Billy Slater's sad family admission before Origin as QLD buoyed by Kalyn Ponga news
And while that will come as welcome news for Slater and the Queensland side, the Maroons coach admits he'll head into Wednesday night's Origin opener at Suncorp Stadium missing the one man he could always count on for support and advice. Slater's dad Ron passed away in January in Cairns hospital at the age of 72 after a lengthy battle with the chronic lung disease, emphysema.
It continued a devastating 12 months for the Slater family after Billy's brother-in-law Ryan Craig drowned in Mackay trying to save his daughter in March, last year. The late father-of-four was married to Slater's older sister Sheena and the heartbreaking tragedy left the family and the local community shattered.
Amid his family heartbreak, Slater has managed to juggle his various roles in the media with Channel Nine, as well as Queensland's coach and a horse breeder alongside his wife, Nicole. But in an interview with ahead of the Origin series opener, Slater admits it will be tough leading his state against the Blues for the first time without his 'best mate' and father Ron in his corner.
'I used to run the Queensland team by dad every game. I can't do that anymore,' Slater told the publication after admitting that he misses his old man every day. 'I do a lot of travelling in the car, going to the airport, and dad was the No.1 number on my phone that I would hit. I can't make that call anymore for a chat, so they are the times I really miss him."
Slater credits his dad for his love of rugby league but their playing styles could not have been much different. While Ron was a tough lock from Innisfail regarded as one of the best forwards in country league for Queensland back in his playing days, Billy was a silky-skilled and speedy livewire who would go on to become one of the greatest fullbacks the game has ever seen.
The Maroons coach will be hoping to pass on some inspiration to Queensland's current No.1 Ponga, who's been declared fit for Game 1 on Wednesday night after training fully with the squad for the first time on Saturday. The sight of Ponga pointing to his quad and failing to join in with the rest of the group at Maroons camp earlier in the week would have left fans around the state feeling very nervous.

But after doing his own rehab running and training separately from the rest of the squad, the Newcastle Knights skipper took his place with the main group for the first time on Saturday in a huge boost to their hopes of winning Game 1. With Reece Walsh out injured, Slater has picked Ponga to start at fullback for the first time since 2022 when he was man of the match in Queensland's series-clinching win.
"Kalyn will be right to go. He missed the first couple of training sessions, but he will be ready to go next Wednesday night," Maroons utility Tom Dearden said. "It's just the type of player he is, he won't miss a beat. He has been in this team a few times so he knows what to do when he is out there."
Even when Ponga was unable to train earlier in the week, he was seen picking Slater's brain and gaining valuable advice off the Maroons legend. And Ponga says confidence and clarity that his coach has instilled leaves him raring to go for Game 1. "It's knowing my role and nailing it," Ponga said. I have a job to do in defence, but that freedom to roam in attack and be an extension of our spine helping Munny (Cameron Munster) and Chez (Daly Cherry-Evans), that's what I look forward to."

'Segecic a player the fans can love'
Australian forward Adrian Segecic has grabbed his opportunity since joining Portsmouth, according to team-mate Josh Murphy. The 21-year-old has scored two goals in the club's opening two Championship matches this season having signed from Sydney FC in June. "Segs is a really good guy around the place and a live wire on the pitch - he's got back-to-back goals and I've said to him, 'Just keep going,'" Murphy told BBC Radio Solent. "He's the player who has come in and grabbed his opportunity, and hopefully he's going to be a mainstay in the team, and propel us to where we want to be." Portsmouth followed their opening day win at Oxford United with a 2-1 home defeat by Norwich City on Saturday, but Murphy said his link-up with Segecic is a major positive from those two games. "The partnership has been building in pre-season, so I'm looking forward to building on that with him, and he's going to be one the fans love," added Murphy. "I wish more players in the team could back themselves like Segs does as we've got a fantastic squad - he's got that confidence where he wants to get on the ball, and when we don't have the ball he's one of those who rats around, so he's a great addition to the team." Portsmouth continue their Championship campaign at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, 23 August (15:00 BST). 'We love Nas': Saints star makes call on AFL future
Ross Lyon has spoken plainly about Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera's AFL re-signing, saying it would have been "catastrophic" had the young gun left St Kilda. Wanganeen-Milera, one of the brightest young talents in the game, has given the Saints their best news in 15 years by rejecting huge interest from the Adelaide clubs and committing for two more years. The 22-year-old breakout star becomes the first AFL player to earn $2 million per year in signing through to the end of 2027. A membership offer released to celebrate the news generated so much interest it crashed the club website on Monday afternoon. "A good dopamine release, bit of euphoria ... relief as well, because it's such an important piece of our puzzle," Lyon told the Seven Network of his reaction when Wanganeen-Milera told him on Monday afternoon. "It would have been catastrophic for the overall strategy, because from there it's like 'well, where's our really high-level performer? "He's top of the pops at the moment as a 22-year-old. It would mean a re-calibrating of the strategy, I would have thought - how many drafts do you need to go to? How do those free agents, that we're trying to track, look? "So it was a pivotal piece." The Saints coach found out when Wanganeen-Milera texted him and then walked into his office early on Monday afternoon with teammate Brad Hill and assistant coach Corey Enright. Hill's baby daughter Harriet broke the news at a Saints players' meeting, sparking raucous scenes. Hilly and Harriet break some big news 😍 — St Kilda FC (@stkildafc) August 18, 2025 "We love Harriet and we love Nas," Lyon yelled. Wanganeen-Milera had been cagey about his future, the most hotly anticipated contract call this year, amid his breakout season. He turned his back on monster long-term offers from Adelaide and Port Adelaide. The hot speculation is that St Kilda will also recruit Carlton ruckman Tom De Koning, meaning he and Wanganeen-Milera will take up about 20 per cent of their salary cap. Wanganeen-Milera said he is glad the "stress" of his decision is over, adding family and teammates were pivotal. The catalyst was his parents paying a visit last week. "It was always up in the air around the course of the year, but I had a firm chat with my parents and manager," the Adelaide native said. "The relationships I have here were huge in my decision ... I just felt like it wasn't right to leave. "I wanted to achieve something special with (teammates) ... I love all the boys." The South Australian was the major target for Adelaide and Port, though neither realistically had the draft capital to appease the Saints in a trade this year. The short-term contract means the two Adelaide clubs will circle again with fresh attempts to lure Wanganeen-Milera back to his home state, and with time to amass better trade capital. But the deal also gives St Kilda the opportunity to show their young star, pivotal to their on-field fortunes, that Moorabbin is the place to be long term. It is the best news for long-suffering Saints fans since their team was in premiership contention in 2009-10. Wanganeen-Milera, who was pick No.11 in the 2022 draft, has been moved from half-back into the midfield with devastating effect this season. The silky-skilled star with a scintillating turn of pace has emerged as a genuine matchwinner. That included a breathtaking performance against Melbourne, including the final two goals at the death to deliver a six-point victory. Port Adelaide captain Connor Rozee was among Power players who made direct pitches to Wanganeen-Milera. "Not only us, but I think every side in the competition would love to have a player like him," Rozee told reporters on Monday. "He has earnt every part of what is coming his way." With their main man locked in, St Kilda will continue to attempt to bolster their list around him. The Saints have a huge seven-year contract in front of free agent De Koning, with the ruckman expected to walk for close to $1.7 million per year, and are also after GWS defender Leek Aleer. Midfielder Marcus Windhager is yet to re-sign, while popular ruckman Rowan Marshall appears no certainty to stay. St Kilda won't play finals this season but are on a four-game winning streak ahead of facing the Giants away on Sunday.
