Homage to war heroes, torchlight procession and fireworks display mark French National Day celebrations

The Hindu14-07-2025
The 236th French National Day celebrations that began with a torchlight procession to mark Bastille Day eve on Sunday featured remembrance ceremonies for war heroes, festivities and a blazing fireworks display on the beachfront near the French Consulate on Monday.
The French Consulate organised commemorative events at the French War Memorials in Puducherry and Karaikal.
In Puducherry, Etienne Rolland-Piègue, Consul General of France in Pondicherry and Chennai, led the Bastille Day ceremonies — the first year he was doing so since taking charge as Consul General in 2024. Mr. Rolland-Piègue placed wreaths at the 'Monument aux Morts' (War Memorial) on Goubert Avenue.
District Collector A. Kulothungan represented the government of Puducherry in paying homage. The War Memorials in Puducherry and Karaikal remained open to families for an hour after the official ceremonies for private wreath-laying.
French National Day observed every year on July 14 to commemorate the storming of the Bastille Prison on July 14, 1789, a pivotal point of the French Revolution that led to the establishment of a Republic.
On Sunday, a colourful torchlight procession, headed by a music band, and featuring lanterns wrapped in colours of the national flags of France and India, marched down the Promenade Beach to mark Bastille Day eve. The symbolic night march, that began in front of the Dupleix Statue and ended near the building of the French Consulate on Goubert Avenue, was to signify the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, a defining point in the French Revolution.
Members of the French expat community in the city, representatives of war veterans associations, youth and tourists joined the procession launched in the presence of the Consul General of France.
The event was organised under the auspices of 'Le Souvenir Francaise' (The Souvenir Français), an association founded in 1887 with a mission to honour the memory of all those who died for France, whether French or foreign, and to help maintain tombs and monuments.
The French Consulate celebrated Bastille Day both as a symbol of unity of the French people in forming a republic and its enshrined principles of liberty, equality, and fraternity, as well as a reaffirmation of a strengthening friendship based on shared values between France and India.
A reception hosted by Mr. Rolland-Piègue at the Consulate was attended by Speaker R. Selvam, Tourism Minister K. Lakshminarayanan, Deputy Speaker P. Rajavelu and officials.
The celebrations concluded with the traditional fireworks display on the seafront in front of the Consulate General of France.

Budapest Tipped As Top Choice For Russia-Ukraine Peace Summit With Trump: Report

The US Secret Service has allegedly initiated logistical and security assessments in Budapest, signalling that the site is being seriously considered. Following individual meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, US President Donald Trump has now 'begun preparations" for a trilateral summit aimed at negotiating an end to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to a report by Politico, which cited a source close to the White House, several venues are under consideration, with Hungary's capital, Budapest, emerging as the leading candidate. The US Secret Service has allegedly initiated logistical and security assessments in Budapest, signalling that the site is being seriously considered. Hungary's potential role as host is notable, given Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's longstanding alliance with Trump, dating back to his first presidential term. Orbán has also maintained cordial ties with the Kremlin, often diverging from broader EU policies on Russia, further positioning Hungary as a favourable location for Moscow. Budapest's appeal for the summit extends beyond diplomacy. According to an APT report, Hungary's recent withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in March 2025 provides Russian President Vladimir Putin with a key advantage, i.e., immunity from arrest under the ICC's warrant. The ICC issued an arrest order for Putin in March 2023, holding him responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation and transfer of Ukrainian children during the conflict. While ICC member states are legally obligated to detain individuals under indictment if they enter their territory, Hungary's withdrawal offers a legal loophole, ensuring Putin's protection. Despite the momentum building around Budapest, neither Trump nor Zelenskyy confirmed the date or venue for the summit during their meeting at the White House earlier this week. Alternate proposals have also been floated. During a recent meeting in Alaska, Putin proposed Moscow as a potential venue, while French President Emmanuel Macron advocated for Geneva, suggesting Switzerland's historical neutrality made it a suitable host. Switzerland has even offered diplomatic immunity to Putin for the purpose of peace talks, signalling its openness to facilitate negotiations. However, Budapest may be a politically sensitive choice for Ukraine. The city evokes painful memories of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, under which the US, UK, and Russia guaranteed Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity in exchange for giving up its nuclear arsenal. That agreement lost credibility when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, with signatories failing to provide military support to Ukraine in response. view comments First Published: August 19, 2025, 23:43 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Why is China showing keen interest in debris of SCALP and Brahmos missiles launched by India on Pakistan during Operation Sindoor?

New Delhi: India attacked Pakistan with French SCALP-EG, Israeli Harop drone and indigenous Brahmos missile during Operation Sindoor. Pakistan's Chinese-origin radar system completely failed to track these missiles. Even the Chinese air defence system could not intercept these missiles. What is the interest of China in the debris of Indian missiles? Now, China is interested in knowing the technology of these missiles, and for this, it is examining the debris of these missiles. According to reports, China has asked for the debris of these missiles from Pakistan so that it can analyse it. According to the defence sources, the debris of these missiles recovered from Pakistani territory after Indian air strikes has become major material for gathering technical intelligence (TECHINT) by rival countries, especially China. According to reports, the debris that fell inside Pakistan's border is being studied closely. American and Western experts say that these pieces will not only reveal the design and performance of the weapons, but they can also be used in future counter-measures development, i.e. anti-missile technology. Brahmos and SCALP missiles are being examined in Pakistan The Indian Air Force used Brahmos and SCALP-EG missiles to target important military bases of Pakistan during Operation Sindoor in early May. Among these, the debris of the Brahmos that attacked the Shahbaz Air Base of the Pakistan Air Force is being examined. It has been claimed that the debris from the Brahmos can reveal some important technology, like the Russian origin seeker system. Apart from this, according to Pakistani media, a few days later, pieces of Brahmos were also found around a mosque near Bahawalpur. However, Indian experts believe that nothing like this will be found in the investigation of the debris of the Brahmos missile. The infrastructure of Shahbaz Air Base was destroyed in the Brahmos missile attack. An American analyst has said in a report that the debris of Brahmos or SCALP missiles is a treasure trove of information, because it can reveal much information about these advanced systems. Brahmos and SCALP-EG are both destructive missiles Brahmos and SCALP-EG missiles are very advanced. The strength of the Brahmos missile is its destructive power and its advanced supersonic speed. The speed of Brahmos is Mach 3 (3704 kmph), and it is almost impossible to intercept it. Even America cannot intercept the Brahmos missile. On the other hand, the French origin SCALP-EG is famous for its stealth, terrain-hugging flight and long range (250–560 km) and accurate strike capability. SCALP-EG can destroy even strong bunkers. The new ER (Extended Range) version of Brahmos can strike up to 450–1000 km. During air attacks, India launches it with the Russian SU-30MKI, while SCALP-EG is launched with Rafale fighter jets.

Macron calls Putin 'predator' and 'ogre at our gates'

French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) warned European allies not to trust Russian President Vladimir Putin whom he called "an ogre at our gates". Mr. Macron's remarks came as Russian and Ukrainian presidents Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky looked set for a peace summit after fast-moving talks Monday between Donald Trump and European leaders that focused on the key issue of long-term security guarantees for Kyiv. "Putin has rarely honoured his commitments," Mr. Macron told the LCI broadcaster. "He has constantly been a force for destabilisation. He has sought to redraw borders to increase his power." Mr. Macron said he did not believe that Russia would "return to peace and a democratic system from one day to the next". Mr. Putin, "including for his own survival, needs to keep eating", Mr. Macron said. "That means he is a predator, an ogre at our gates." This did not mean that France would "come under attack tomorrow", Mr. Macron said, "but of course this is a threat to Europe (...) let's not be naive."
