PM Anwar commends cartoonist Zunar for resilience in art industry

SHAH ALAM: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim lauded cartoonist Zunar for his persistent efforts in revitalising Malaysia's art scene through politically charged works, despite facing numerous challenges. Speaking at the launch of *Melukis Dengan Hati: Biografi Perjalanan Seni 50 Tahun Karya Zunar*, Anwar acknowledged the depth of Zunar's critiques, which often carry significant political weight. 'An artist's sketches are the outpouring of the heart, driven by conviction. When a work is created freely and sincerely, the risks it carries are equally great,' Anwar said. He noted that while Zunar's art may not always align with official views, such expression is vital in a democratic society. Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Haque, has long been known for his sharp political satire. Anwar urged the public to support the artist by purchasing his newly launched biography, as past works were often reproduced without permission. 'We should repay him by buying this book. For decades, he contributed during the reform era, yet people reprinted his works instead of buying them,' he added. The 230-page book traces Zunar's career, from early contributions in *Bambino* and *Gila-Gila* magazines to his work in *Berita Harian*, *Harakah*, and *MalaysiaKini*. The event was attended by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. - Bernama

#SHOWBIZ: Rosnani Jamil hopes to publish late husband's poetry collection

BENTONG: Veteran actress Datuk Rosnani Jamil is determined to publish a collection of 137 poems penned by her late husband, film legend Datuk Jamil Sulong, before she passes away. Berita Harian reported today that the poems, written during Jamil's tenure as a guest writer at Universiti Sains Malaysia, have been carefully stored in a grey folder at their home in Janda Baik. One of Rosnani's particular favourites is 'Tiga Ros' (Three Roses), a touching dedication to three women who once held a special place in Jamil's heart, including Rosnani herself. Other notable works include 'Bila Hari Tua' (When Old Age Comes) and 'Ram', a poignant tribute to Tan Sri P. Ramlee. The latter was penned to remind the iconic director to remain humble and wary of envy after achieving success. Rosnani, 90, has long harboured the wish to publish these poems but has faced significant financial and logistical challenges. However, a recent meeting with Tan Sri Johan Jaafar at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair has opened a crucial door for the project, with Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) now stepping in to provide assistance. The publication process is anticipated to take approximately three months. Rosnani, who directed the 1987 hit film 'Mawar Merah', expressed her fervent hope that the book will be completed while she is still alive. "Whether it happens or not is up to God. But if possible, I want to see the book published before I'm gone," she said. Johan underscored the significance of the poems, describing them as a cultural treasure, and urged DBP to help preserve Jamil Sulong's invaluable literary legacy.

Malay rock legend Rosli Mohalim is a busker now

He was a rockstar who performed in huge venues across Singapore and Malaysia. But today, Rosli Mohalim, ex-lead guitarist of Singapore's most illustrious Malay rock band Sweet Charity, has a more humble stage - you can catch him busking in Changi Village, Tampines, Admiralty Village, and Jurong Park. The Singaporean musician suffered a stroke in 2021. After a year of treatment which included acupuncture and physiotherapy, the 71-year-old found his proficiency as a guitarist had drastically diminished. "I was slowly recovering, but I still could not play the guitar like before," he told Berita Harian. He felt his dexterity returning in 2023, but performance offers were not forthcoming. Rosli then decided to take matters into his own hands - he started busking in Johor Bahru, where he has lived since 2002. Last year, he auditioned successfully for a busking licence in Singapore, and now performs here three to four days a week. He makes a two-hour trip from his home in JB, arriving in Singapore between 11am and noon, and performs for three to four hours before heading back across the Causeway. He also performs weekly at Plaza Angsana in JB. "I'm grateful that I'm earning quite well as a street musician," he told Malaysia's New Straits Times. "I've recovered about 90 per cent, but the stroke did affect my performance slightly. Nevertheless, many people still come to listen to my music." A rock legend Sweet Charity ruled the Malay rock scene in Singapore and Malaysia from the 1970s to the 1980s, and hits such as Teratai (1979) and Kamelia (1980) enjoy regular airplay on Malay radio. As recently as 2023, Rosli performed with the band in a reunion tour which included shows at the 3,000-seat Stadium Arena Larkin in JB and the 5,000-capacity Star Theatre in Singapore, along with stops in Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak. Busking seems like a much smaller gig compared to those, but Rosli is unfazed. For him, it beats doing nothing. "At this age, it's not good to just sit still. I have to stay active. I occasionally bump into my old bandmate Datuk Ramli Sarip, and he approves of what I'm doing," he added.

#SHOWBIZ: Shila Amzah: Not true that I support my husband financially

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular Malaysian singer Shila Amzah, 35, has vehemently denied recent online allegations suggesting she financially supports her husband, Ubai. In an interview with Berita Harian today, Shila dismissed the claims as "baseless." She emphasised that Ubai, whose full name is Muhammad Ubaidillah Mohd Zulkefli, 27, works diligently behind the scenes to support her singing career. "If it were true that I was financially supporting him and that he wasn't working, I wouldn't be as happy and cheerful as I am today," Shila said. "Just look at my social media photos from 2023 onwards; I clearly look happier." Shila described Ubai as her "spokesman, protector, and defender," highlighting his maturity, responsibility, and caring nature. Ubai himself recently faced criticism from netizens who alleged he was "living off his wife's earnings." He has since publicly defended himself against these naysayers. Shila and Ubai tied the knot in August 2023 and are parents to a daughter, Rhea Akira. Shila also has a son, Seth Uwais, from her first marriage to Haris Edraki.

Question about life drives singer to tears

Compiled by FAZLEENA AZIZ, C. ARUNO and R. ARAVINTHAN SINGER Hafiz Suip could not hold back his tears when asked by fans whether he was happy with his current life, Berita Harian reported. The 35-year-old cried when the question was asked in a video sharing titled Episode 1 Behind Me – Hafiz Suip on Instagram on July 19. 'I am grateful for His blessings. I am happy and trying to make peace with life. 'I don't want to play the blame game; that's what will complicate things. So, when you have acceptance, you will find happiness,' he said while wiping away tears. On Friday, Hafiz uploaded a photo accompanied by the date 1.11.2025, signalling that there will be a special performance or concert. In the same video post, Hafiz, a two-time Anugerah Juara Lagu winner, said he has not put an end to his singing career. 'This is all that I have. With the support of my fans, I will still be in this industry,' he said. He also admitted that being away from his children, as well as the negative comments from the public, was the saddest time of his life. Earlier this year, Hafiz admitted that his nine-year marriage with Nureffy Jasreel Abdullah became rocky. The couple are said to no longer live together and are in the process of divorce. > The Negri Sembilan Wildlife and National Parks Department is monitoring two locations in Kuala Pilah and Jelebu after a tapir was captured on video, Sinar Harian reported. Its director Faizal Izham Pikri said there were no forest reserves near the two locations, but the presence of bushland gave the tapir room to move. He said regular monitoring was carried out to ensure the safety of residents and wildlife. On Friday, two separate photos and videos of wild tapirs shared by social media users went viral. So far, the department has received six complaints regarding tapirs roaming around and damaging crops in the area, he said. The above articles are compiled from the vernacular newspapers (Bahasa Malaysia, Chinese and Tamil dailies). As such, stories are grouped according to the respective language/medium.
