Scientists accidentally discover powerful energy storage material: 'Exceptional performance and durability'
We use plastics throughout our everyday lives. Plastics help keep food fresh and medical equipment sterile, and they provide insulation within our electronics. As it turns out, plastics can do even more.
Scientists in the 1970s accidentally discovered that some plastics can also conduct electricity. Many applications have since been developed to use plastics for energy storage. However, certain plastics are limited by their lack of electrical conductivity and surface area for storage.
The scientists at UCLA found a way to increase the conductivity and surface area of a certain type of plastic called PEDOT, short for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), detailed in their paper published in Advanced Functional Materials.
Usually used as a protective film for electronic components and photographic films to prevent static electricity, PEDOT is also found in touch screens and smart windows.
Up until now, PEDOT lacked the electrical conductivity and surface area to be useful for energy storage, but the UCLA chemists found a way to control the morphology of PEDOT and precisely grow nanofibers.
The nanofibers, which resemble dense grass, solve both problems: They're exceptionally conductive and greatly increase the surface area of the PEDOT material, giving them the potential for supercapacitor applications.
Supercapacitors are able to charge and discharge very quickly because — unlike batteries — they store and release energy by accumulating electrical charge on their surface. This makes them suitable for applications requiring bursts of power, like camera flashes and regenerative braking systems in both hybrid and electric vehicles.
This capability could allow supercapacitors to reduce our dependence on dirty fuels, helping to curb rising global temperatures. Reducing the use of dirty energy sources will lead to cleaner air, safer communities, and fewer extreme weather events.

The new PEDOT material's conductivity is 100 times higher than commercial PEDOT products, and the nanofibers' electrochemically active surface area is four times greater than that of traditional PEDOT material, according to the TechXplore article.
"The exceptional performance and durability of our electrodes shows great potential for graphene PEDOT's use in supercapacitors that can help our society meet our energy needs," said the corresponding author of the study, Richard Kaner, a UCLA distinguished professor of chemistry and of materials science and engineering.

Cancer vaccine shows promise in preventing recurrence of pancreatic, colorectal tumors
An experimental cancer vaccine has shown promise in keeping certain cancers from coming back. In a phase 1 clinical trial led in part by the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, researchers tested the vaccine (ELI-002 2P) with 25 patients who had been treated for pancreatic and colorectal cancer. The patients had all undergone surgery to remove tumors and showed "signs of minimal residual disease" or traces of DNA, putting them at a high risk of recurrence, according to a UCLA press release. More than 80% of pancreatic cancer patients experience recurrence of the disease after surgery, research shows — and for 40% to 50%, this happens within the first year. For colorectal cancer, the recurrence rate is between 30% and 50% and is most likely to occur within the first two years after surgery. Mutations in the KRAS gene are responsible for half of colorectal cancers and more than 90% of pancreatic cancers. The vaccine, which targets those mutations, was given via a series of injections to activate an immune response in the lymph nodes. A majority (21 out of 25) of the patients generated "KRAS-specific T cells," which indicates a stronger immune response. The ones with higher T-cell responses showed a longer relapse-free survival compared to those with lower responses, the researchers found. For three colorectal cancer patients and three pancreatic cancer patients, the vaccine appeared to remove all disease biomarkers. Among the patients who showed the strongest immune response, a majority were still cancer-free nearly 20 months after receiving the vaccine. The findings were published in Nature Medicine. "This is an exciting advance for patients with KRAS-driven cancers, particularly pancreatic cancer, where recurrence after standard treatment is almost a given and effective therapies are limited," said first author of the study, Zev Wainberg, M.D., professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and researcher in the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, in the release. "We observed that patients who developed strong immune responses to the vaccine remained disease-free and survived for much longer than expected." "The new cancer vaccine from UCLA is very promising as a major tool against these cancers." In another finding, 67% of the patients in the trial showed immune responses to "additional tumor-associated mutations," indicating that the vaccine could be used to suppress "broader anti-tumor activity." One of the benefits of ELI-002 2P, according to the researchers, is that it's considered "off-the-shelf," which means it's a mass-produced, standardized vaccine that doesn't have to be personalized for each individual patient. "This study shows that the ELI-002 2P vaccine can safely and effectively train the immune system to recognize and fight cancer-driving mutations," Wainberg said. "It offers a promising approach to generating precise and durable immune responses without the complexity or cost of fully personalized vaccines." The team has already finished enrolling participants for a phase 2 study that will test ELI-002 7P, the next iteration of the vaccine that will target a "broader set" of KRAS mutations, the release stated. The study was sponsored and funded by Elicio Therapeutics, the Massachusetts company that developed the vaccine. It was conducted in conjunction with the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, was not involved in the study but commented that targeted therapies are becoming increasingly important tools in the fight against cancer. "Solid tumors, especially pancreatic, can be difficult to treat because they are not as mutagenic (capable of inducing or causing mutations) as hematological malignancies (blood cancers) or melanoma, for example, so they don't have as many ready targets for immunotherapy," he told Fox News Digital. Trump administration ordered to partially restore UCLA funding
A district judge ordered the partial restoration of federal funding to the University of California, Los Angeles on Tuesday after the Trump administration paused more than $550 million to the institution.U.S. District Judge Rita Lin ruled that the pausing of some of the grants violates a previous preliminary injunction in which she said the administration had to restore funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) that was stripped back in June. The Los Angeles Times reported UCLA will see one-third of the funding restored from this decision. 'While we have not had an opportunity to review the court's order and were not party to the suit, restoration of National Science Foundation funds is critical to research the University of California performs on behalf of California and the nation,' a spokesperson for the institution said in a statement. The judge gave the Trump administration until Aug. 19 to prove it has unfrozen funds or to provide an explanation on why the steps have not been taken. 'Pursuant to the ruling by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California on August 12th, the U.S. National Science Foundation has reinstated the suspended awards to the University of California – Los Angeles,' an NSF spokesperson said. The decision comes as the White House is eyeing a $1 billion settlement with UCLA for the federal funding to be restored, along with other concessions such as changes to admissions practices and a ban on transgender women competing in women's sports. The pulled grants came after the Department of Justice determined UCLA was violating civil rights law due to antisemitism on campus. The University of California is engaged in conversation with the Trump administration to restore the funding and the institution's ability to apply for new grants. 'Currently, a total of approximately $584 million in extramural award funding is suspended and at risk,' Julio Frenk, chancellor of the university, wrote in a letter that went out to the community.
