LIV Golf Announces $22 Million Golfer Abruptly Withdraws at Virginia
LIV Golf Announces $22 Million Golfer Abruptly Withdraws at Virginia originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
LIV Golf has shaken up the traditional golf scene by introducing a unique team-based format alongside its competition. Unlike the PGA Tour, where players compete solely for individual glory, LIV Golf crowns both an individual champion each week and a winning team. Each four-player squad works together to rack up points, with every stroke affecting the team leaderboard as much as the individual standings.

One of LIV Golf's youngest and most electrifying talents, Matthew Wolff, was set to tee off for Range Goats GC at LIV Golf Virginia, but his tournament ended abruptly on Wednesday. Shortly after his tee shot at the par-4 eighth, Wolff grimaced, pulled up, and withdrew with an apparent muscle strain.

His departure came as a shock, Wolff, a $22 million career earner already turning heads. Most of his earnings are from LIV Golf, yet PGA too has a contribution in it.
"Matthew Wolff WD (injury) after his 8th hole...Reserve Ollie Schniederjans joins field, will play remainder of Rd. 1 in place of Wolff," LIV Golf wrote on X.

Fellow Range Goats member Ollie Schniederjans—who had been on standby—stepped in to finish the round. While Ollie's score over the final ten holes counts toward the Range Goats' team total, it won't affect his individual ranking this week.
Wolff's résumé is impressive: he drained the winning putt to capture the 2018 NCAA Division I Championship for Oklahoma State, aced a hole-in-one at LIV Golf Boston in 2022, and won the 3M Open in just his third PGA Tour start in 2019. He also notched two top-5 finishes in his first major appearances and led the U.S. Open after 54 holes in 2020—the youngest ever to do so.
Although his individual campaign at LIV Golf Virginia was cut short, Wolff's presence still looms large. As his teammates rally to keep Range Goats in contention, fans everywhere will be watching to see when the young phenom bolts back into action—ideally pain-free and firing on all cylinders.

Shaquille O'Neal Doesn't Hold Back on Jayson Tatum's Hall of Fame Chances
Shaquille O'Neal Doesn't Hold Back on Jayson Tatum's Hall of Fame Chances originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shaquille O'Neal has played a major role within the NBA for over 30 years, building one of the most decorated resumes of all time as a player and later becoming a well-liked TV personality during his tenure with the "NBA on TNT" cast. Advertisement In his 19-year playing career, O'Neal won four championships, an MVP Award, and sits among the top ten all-time scoring leaders. Since stepping off the court, he's begun hosting "The Big Podcast" alongside his "NBA on TNT" partner Adam Lefkoe. On Thursday's episode, Lefkoe claimed Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum's resume is enough for a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame induction, right now, and Shaq didn't hold back. 'You ever see that movie 'Ocean's Thirteen?' I'm going to break into the Hall of Fame and take all of my (expletive) out,' O'Neal said. You (expletive) just throwing people in there now." Advertisement Shaq went on to say he thinks there are two types of Hall of Fames: a "bad" one and a "basketball" one. "Isiah Thomas said it the best one day, he said there's two Hall of Fames," Shaq added. "There's a bad (expletive) Hall of Fame and there's a basketball Hall of Fame." At only 27 years of age, Tatum has racked up six All-Star appearances, five All-NBA selections and an NBA championship. With high expectations joining a legendary organization like the Celtics, the 2017 third-overall pick had all the pressure in the world to perform. According to Shaq, these accolades, combined with career averages of 23.6 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game (via ESPN), may not be enough to make it into the Hall of Fame right now, but he didn't rule it out when it's all said and done. Schefter Offers Gruesome Bills Prediction on James Cook
Schefter Offers Gruesome Bills Prediction on James Cook originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The business side of the NFL is heading the Buffalo Bills' offseason, with running back James Cook seeking a new contract as he enters the final year of his rookie deal. Advertisement But there's a big problem. The Bills, through re-signing other stars this offseason, despite Cook stating first he wanted a new deal, having only $1.6 million in cap space per Over The Cap. James wasn't at OTAs, which is, of course, voluntary, but there have been little breadcrumbs laid out by Cook, seemingly voicing his discontent at the lack of movement on a new deal. Now, ESPN's Adam Schefter is discussing it all in his podcast, offering a rather grim view of the situation between Buffalo and Cook. 'It bears watching because you've got a guy who's unhappy with this contractual situation, who has basically disconnected himself from the organization, the city, put his house up for sale,' Schefter said. 'I don't think we'll be seeing him in Buffalo anytime soon, and again, the start of training camp will be the next critical moment. If they don't have a deal done there by then, does James Cook show up for training camp? Does he risk the penalties if he doesn't show up?" Buffalo Bills running back James Cook.© Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images That doesn't sound promising at all. Advertisement Buffalo's mandatory mini-camp will take place this week, and that will also serve as a test of Cook's mental state regarding his contract. Seen as one of the key offensive pieces for coordinator Joe Brady, this has the potential to get rather ugly the longer it goes without something being done. But Buffalo, barring some serious salary cap gymnastics, won't be able to get a deal done with the two-time Pro Bowler, and where that leaves Cook and the offense is unknown. And that isn't a good spot to be for a franchise aiming for Super Bowl glory. Winless Indian launches into LIV Golf Virginia lead
Pursuing his first individual LIV Golf win, India's Anirban Lahiri has recorded a bogey-free second round at seven-under 64 to hold a two-shot lead in Virginia. A runner-up on the breakaway circuit four times, Lahiri sank seven birdies and made a 39-foot par putt on No.16 on Saturday, then finished strong with a par on No.18 after landing in the rough. On the last, he had to get up and down from a distance of more than 100 yards. "Yeah, those felt like birdies as well," Lahiri said of his impressive finish to the day at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. "I think the first 15 holes was about as solid as I could have played. I missed a few putts and I still made quite a lot of birdies. "Then 16, I was trying to hit like an in-between 9-iron and I tried to compress it a little bit too much, and everyone else saw what happened. It was nice to make that putt." He saved Par from here... 😱Unbelievable save from @anirbangolf on the 16th hole 😮#LIVGolfVirginia @crushers_gc — LIV Golf (@livgolf_league) June 7, 2025 Veterans Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell - who are also chasing their first individual LIV Golf win - are at nine under entering Sunday's final round, just two shots behind the leader. "It's always good to be close to the lead, have a chance on the last day," Watson said. "Looking forward to it. Looking forward to the challenge of this golf course ... You hit your driver good, you hit your irons in the right spots, you have a chance to play this golf course." RangeGoats GC captain Watson birdied the 17th and 18th, then closed his round with pars on the first and second en route to a six-under 65. Kaymer, who shared the first-round lead with Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau, shot a four-under 67. View this post on Instagram A post shared by LIV Golf (@livgolf_league) McDowell notched three straight birdies on Nos. 15-17 to put himself in contention with a five-under 66. Joaquin Niemann, DeChambeau and Jon Rahm, the top three in the individual standings, are tied for fifth at seven under, four shots off top spot. Marc Leishman (71) is the leading Australian at four under and in joint 14th, with Cameron Smith (70) two under, Lucas Herbert (73) six over and Matt Jones (75) eight over. With AAP.
