The Blackcaps beat the Proteas by 21 runs in the second T20I of the ongoing Tri-Series at the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe on Wednesday.
Chasing 174 runs to win the match, the Proteas openers, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Reeza Hendricks, had a blistering start with the bat.
Pretorius (27) in particular had an impressive start to the chase, racing to 27 following six glorious strikes down the ground against Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy (3/20), who took the new ball for the Black Caps.
Henry (3/34) put a stop to the youngster's dominant start as he induced an edge off the left-handed batter's bat with gloveman Tim Seifert taking an easy catch behind the stumps to hand the Black Caps their first scalp of the match.

Looking to maintain the left-hand and right-hand combination in the middle, Rubin Hermann was promoted up the order, only for the batter to walk back to the pavilion an over later.
Conrad persisted with the combination as Senuran Muthusamy was sent in at No 4, ahead of Rassie van der Dussen and Dewald Brevis. That too did not amount to anything as Muthusamy only made seven as the Proteas lost wickets at regular intervals.
Brevis, who walked away with the Player of the Match award against Zimbabwe earlier in the week, picked up where he left off, smashing a series of big sixes as he transferred the pressure back on the Black Caps bowling attack.
George Linde offered a resistance towards the backend with a quickfire 30, but his demise ensured that the Black Caps were too good on the day, wrapping up the Proteas innings in 18.2 overs to win the match by 21 runs.
🚨 Change of Innings 🚨
A dramatic final 5 overs brings the first innings to a thrilling close in this second T20I of the Tri-Nations Series 🔥💪

Earlier, the Proteas quicks carried their momentum from their impressive bowling display against Zimbabwe earlier in the week and established their dominance in the contest against the Black Caps batters, reducing Rob Walters' men to 43/2 in the first Powerplay.
Kwena Maphaka, having been drafted into the playing XI for Nandre Burger, led from the front, claiming two wickets inside the opening 10 overs as he accounted for Devon Conway (9) with a vicious bouncer and the experienced James Neesham for a duck.
Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee and Senuran Muthusamy chipped in with one wicket apiece as they helped the Proteas reduce the Black Caps to 70/5 after 9.3 overs of the contest.
From there on in, it was the Black Caps show as Tim Robinson (75 not out) and Bevon Jacobs (44 not out) combined for an unbeaten 103 runs to propel the Black Caps to a competitive 173/5.
Robinson and Jacobs smashed a total of six sixes and seven fours between them as they feasted on what was a poor bowling performance from the Proteas bowlers in the last 10 overs of the innings.
New Zealand: 173/5 (Robinson 75*, Jacobs 44*, Maphaka 2/38)
South Africa: 152 all out (Brevis 35, Linde 30, Duffy 3/20, Henry 3/34)
New Zealand won by 21 runs

Black Caps encounter not just a practice game for Proteas

Proteas top-order batsman Rubin Hermann insists that their T20 Tri-Series game against New Zealand at the Harare Sports Complex on Tuesday is not a dead rubber, with the sides having already made Saturday's final. For the South African camp, it will be more than a dress rehearsal for the final against a Black Caps team who are yet to taste defeat, but more of a chance to fix their error-ridden performance against the same side last week. South Africa paid the price for a sloppy display with ball and then bat, slumping to a 21-run defeat in that showing. The bowlers let the Black Caps batsmen off the hook as they recovered from 74/5 to register a score of 173/5. Despite some thrilling batting from the top order, the Proteas' chase lacked consistency with too many batsmen throwing their wickets away.

Western Province set to meet plenty of familiar faces in Bulls Currie Cup opener

Western Province hooker Scarra Ntubeni is ready to fulfill a senior role for the team in the Currie Cup. Image: BackpagePix The Currie Cup is set to kick-off on a high note with a North-South derby between Western Province and the Bulls as South Africa's premier domestic competition starts this weekend. While both sides will have a keen focus on developing new players with a view on the United Rugby Championship (URC), there could be some added spice to this contest in the DHL Stadium - not that it ever needs any. A couple of former Stormers players have been included in the Bulls' squad for the campaign, and someone who probably did not reach his potential in the Cape due to some niggling injuries and minimal game time, Nama Xaba, is set to captain the Loftus Versfeld troop. Feel it, the Carling Currie Cup is here. Be there when we start our campaign with a North-South clash on home turf this Saturday. 🎟️ Get your tickets here #wpjoulekkerding — WP RUGBY (@WP_RUGBY) July 21, 2025 Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ URC winning lock Marvin Orie, loose forward Junior Pokomela, and prop Lizo Gqoboka are the other Stormers players in the Bulls' jersey, alongside Dylan de Leeuw and Chris Smit, who also played in the Cape for a bit. So, there will be a familiar feel to this game. According to veteran Western Province hooker Scarra Ntubeni, they will be prepared for what comes their way this weekend. 'There is definitely a lot of experience on their side with guys who have been here, but we have plans for that," Ntubeni said on Monday. 'It is not a big thing, though. We will just focus on executing our plans on the day. They won't also look too much into what we have done in the past, I think. Marvin does bring a lot of experience, but Gary (Porter) has done well for us. It won't be too much of an issue. 'We've put a lot of effort into this campaign and every tournament we enter, we want to win.' With the junior squads that the Bulls and Sharks announced, and the youngsters WP are set to let loose, it's clear to see that certain teams will be using the Currie Cup as a developmental tournament. ⚪ HOLLYWOODBETS SHARKS XV SQUAD LIST ⚫ — The Sharks (@SharksRugby) July 21, 2025 While it will cause some debate, the South African sides playing in the URC and European tournaments will have to expand their player base to be competitive in both international club tournaments. The Currie Cup provides that opportunity ahead of the start of the URC in October. Ntubeni is eager to take some young players under his wing and show them the ropes. 'The Currie Cup did take a bit of a dip, but it is the oldest tournament and there is a lot of history. We went to Newlands just so that the guys could absorb that they are playing for WP. With the rich history, they should take it seriously. 'For plenty of them, it is a dream come true. We are encouraging them to work hard and make memories.'

Proteas ready to set the record straight against New Zealand before tri-series final

South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch believes the Proteas will show greater ruthlessness in their second tri-series clash against New Zealand in Harare on Tuesday. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix South Africa will get another crack at New Zealand when the two sides meet for the second time in the T20I tri-series at Harare Sports Club on Tuesday, starting at 1pm. Despite a 21-run defeat to the Black Caps in their first encounter, the Proteas have already secured a place in Saturday's final – also against the Black Caps – thanks to back-to-back wins over Zimbabwe. Tuesday's match now doubles up as both a tune-up for the final and a chance to right the wrongs from their earlier clash with the Kiwis. South Africa were in control early in that game, reducing New Zealand to 70/5, but a resilient 103-run partnership between Tim Robinson and Bevon Jacobs flipped the script. Their stand proved the decisive factor, leaving Rassie van der Dussen's side frustrated and ultimately short of the 174-run target. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ The world Test champions bounced back in style as they beat Zimbabwe by seven wickets in their last outing on Sunday, setting themselves up perfectly to have a second bite at the Black Caps. All-rounder Corbin Bosch admitted the team fell short in the field during the first encounter but remained confident they will bring a sharper edge to the rematch. 'It's something we pride ourselves on — to be ruthless at all stages of the game,' Bosch said in the build-up. 'We took our foot off the paddle, especially in the field towards the back end of that game, and gave away some easy runs, along with a costly dropped chance that may have swung the game even more in our favour. 'But we've addressed it, and I think in our last game we were pretty ruthless with the ball—and we will need to do more of the same.' After a string of strong performances, George Linde is all business as he gears up for the final group stage clash of the Tri-Series against New Zealand tomorrow. 🇿🇦🔥#WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) July 21, 2025 The ongoing tour has also given head coach Shukri Conrad his first chance to hand extended opportunities to several fringe and promising young talents, allowing them to stake a claim for future selection. Bosch, along with emerging players like Rubin Hermann, Dewald Brevis, and Lhuandre Pretorius, has impressed so far and could play key roles in the remaining matches of the tournament. As one of the senior bowlers in the squad, Bosch believes the growing depth in South African cricket will only benefit the national team as they build towards the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be hosted in Sri Lanka and India. 'Shuks has tried to find some good combinations. The goal at the end of the day is the T20 World Cup coming up next year,' Bosch continued. 'I think he is trying to fine-tune all the combinations. This is his first white-ball tour and series as a coach, and he is trying to find his feet in that sense. 'He is meticulously planning how he wants to go about his teams and how he plans to set up his sides moving forward — obviously looking ahead to next year's tournament. He is trying to find the best combination of batters and bowlers, and he is doing a good job so far. Everyone is buying into his plans, and we are in a good space.'
