LIV Golf Announces $22 Million Golfer Abruptly Withdraws at Virginia

LIV Golf Announces $22 Million Golfer Abruptly Withdraws at Virginia originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
LIV Golf has shaken up the traditional golf scene by introducing a unique team-based format alongside its competition. Unlike the PGA Tour, where players compete solely for individual glory, LIV Golf crowns both an individual champion each week and a winning team. Each four-player squad works together to rack up points, with every stroke affecting the team leaderboard as much as the individual standings.

One of LIV Golf's youngest and most electrifying talents, Matthew Wolff, was set to tee off for Range Goats GC at LIV Golf Virginia, but his tournament ended abruptly on Wednesday. Shortly after his tee shot at the par-4 eighth, Wolff grimaced, pulled up, and withdrew with an apparent muscle strain.

His departure came as a shock, Wolff, a $22 million career earner already turning heads. Most of his earnings are from LIV Golf, yet PGA too has a contribution in it.
"Matthew Wolff WD (injury) after his 8th hole...Reserve Ollie Schniederjans joins field, will play remainder of Rd. 1 in place of Wolff," LIV Golf wrote on X.

Fellow Range Goats member Ollie Schniederjans—who had been on standby—stepped in to finish the round. While Ollie's score over the final ten holes counts toward the Range Goats' team total, it won't affect his individual ranking this week.
Wolff's résumé is impressive: he drained the winning putt to capture the 2018 NCAA Division I Championship for Oklahoma State, aced a hole-in-one at LIV Golf Boston in 2022, and won the 3M Open in just his third PGA Tour start in 2019. He also notched two top-5 finishes in his first major appearances and led the U.S. Open after 54 holes in 2020—the youngest ever to do so.
Although his individual campaign at LIV Golf Virginia was cut short, Wolff's presence still looms large. As his teammates rally to keep Range Goats in contention, fans everywhere will be watching to see when the young phenom bolts back into action—ideally pain-free and firing on all cylinders.

Aaron Boone Makes Feelings Clear After Yankees' Big Trade

Aaron Boone Makes Feelings Clear After Yankees' Big Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Yankees didn't come into the season with the strongest third base situation, and it only got worse over time. They converted traditional second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the hot corner after getting him at the Trade Deadline last season and installed a timeshare with him, DJ LeMahieu, Oswald Peraza, and Oswaldo Cabrera there in 2025. However, the latter player broke his ankle on May 12, and the Yankees released the now 37-year-old LeMahieu on July 10. Chisholm was primarily back at second at that point, so this left Peraza and Jorbit Vivas as their only true remaining third basemen. With Peraza hitting .147 and Vivas hitting .164, it was clear what the team's biggest need was. That's why it acquired veteran third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies on Friday. New York manager Aaron Boone gave his thoughts about the 30-year-old before Friday's bout with the Philadelphia Phillies, via SNY. "I know there's real offensive potential there. I know he's had real offensive success, as well as some struggles there over the last calendar year or two," he said. "It seems like over the last month he's really started swinging the bat like he's capable of. He can impact the ball, he can control the strike zone, he's had some swing-and-misses that have probably hurt him a little bit." "But then he can really defend over there," he continued. "The handful of times that we've played against them that I watch him, you're like, 'That's what it should look like over there.' He moves really well and has that prototypical good third base thing." McMahon is slashing .217/.314/.403 with 16 homers and 35 RBI over 100 games this season. He also has a .978 fielding percentage and six errors. Right-handed pitcher Will Warren (6-5, 4.91 ERA) will start for the Yankees against Phillies right-hander Taijuan Walker (3-5, 3.75 ERA) on Friday. Yankees' Aaron Boone Provides Giancarlo Stanton Update After Aaron Judge Injury

Yankees' Aaron Boone Provides Giancarlo Stanton Update After Aaron Judge Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Yankees are one of the best teams in the AL, but the absence of Aaron Judge changes the equation. The 33-year-old is on the 10-day IL with a flexor strain in his right elbow, which puts the Yankees in a bind. Losing Judge for any extended period doesn't just mean losing a star; it means losing the best hitter of this generation. The AL MVP favorite leads baseball with a .342 batting average and a 1.160 OPS, and he's third in both homers (37) and RBI (85). On top of that, Judge's injury affects fellow slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Judge plays right field while Stanton designated hits, but the latter player could be forced to play outfield for the first time since 2023 if Judge is too injured to throw upon return. In that case, Judge would be the designated hitter. Yankees manager Aaron Boone explained the team's plans for Stanton before Monday's bout with the Tampa Bay Rays, via SNY. "Yeah, sure," he said about the Yankees considering playing Stanton in the outfield. "But even right now, [envisioning] bringing Judgie back initially, you still got Jasson [Dominguez], Grish [Trent Grisham], and Belli [Cody Bellinger], so I don't view it a lot." "But obviously want to keep G playing as much as we can, and [have] his bat in there," he continued. "Want to get a feel of what it [him playing in the outfield] ooks like, how he's responding. I want to hear his thoughts on it. Does he feel like it's a real option? And then to have that in your pocket, sure, it's a nice something to have where it gives you more bench flexibility on a given day." Stanton is slashing .276/.355/.520 with seven homers and 20 RBI over 29 games this season. The 35-year-old tallied 27 homers and 72 RBI over 114 regular-season games last year before notching seven homers and 16 RBI over 14 playoff contests. New York is 5.5 games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the AL East and one game ahead of the Boston Red Sox for the first Wild Card spot. Thomas Castellanos Adds More Flame to Alabama Comments

Thomas Castellanos Adds More Flame to Alabama Comments originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida State Seminoles open the 2025 season against each other in Tallahassee, and things are continuing to heat up. Florida State quarterback Thomas Castellanos got things started by taunting Alabama in June, stating that the Crimson Tide no longer had Nick Saban to save them. On Wednesday at ACC Media Days, Castellanos was asked if he would have said some things differently about Alabama in hindsight. However, he was firm in his stance, standing by what he had said. The stance is interesting from the Florida State gunslinger, considering he appeared to backtrack the comments when at a workout with Alabama receiver Isaiah Horton. "Most definitely, but we stand on what I said," Castellanos said. "So, I said what I said, and we stand on that. I don't mean no disrespect to none of those guys at Alabama or anything like that. It's just I have confidence in my guys and the work that we've been putting in, and preparing, and the preparation we've been ya know putting together. That's all that was. No disrespect to those guys, but we stand on what I said." The comments caught the attention of Alabama Heisman winner Mark Ingram II (2009), who thanked Castellanos for giving the Crimson extra motivation. Castellanos is in his first year with a new team, having transferred from the Boston College Eagles. The Seminoles are fresh off their worst season under head coach Mike Norvell after a 2-10 finish in 2024. Alabama will also have a new quarterback under center, in Ty Simpson, who has been the backup for the last three seasons. The much-anticipated showdown is set for August 30, with a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff on story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 23, 2025, where it first appeared.
