed new figures related to the application of the amended General Amnesty Law No. 27 of 2016, a piece of legislation that was initially enacted as a measure for national reconciliation and addressing the grievances of individuals detained on certain charges.
The statement also provided a broader scope of the law's impact, noting that the total number of individuals covered by its provisions—including those with outstanding arrest warrants, those on bail, and those sentenced in absentia—amounts to 128,936 people.
In a significant financial outcome, the report highlighted that the total amount of money recovered through the law's implementation reached 27,808,576,458 Iraqi Dinars. This statistic underscores the dual effect of the law, which not only facilitates prisoner releases but also plays a role in the recovery of public funds.

CBI fines banks $47M in H1 2025
Shafaq News – Baghdad The Central Bank of Iraq (CBI) imposed more than IQD 66.2B ($47.3M) in fines on banks and non-bank financial institutions in the first half of 2025, marking a steep drop from the same period last year. According to official data covering January through June, the penalties targeted violations by lenders and currency exchange firms, and were accompanied by 77 administrative measures ranging from warnings to grace periods. In H1 2024, fines reached IQD 181.8B ($130M) with 151 administrative actions. No list of penalized institutions was released. Iraq currently has 51 privately owned banks, split between 23 commercial and 28 Islamic lenders. Tighter compliance scrutiny has contributed to the drop in fines—in February, the CBI barred five additional banks from US dollar transactions after consultations with the US Treasury, expanding earlier restrictions on eight institutions. These steps are aimed at "curbing money laundering and illicit dollar flows"—persistent issues in Iraq's financial system. Joint enforcement by Iraqi and US regulators has also targeted schemes involving prepaid cards, a method armed groups and intermediaries allegedly used to smuggle dollars abroad for resale on the parallel market. Earlier reforms further tightened rules on dollar transfers after US-created wire systems were found to facilitate opaque transactions, some allegedly tied to sanctioned entities.

Kurdistan oil output tops 200K bpd after strikes
Shafaq News – Erbil Oil production in the Kurdistan Region has risen above 200,000 barrels per day (bpd) after repairs to facilities damaged in last month's drone strikes, the Eco Iraq Observatory revealed on Saturday. Output has resumed at the Sheikhan, Tawke, Peshkabir, Khurmala, and Sarsang fields following restoration work, though crude exports remain suspended amid a payment dispute between Erbil and Baghdad over dues owed to international oil companies. The observatory noted the deadlock could be resolved through a three-way meeting involving the Iraqi federal government, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), and the companies, or by Baghdad directly settling the firms' payments—an option it currently refuses. It warned that prolonging the standoff may prompt Baghdad to withhold public-sector salaries for KRG employees, condemning such action as 'unjust' and blaming parliament's 'failure' to pass a long-delayed national Oil and Gas Law. Eco Iraq previously documented a production collapse from 280,000 bpd to about 81,000 after a wave of explosive drone attacks between July 14 and 17, 2025, which struck facilities in Duhok and Erbil, causing severe damage and temporary shutdowns but no casualties. Although no group has claimed responsibility, local officials have pointed to Iran-aligned armed factions. Baghdad has also launched an investigation, urging the KRG to reinforce security for critical energy infrastructure.

Iraq denounces Israeli decision to occupy Gaza
Shafaq News – Baghdad On Friday, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced its firm rejection of Israel's plan to fully occupy the Gaza Strip. In a statement, the ministry described the move as an escalation and an extension of Israel's policy of starvation, displacement, and mass killing against innocent civilians in Gaza, 'acts that constitute war crimes and require international accountability." The ministry reaffirmed Iraq's unwavering support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. It also called on the international community to 'uphold its legal and humanitarian responsibilities and to immediately stop these violations.'
