Bersatu man lodges police report over alleged recording of Melaka CM

The MACC arrested Bersatu deputy information chief Ali Mohamad on April 15 to assist in an investigation into allegations of bribery, according to lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali.
KUALA LUMPUR : A Bersatu leader has lodged a police report over an audio clip featuring the voice of an individual, allegedly that of Melaka chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh, which has spread over social media.
At a press conference today, Bersatu deputy information chief Ali Mohamad claimed that the audio clip was connected to his arrest by the police last year.
He had mentioned the police arrest in a Facebook post on April 15 but did not go into the specifics of his arrest.
Yesterday, Berita Harian reported Rauf as dismissing news of several audio clips, purportedly featuring his voice, being shared on social media, calling them part of a 'political game' to destroy his character.
He said he was unaffected by these audio clips and did not see the need to lodge a police report.
Previously, the media reported that a three-minute, 57-second audio clip, purportedly featuring Rauf's voice, had spread on social media a day after he denied involvement in Ali's arrest by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission on April 15.
Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali said the MACC's arrest of Ali was to help in its investigation into allegations of bribery.
Melaka opposition leader Dr Yadzil Yaakub then urged Rauf to make a police report if he had nothing to do with the audio clips.

Malaysia Committed To Strengthening Ties With Timor-Leste, Backs ASEAN Membership Bid

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation with Timor-Leste in various strategic areas and supporting the country's aspiration to become a full ASEAN member. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was discussed during a meeting with Timor-Leste President Dr Jose Ramos-Horta at his residence in Putrajaya today. 'Received President Timor-Leste, Dr Jose Ramos-Horta, at my residence today, further strengthening the close ties between Malaysia and Timor-Leste,' he said in a Facebook post. Anwar added that Malaysia remains dedicated to playing a constructive role in supporting regional integration for shared stability and prosperity. At a press conference concluding the 46th ASEAN Summit here on May 27, Anwar said that Southeast Asian leaders agreed to admit Timor-Leste as the 11th member of the regional bloc at the ASEAN Summit in October, subject to fulfilling certain outstanding conditions for full membership. The Prime Minister said the leaders reached a consensus to support Timor-Leste in taking all necessary steps to achieve full membership in the regional bloc. Timor-Leste, which gained independence in 2002, formally applied to join ASEAN in 2011 and was granted observer status in 2022. -- BERNAMA

No whistleblower protection for Sabah case informant– MACC

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that the person set to be charged alongside two Sabah assemblymen in connection with a corruption case involving mineral mining licences is not protected under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010. Its Legal and Prosecution senior director, Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, said Section 11(1) of the Act clearly states that anyone involved in the offence they report is not eligible for protection. "If a person is involved in the wrongdoing, they are not protected under the Act and therefore cannot be considered a whistleblower," he told Bernama today. He said to qualify for protection, a report must be made in good faith to a recognised enforcement agency such as the MACC, the police, or other authorised government bodies. "Reports made with malicious intent, such as to seek revenge or defame others, do not meet the criteria for protection," he added. Wan Shaharuddin also stressed that a key requirement under Section 11(1) is that the whistleblower must not be complicit in the wrongdoing being reported. If found otherwise, any protection granted may be revoked. "This is to preserve the integrity of the whistleblower framework and prevent it from being misused as a 'shield' by those trying to escape accountability," he said. Earlier, the individual's lawyer claimed his client was a whistleblower who had cooperated with authorities, but was later informed he would be charged in court on June 30. Recently, several video clips allegedly featuring conversations involving certain individuals and Sabah elected representatives discussing corrupt practices linked to mineral mining activities went viral on social media. Previously, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that two Sabah assemblymen and another individual are expected to be charged in court this month in connection with the scandal. – BERNAMA
