Rory McIlroy skips £1.3m payday as LIV Golf star who ignored him boosts net worth

Daily Mirror05-05-2025

One rising star of the LIV Golf League continues to prove he was perhaps justified to ignore Rory McIlroy's advice in favour of featuring on the Saudi-funded series
Rising golf star Tom McKibbin is perhaps proving he was right to snub Rory McIlroy 's advice against joining LIV Golf. Despite a 47th-place finish in South Korea on Sunday, the Belfast-born prodigy pocketed another substantial sum for his efforts.
The 22-year-old carded a 74 in each of his first two rounds at LIV Golf Korea before an improved Sunday saw him finish on four over. That was far behind Bryson DeChambeau 's impressive 19-under victory, but he still took home a consolation prize to make most of his peers envious.

Belfast Live reported that out of 54 players, only seven ranked below McKibbin in Incheon. Yet he still walked away from the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club £92,250 richer, highlighting the lucrative allure that likely enticed him away from the DP World Tour in the first place.

Masters champion McIlroy, 35, advised his Northern Irish compatriot against joining the controversial LIV series. But even the PGA Tour advocate would likely admit he can see why certain colleagues would be tempted to LIV's shores given the grand gulf between earnings on offer.
"If I were in his position, I wouldn't make that decision," McIlroy had said back in January when McKibbin announced his move. The youngster defected to Saudi-funded LIV despite being on the cusp of his PGA Tour debut following his success on the European Tour.
Meanwhile, McIlroy took a break from competition and watched from the sidelines while Scottie Scheffler clinched a £1.3m win at the Byron Nelson in McKinney, Texas. McIlroy announced earlier in 2025 that he intended to play a relaxed schedule to spend more time with his family.
No1-ranked Scheffler finished 31-under across four rounds – eight ahead of runner-up Erik van Rooyen – to secure his first PGA Tour win of the year. In doing so, he matched the Tour's 72-hole scoring record, now shared with Justin Thomas and Ludvig Aberg.
Rasmus Hojgaard finished 48th at the Byron Nelson but pocketed just £20,800 for his troubles. That equates to less than a quarter of McKibbin's pay despite playing 33% more golf over the past weekend.

Some may still question the decision to represent the Saudi-funded series over golf's established Tours. However, the pay disparity illustrates what is driving those who have left – and continue to leave.
McKibbin also recently bagged £565,000 after Legion XIII triumphed in the team event at LIV Golf Mexico City in April. This meant he shared a £2.6m prize pot with team-mates Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton and Caleb Surratt.

This marks the second time this season that the former Belfast Royal Academy student has managed to grab a slice of the pie. Legion XIII kicked off the 2025 campaign in style by also winning the team event at the season-opening LIV Golf Riyadh in February.
To put these figures into greater context, McKibbin has now won approximately £3.3m from just seven tournaments playing for LIV. Meanwhile, he took home £2.5m from 72 competitions playing under the DP World Tour banner.
McIlroy is set to compete next at the Truist Championship, which will get underway at the Philadelphia Cricket Club on Thursday. The Grand Slam champion will be eyeing his slice of the £15m prize fund, with a whopping £2.7m earmarked for the winner.

Dustin Johnson's wife to inherit fortune and amazing boat from mega-rich dad

Dustin Johnson has made a fortune from his golf career, but his wife Paulina, is also set to inherit a significant sum from her NHL legend father Wayne Gretzky Former US Open champion Dustin Johnson has amassed a considerable fortune from his golfing career, but his wife is also set to inherit a hefty sum. Johnson, who once topped the world rankings, boasts two major championship victories, having clinched the US Open in 2016 and the Masters in 2020. The 40-year-old golfer is eyeing a second US Open triumph this week as the tournament tees off at Oakmont Country Club on Thursday. According to National Club Golfer, Johnson has raked in an impressive £42.7million ($57.7m) since joining LIV Golf in 2022. ‌ This figure doesn't include the £55.9m ($75.5m) that Johnson has earned from the PGA Tour. However, his wife Paulina, who recently posed with Johnson for a photoshoot ahead of the US Open, is no stranger to sports-related wealth as she's the daughter of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky. ‌ Dustin Johnson and Paulina Gretzky's relationship Their paths first crossed in 2009 and the couple began dating four years later. They got engaged seven months into their relationship, but didn't tie the knot until April 2022 at Blackberry Farm in Tennessee. Johnson and Gretzky are parents to two sons. Their eldest son, Tatum, was born in 2015, and their younger son, River, arrived two years later. Paulina, 36, is one of five children of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky and actress Janet Jones. Despite her husband's significant earnings from his golf career, Johnson's net worth is believed to be less than half that of his father-in-law. What is Wayne Gretzky's net worth? Gretzky, fondly referred to as 'The Great One', is universally acknowledged as one of the greatest ice hockey players in the history of the game. Celebrity Net Worth estimates his fortune to be around £185.1m ($250M), while Johnson's wealth is reportedly £74m ($100m). The 64-year-old's distinguished playing career spanned two decades in the NHL from 1979 to 1999. He remains the league's all-time leading points scorer and assist provider, boasting an impressive 61 records at the time of his retirement. ‌ Since hanging up his skates, Gretzky has ventured into team ownership and various other business endeavours. As one of his five children, Paulina stands to inherit a share of Gretzky's vast wealth in the future. How many houses does Wayne Gretzky own? The close relationship between Gretzky and Johnson was highlighted when the golfer sold his North Palm Beach mansion to the ice hockey icon in March 2022. The 7,169 sqft property is a five-bedroom canal-side house near the Harbor Isles community. It boasts six bathrooms, a lift, swimming pool and private dock. As reported by the South Florida Business Journal, Gretzky snapped up the house for £3.3m ($4.5m), earning his son-in-law Johnson a tidy £1.1m ($1.6m) profit on his original investment. The Gretzkys also have another property in Palm Beach County, Florida, having bought an Alton Community townhouse for £1.1m ($1.58m) in October 2021. ‌ Born and bred in Brantford, Ontario, Sportskeeda reports that Gretzky still owns his childhood home. In 2012, Gretzky and his wife added a property in the Frontenac neighbourhood of St Louis, Missouri, to their portfolio to help care for relatives on Jones' side of the family. The fifth property in Gretzky's collection is a lakehouse in McCall, Idaho, boasting its own private dock and stunning mountain views. However, he no longer owns the opulent Thousand Oaks, California property once known as 'Gretzky Mansion'. ‌ Built by the ice hockey legend himself in 2002, he sold it five years later for £13.7m ($18.5m), only to buy it back in 2013 for £10m ($13.5m). According to Bleacher Report, Gretzky put the house back on the market in 2020 and it eventually sold for £13m ($17.6m) in 2021. Wayne Gretzky's custom boat In addition to her father's impressive property portfolio, Paulina may also inherit the custom-built Steinway 340 HT powerboat that her parents purchased in September 2021. This 34-foot mahogany vessel, capable of speeds up to 50mph, was bought while Gretzky was staying at their Idaho lakehouse. The Steinway, hand-built by Couer Custom from sapele hardwood, has room for a dozen passengers with loungers in the open-bow area. Its expansive main cockpit is fitted with sofas for a laid-back atmosphere. There is also an upholstered sunpad at the stern. For shade-seeking guests, the hardtop is equipped with an electric bimini. Essentially Sports has revealed that hockey legend Gretzky paid £666,000 ($900k) for the distinctive boat, which proudly flies the Canadian flag at its stern. ‌ "We literally had a couple of days enjoying the boat before we left town," Gretzky told Robb Report in June 2022. "But we're heading back next week, the boat goes back in the water, and then we'll have the entire summer on the lake to have fun. "The boatyard told me it would go fast, but to tell you the truth, I'm not too bothered about that," he shared. "I was relatively fast when I skated, but these days I drive my car slow. I'm happy to drive my boat slow. I'll take comfort over speed any day." Gretzky gave a shout-out to his wife for her contributions to the boat's design, adding: "She's the creative one in the family; the only thing I asked for was to have a Canadian flag at the back."

Leroy Sane 'verbally agrees' to massive contract after Arsenal transfer links

Leroy Sane had attracted lots of attention, including from Arsenal, in recent weeks, but he is now set to snub the Gunners and Bayern Munich to join Galatasaray Arsenal have missed out on the signing of Leroy Sane after Galatasaray jumped to the front of the queue. Sane is an in-demand commodity in the summer transfer window because his Bayern Munich contract is about to expire and Arsenal are one of the clubs who have shown an interest in signing the winger. Sane's contract has been a long-running drama at Bayern this year, with stories continually leaking about his future. The Bavarian giants had been confident of securing the winger's services beyond the expiry of his deal on June 30, but that hope has now disappeared. ‌ The 29-year-old will now skip the Club World Cup, which kicks off in the United States this weekend, in order to seal a move elsewhere. There was interest from the Premier League, Napoli, Saudi club Al-Hilal and Fenerbahce but Galatasaray have beaten them all to capture the Germany international. ‌ L'Équipe says that Arsenal have dropped out of the race after Sane's representatives went to Istanbul to hammer out a deal. Sky Sports Germany says he has now verbally agreed to join the Turkish side as a free agent when his Bayern deal expires on June 30. He will sign a three-year contract with Galatasaray that is worth €15million (£12.72m) per year, according to The Athletic, which is roughly equivalent to £475,000-a-week. It is quite the coup from the club, who did the domestic double last season by winning the Turkish Super Lig and Turkish Cup. Galatasaray are about to lose their star player from the 2024/25 season, with Victor Osimhen's loan spell from Napoli expiring. Osimhen is being courted by a number of clubs, including those in the Premier League, ahead of a transfer this summer, and Sane will take up the mantle as the club's biggest star. The news will come as a blow to Arsenal, who had targeted Sane as a way of strengthening their options on the wing. The Germany international represented a cheaper alternative to Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams and already has a relationship with Mikel Arteta from their time together at Manchester City. HAVE YOUR SAY! Who should Arsenal sign to play on the wing next season? Comment below. ‌ Early in his Bayern spell, Sane talked up the influence Arteta had on his career. "I can just say positive things about Mikel Arteta. Since we started working together, he has helped me a lot on the pitch," he told The Independent. "He tried to improve my football, he told me what I did good and what I did wrong, and he tried to work on it. Next to Pep, they both really helped me and improved me, to bring me to the next level. "Even now, at Arsenal, for me, you can see he's doing a great job. You can see he has a concept, a way that he wants to play, a way that he wants his team to play, and obviously, it will take some time until everybody really understands it. I think he will do a great job as a [head] coach too." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Rory McIlroy insists patience will be key to master ‘impossible' Oakmont course

McIlroy is looking to shake off a hangover from his US Masters triumph in April, where he completed his 11-year quest for a career grand slam of winning all four majors. That will not be easy at the unforgiving Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh, characterised by notoriously thick rough, especially as the 36-year-old is battling driver issues. A post shared by U.S. Open Championship (@usopengolf) He missed the cut when the US Open was last played here in 2016, but has been putting in the work ahead of Thursday's first round. He played at the course on a scouting mission last Monday, but probably wishes he had not bothered, as he shot an 81, while he has also been watching videos of Dustin Johnson's win here nine years ago. 'I'm glad we have spotters up there because I played last Monday just in Druck's (member Stanley Druckenmiller) outing, and you hit a ball off the fairway and you were looking for a good couple of minutes just to find it,' he said. 'It's very penal if you miss. Sometimes it's penal if you don't miss. But the person with the most patience and the best attitude this week is the one that's going to win. 'There's definitely been a little bit of rain since I played. Last Monday felt impossible. I birdied the last two holes for 81. It felt pretty good. It didn't feel like I played that bad. 'It's much more benign right now than it was that Monday. They had the pins in dicey locations, and greens were running fast. It was nearly impossible. 'If you put it in the fairway, it's certainly playable. But then you just have to think about leaving your ball below the hole and just trying to make as many pars as you can. 'You get yourself in the way of a few birdies, that's a bonus.' A post shared by DP World Tour (@dpworldtour) The club's own website labels it 'The Ultimate Examination of Championship Golf', but it is fair to say other descriptions of Oakmont have not been so flattering. Bryson DeChambeau, who pipped McIlroy to the title last year, called it the 'toughest golf course in the world right now'. 'You have to hit the fairways, you have to hit greens, and you have to two-putt, worst-case scenario,' he said. 'When you've got those putts inside 10 feet, you've got to make them. It's a great test of golf. Oakmont's greens like you've never seen them before 🚁 Comment your favorite to get a closer look. — U.S. Open (@usopengolf) June 10, 2025 'I think everyone knows it's the toughest golf course in the world right now.' World number three Xander Schauffele thinks fans will get pleasure from seeing the top stars suffer. 'I don't think people turn the TV on to watch some of the guys just hit like a 200-yard shot on the green, you know what I mean?' Schauffele said. 'I think they turn on the US Open to see a guy shooting eight over and suffer. That's part of the enjoyment of playing in the US Open for viewers.'
