Moses Itauma reveals decision which led to falling back in love with boxing

Daily Mirror4 hours ago
The young British heavyweight is destined for greatness in the world of boxing, but has recently detailed how he had to fall back in love with the sport after a rough patch
Moses Itauma has revealed coach Ben Davison helped him fully restore his love for the sport of boxing.

The British heavyweight star is set for his toughest fight yet on Saturday night against veteran Dillian Whyte. The 20-year-old has been on a tear as of late and remains unbeaten inside the squared-circle. After announcing himself on the world stage with a destructive win over Mariusz Wach, Itauma followed it up with back-to-back knockout wins over Demsey McKean and Mike Balogun.

That said, it was not all plain sailing for Itauma - who is widely regarded as one of the hottest prospects in boxing's heaviest division. Two years ago, when he made his highly-anticipated debut against Marcel Bode, the young star got off to a flying start and began knocking out people for fun. But the Chatham brawler - who is set to have his fifth fight under the legendary Davison - admitted how he started to 'hate' the sport barely a year after his debut.

'Being in the ring (sparring) with all these heavyweights Daniel Dubois, Joe Joyce, Tyson Fury, Lawrence Okolie, I know that there are levels to boxing and I just felt like I was unable to learn any more,' Itauma said. The Brit admits that, under the guidance of Davison, he found a new side to the sport.
'I don't want to disrespect any of the coaches I tried or did work with. I love and respect them, but with Ben, he taught me a different side to boxing," he continued. 'He taught me there is more to boxing than punch, punch, get punched, punch back, punch, punch, punch. There is actually a whole chess game to this.'
The 20-year-old has steamrolled through every opponent that has been put in front of him and has not gone past the second round since his fourth outing. With 10 of his 12 wins coming by way of knockout, he was once tipped to surpass Mike Tyson's record of becoming the youngest heavyweight champion. Whilst that did not come to fruition, Itauma is a champion in the making.
But in order to become the best version of himself, he needs to have the right support and the right team. In March 2024, Itauma split from old trainer Alan Smith, despite scoring a brutal victory over Dan Garber not long before. Over the years, he has tried several different trainers and coaches, but never really seemed to click with anyone - until Davison.
Davison, Fury's former coach, helps train several high-level boxers, including Anthony Joshua, Fabio Wardley, Leigh Wood, Shabaz Masoud and Pat McCormack. Opening up on the famous boxing coach, Itauma explained: 'What I mean with falling out of love with boxing is, it was kind of like I felt like I reached a barrier and I was unable to break it.

'That is why I went around searching for a new trainer to get something new. I tried out a lot of coaches and Ben Davison was actually the last one I tried. If I'll be honest, when I went to Ben, I was like he has too many stars in the gym, he won't really have time for me, he won't give me time I need but my brother was like there is no harm in trying Ben Davison.
'And I went there and as I walked through the doors, there is a glass window on the door where you can see inside the gym and Ben has got all my fights up. He is writing in his notepad and he was like, 'you do this, I don't know if you're aware of it, now we need to make you aware of this and do this, this and this,' and I was like, 'rah, none of the other coaches did that.'
'And it was only when I started sparring, he would say, 'if I do this, he will do this and you can capitalise,' and I would go and do it, it would pay off and I'd be like what! Obviously we just clicked from there but the most impressive thing is how you have so many stars in the gym but each individual fighter gets the necessary time.'

This Morning star says 'I probably pushed my luck a little bit too far' in health scare

This Morning favourite Ben Shephard opened up about a previous health scare that he experienced while on a trip in New Zealand This Morning presenter Ben Shephard once suffered a major health scare that was quite serious. ‌ The daytime star, 50, burst the capillaries around his eyes after a New Zealand stunt. For thrill-seekers like Ben, New Zealand is the ultimate playground for extreme sports and adrenaline-fuelled fun. ‌ He first discovered the country's adventurous side during a gap year from uni. However, it's his most recent trip down under that's got everyone talking. ‌ Chatting to the Telegraph about his passion for travel, Ben recalled, "The last time I was there, I had to bungee jump for a television show we were filming.' "My cameraman wanted to film me from loads of different positions, so I ended up doing four bungee jumps back to back." ‌ "When I got to the hotel that night, I saw that all the capillaries around my eyes had burst from all that pressure. I probably pushed my luck a little bit too far and got carried away, but loved every minute of it." It comes as Ben previously left fans delighted by sharing his 'bucket list moment' as he marked a special milestone. The star recently turned 50 and ever since he has been celebrating with a series of challenges he set himself. He's been keeping his Instagram followers updated along the way, as he vowed to be 'the fittest I've ever been' and attempted cold water swimming, walking 5k and braving ice baths. ‌ He later continued his celebrations with a family trip to Australia. At the time, he shared a peek into his travels with his sons, Ben wrote: ' So this is just a little bit exciting!!!! 'As part of my 50th year celebrations continue (have I mentioned I've turned 50) a proper bucket list moment, as we've just landed in Australia with the family - to support the British and Irish Lions across their tests!!!! ‌ "I'm doing a bit of work but mostly doing a lot of cheering, supporting and merch acquiring…Lions Suitcases anyone. 'Can't wait for later - thoughts on the score??? Also in Brisbane for a few days any recommends will be gratefully received!' Fans and friends alike rushed to share their support, with Loose Women 's Katie Piper writing: 'That's such a great thing to do as a family.' 'So exciting,' This Morning regular Ashley James said, while Helen Skelton wrote: 'What an adventure,' and Gaby Roslin said: 'Have an amazing adventure.' Ben proved his challenges to be as fit as he could be paid off with a shoot in May showing off his six-pack.

Virgil van Dijk drops Alexander Isak transfer hint in clear message to Liverpool chiefs

Liverpool are likely to table a second bid for Alexander Isak and Virgil van Dijk appears to have thrown his support behind the move which would break the British transfer record Virgil van Dijk has strongly hinted that he wants Liverpool to break the bank and sign Alexander Isak. Liverpool have already seen a British-record offer worth £120million rejected by Newcastle, who are braced for a second bid. ‌ Isak, 25, has told the Newcastle hierarchy that he wants to leave and the Magpies are scouring the market for potential replacements for their star striker. Liverpool have already spent £79m on Hugo Ekitike but want to add more firepower in light of events this summer. ‌ Tragedy struck when Diogo Jota died in a car crash last month before the Reds sold Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez for a combined £111.7m. That's left room in the forward line, with Isak touted to fill the void. ‌ Arne Slot has remained tight-lipped on Liverpool's pursuit of the Swede and backed his current forward options ahead of Sunday's defeat to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. But after the match, Van Dijk suggested that his club need to bolster. When asked if Liverpool's squad was short of attackers, the Liverpool captain replied: "I don't know - we will find out! Everything that happened with Diogo, tragic, and Lucho (Diaz) and Darwin leaving. "Those are three senior attackers. I fully trust the club to do the right thing - what they think is good for the club." There's been a raging debate over where Liverpool need Isak. Speaking prior to the Palace game, Slot declared: "We think we already have a lot of attacking power in our team," the Liverpool manager said last week. "I think about Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, Mo Salah, Jeremie Frimpong who can play as a right winger, Florian Wirtz who can play as a left winger... I already feel I have a lot of attacking options in my squad, but always as a club we are looking at the chances in the market but that can also be in the midfield and the last line." Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher also isn't convinced that the Reds should pay such a hefty fee. "It will be an amazing signing. But from a Liverpool fan point of view, I don't want the club to spend £150m on Isak," Carragher stated on The Overlap. ‌ "I could probably imagine that he was Liverpool's No 1 target but there's something about Liverpool buying a striker [Ekitike] for £80m and he's a back-up. There's something about it that doesn't sit right to me. ‌ "I look at Isak, he's obviously thrown his toys out of the pram once Arsenal and Liverpool signed a striker. From him and his agent's point of view, did they not tell Newcastle months ago that they wanted to move on? It just seems a little bit messy. "When I think of Liverpool, it doesn't look really planned. I don't think the plan is to sign a striker for £80m and sign one for £120m. I feel for Ekitike a little bit. Because he's been brought in and then all of a sudden this Isak thing has come. "I do want Liverpool to sign Isak, but £150m for me feels like a [Kylian] Mbappe. You should be getting Mbappe for £150m." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. ‘We're sorry to see him go' – ‘Seriously good' horse removed from Aidan O'Brien's yard in high-profile transfer

He is the latest in a string of top horses to leave Britain and Ireland LEGAN TENDER 'We're sorry to see him go' – 'Seriously good' horse removed from Aidan O'Brien's yard in high-profile transfer Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) AIDAN O'BRIEN admitted he was 'sorry' to see a 'seriously good' potential superstar sold from his yard. Irish Derby runner-up Serious Contender looks to have rock-solid form to his name. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Serious Contender, right, came close to giving Lambourn a beating in the Irish Derby - and is now leaving Aidan O'Brien's yard to continue his career in Hong Kong Credit: Getty The three-year-old colt was second to Derby king Lambourn at the Curragh when he last ran in June. Prior to that he was runner-up to William Haggas' hugely promising Arc de Triomphe contender Merchant in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot. He has won two of six career races and bagged just shy of £250,000 for owners Coolmore, improving a massive 24lb in just three months. But his career will continue in Hong Kong after being sold to top trainer Danny Shum - the brains behind unstoppable Group 1 monster Romantic Warrior. New connections will be hoping Serious Contender can win even a fraction of the £21million Romantic Warrior has earned. But for O'Brien it is another top talent out the Ballydoyle door - coming hot on the heels of Royal Ascot winner Trinity College. O'Brien told the Racing Post: "His form is excellent and we're sorry to see him go, but that's what happens. "Trinity College has gone to Australia and this guy has gone to Hong Kong. That's just the way it is. "Serious Contender will do very well in Hong Kong. He'll really be suited to it. "He's a seriously good horse." Loaded Hong Kong owners have been plundering the British and Irish racing ranks in search of the next big name. And even King Charles and Queen Camilla are not immune to the huge cash being offered for some horses. The King's Falcon, who was trained by William Haggas, will move to Hong Kong to be trained by John Size. Ralph Beckett has seen Seraph Gabriel leave after he was beaten a nose in the Golden Gates Stakes at the Royal meeting. While Hampton Court third Glittering Legend is off to Hong Kong as well, having been trained by James Fanshawe previously. Both those runners will now be trained by David Eustace, the son of Newmarket trainer James and brother of Royal Ascot-winning handler Harry.
