RCMP in P.E.I. say victim shot dead in car was 35-year-old man; no arrests made yet
Cpl. Gavin Moore, the media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP, told reporters that police believe another vehicle was present on the Hackmatack Road when shots were reported at around 8 p.m. AT on Friday, in the Urbainville area near Wellington.
Moore did not identify the victim of the shooting, which forced a 2008 Toyota Corolla to roll over and strike a utility pole.
The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger, a 50-year-old Summerside woman, was taken to Prince County Hospital with serious injuries.
Moore did not give an update on her condition, saying the families of both people in the Corolla had requested privacy. He did say that both parties in the car sustained injuries as a result of the crash, and the man had gunshot wounds.
He also said a burned vehicle found at St. Lawrence, near Miminegash, which was reported to police at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, may be linked to the case.
Since news of the shooting emerged Saturday morning, hundreds of people have been sharing rumours on social media about what happened. Many asked why police had not confirmed whether they were seeking a specific suspect or alerting people living near where a suspected suspect could be hiding out.
"The perpetrator had fled the area and there was very little information to share," Moore said Monday as he explained why the circumstances did not qualify for an emergency alert.
The RCMP Major Crime Unit is the lead investigating body, with forensic, canine and traffic support as well as help from Summerside and Kensington's police agencies and the P.E.I. Coroners Office.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact Prince District RCMP at 902-853-9300 or 902-436-9300.
People wanting to stay anonymous are being asked to call P.E.I. Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

'Extremely dangerous': Alleged impaired driver going wrong way in fatal Henday crash nearly struck RCMP cruiser
A fatal collision on Anthony Henday Drive early Saturday morning was caused by an alleged impaired driver going the wrong way, nearly striking a police cruiser, say Alberta RCMP. At 1:30 a.m.. Edmonton police received a call about a single-vehicle collision on the southbound portion of Anthony Henday Drive near the Highway 14 overpass. A Chevrolet Cruze struck a light standard and caught fire. Witnesses to the crash pulled a 23-year-old man driving the car from the vehicle, but he died on scene. It was reported to police that a second vehicle, a Chevrolet Cavalier, was the cause of the crash, and an officer with the Strathcona RCMP discovered the vehicle driving the wrong way on Anthony Henday Drive, and was able to arrest the driver, a 23-year-old woman from Edmonton. 'The suspect vehicle was driving northbound in the southbound lane approaching the Whitemud, so it was extremely dangerous,' said Alberta RCMP Const. Gina Slaney in an interview with Postmedia on Tuesday. 'The constable got onto Highway 216 heading southbound towards the Whitemud and saw the vehicle coming towards him. The officer initiated emergency lights and made a U-turn and got behind the suspect vehicle.' Slaney said the RCMP officer was able to safely pull over and arrest the driver of the vehicle moments later. When the woman was in custody, the officer was notified the vehicle was the cause of a fatal collision on Anthony Henday Drive. 'RCMP and Edmonton Police Service work hand-in-hand for a lot of investigations. They were tied up with that horrible fatal collision and passed information on to RCMP and thankfully RCMP were able to intercept the suspect vehicle and take the female driver into custody,' said Slaney. Kadie Ellen Sinclair, 23, of Edmonton has been charged with impaired driving causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death. Postmedia has learned Sinclair was a former member of the NAIT Ooks women's soccer team. She played three seasons from 2021-2024 as a midfielder. An email to NAIT representatives said counselling services are being made available to NAIT athletes, students and staff or anyone who needs support in the aftermath of this incident. jhills@ Related Impaired driving charges laid after fatal crash on Anthony Henday Drive 'Going to be emotional': Family of girl, 16, killed in rollover west of Edmonton grapple with new set of emotions after charges laid You can also support our journalism by becoming a digital subscriber.
