Ballon d'Or Feminin: Aitana Bonmati, Marta, and five Lionesses among nominees

The shortlist for the 2025 Ballon d'Or Feminin has been announced, with Aitana Bonmati, Marta and Alexia Putellas among the nominees. United States women's national team captain Lindsey Heaps is also on the 30-player shortlist alongside international team-mate Emily Fox. Fox is one of seven Arsenal players nominated — the most of any club —alongside Mariona Caldentey, Steph Catley, Chloe Kelly, Frida Maanum, Alessia Russo and Leah Williamson. Arsenal won the 2025 Champions League with victory over Barcelona, their first triumph in the competition since 2007. Barcelona midfielder Bonmati is again nominated and could become the first player in history to win the Ballon d'Or Feminin in three successive years. The 27-year-old won the 2024-25 Liga F title with Barcelona and was named player of the tournament at the 2025 European Championship as Spain reached the final for the first time but were beaten by England. She is one of six Barcelona players on the shortlist alongside two-time winner Putellas, Patri Guijarro, Caroline Graham Hansen, Ewa Pajor and Claudia Pina. Five members of England's Euro 2025-winning squad have been nominated: Kelly, Russo and Williamson, plus Chelsea pair Hannah Hampton and Lucy Bronze. Hampton is the only goalkeeper on the 30-player shortlist, and has also been nominated for the Yachine Trophy — the award for the best goalkeeper. Striker Michelle Agyemang, meanwhile, has been nominated for the Kopa Trophy, the award for the best player under the age of 21. Brazil forward Marta, 39, is one of National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) representatives on the shortlist, alongside Orlando Pride team-mate Barbra Banda, Washington Spirit's Sofia Cantore, Kansas City Current's Temwa Chawinga and Gotham FC's Esther Gonzalez. Jordan Spieth Reveals Ryder Cup Tension With Cheeky Keegan Bradley Comment

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Keegan Bradley has spent this season proving he belongs on Team USA, not just as the captain, but potentially as a Ryder Cup player. With a win at the Travelers Championship in June and three top-10 finishes in his last four starts, Bradley currently sits 10th in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings, just four spots outside the automatic qualification zone. If he finishes strong at next week's BMW Championship, he could lock in a spot. Otherwise, he'll have to decide whether to use one of his six captain's picks on himself. If that happens, Bradley would make him the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. But not everyone is sold on the idea of the U.S. Team captain pulling double duty. Jordan Spieth has bold opinion on Keegan Bradley's Ryder Cup future Spieth, currently ranked 27th in the Ryder Cup standings, joked on 'SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio' that Bradley should step aside as a player to open up a spot. "I keep trying to convince Keegan that, you know, it'd be a lot for him to have to play, too, so he probably should give up that pick, even if he is a top-10 player, top-seven player in the world," Spieth told podcast hosts Carl Paulson and Dennis Paulson. "It just seems like way too much to have to do! So, trying to open up all the opportunities I can, but I can also go take care of business myself." Spieth's comments were lighthearted, but the urgency behind them is real. He's on the outside looking in, with limited chances to make a final impression. (Photo by) More Getty Images "Making the Ryder Cup team was my loftiest goal to start the season," he expressed as posted by @SiriusXMPGATOUR on X. "I was coming in with almost no carryover points from '24, which hurts, and it was unusual for me for a Ryder Cup year. And then obviously skipping the first month of the season and starting late, I just thought, you know, boy, this would be the end goal. And the idea that I have a chance for it is very cool." To earn a captain's pick, Spieth likely needs a deep FedEx Cup Playoff run, possibly all the way to Atlanta and the Tour Championship. A win at the FedEx St. Jude Championship this week or the BMW Championship next week would help, but knowing he hasn't won in over three years, it can be tough. If we look at the 13-time PGA Tour winner's Ryder Cup record, he's 8-9-5 in 22 matches. That's just short of .500, and Spieth has yet to win a singles match. Still, his leadership and experience could be invaluable at Bethpage Black, where the Ryder Cup is set to take place in late September. "It'd be incredible. I've played in five of 'em. They're the coolest events that you can play in, in a sport. And I'd love to play in another five if I can or more," Spieth expressed during the same podcast. "This one will be special, being at Bethpage. I played the (2019 PGA Championship) really well there (tied for third). And obviously, your Long Island crowd and tri-state area, coming and representing your country there, would be the mecca of what you can do for a home game." As for this week, both Spieth and Bradley teed off Thursday at TPC Southwind for the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Spieth went off at 8:40 a.m. E.T. alongside Wyndham Clark, while Bradley followed later in the morning. More Golf: Duchess of York Once Flew 1,500 Miles to Impress Tiger Woods, New Book Says

Former Mavericks Assistant Marko Milic Says Americans Can't Accept Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic's Dominance

Former Mavericks Assistant Marko Milic Says Americans Can't Accept Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic's Dominance originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Former Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Marko Milic has finally broken his silence after leaving the franchise earlier this year, and his comments have sparked a powerful conversation about bias, perception, and what it means to be 'the best' in the NBA today. Milic, who worked closely with Luka Doncic during his three years in Dallas, made it clear in recent interviews that he believes Americans have a hard time accepting the dominance of European stars like Doncic and Nikola Jokic, precisely because they don't fit the league's traditional athletic mold. "I am not like the Americans who follow their own criteria. Regardless of what was criticized, Luka was the best scorer in the league, he really had top seasons." "In simple terms, they find it difficult to understand that Luka and Jokić are the best players in the world, because they are not according to their athletic standards, but mentally, technically, tactically and with a smile on their face they dominate the league and that is why they are always looking for something." "They will surely find something else even now, when he looks like a model." Milic was candid in expressing his frustrations with the double standards he believes European players face. That belief isn't unfounded. Jokic is a three-time MVP and NBA champion who dismantled some of the league's most physical teams using his unmatched vision, footwork, and IQ. Doncic, meanwhile, led the league in scoring, has five All-NBA First Team selections before the age of 26, and recently transformed his body into peak condition during the offseason. Milic argued that while American fans and media often measure greatness through speed, vertical leap, or physique, Doncic and Jokic win through something far more dangerous: mentality and technical brilliance. He also criticized the persistent narrative around Luka's conditioning. Now that Doncic has slimmed down and elevated his fitness with a meticulous offseason routine, including intermittent fasting, sugar reduction, and protein-focused training, Milic joked that critics will simply find a new reason to doubt him. Milic's departure from Dallas came after Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in what is already being remembered as one of the most seismic trades in NBA history. Alongside Luka, his personal trainer Anze Macek also left the Mavericks. Despite early rumors, Milic did not join the Lakers' staff, instead returning to Slovenia to take on a role focused on youth development with the national basketball federation. Still, his connection with Doncic remains strong, both personally and professionally. The assistant coach's comments tap into a larger cultural conversation about how basketball greatness is defined. In an era that often celebrates raw athleticism, Milic's defense of cerebral, skill-based dominance is a reminder that basketball is not just a game of physical gifts, but also one of vision, anticipation, and control. And in that arena, Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic are rewriting the rules of what it means to be elite.
