Hamas to release American hostage who fought terrorist group ‘hand-to-hand'
An American who fought 'hand-to-hand' with Hamas before being captured will be released on Saturday alongside two other hostages, Hamas has confirmed.
On Friday, relief swept Israel as the terrorist group handed over the names of the three men within the deadline, having threatened to postpone hostage releases earlier in the week.
They include that of Sagui Delek-Chen, a US citizen and resident of Kibbutz Nir Oz who ushered his wife and children into a sealed room once the Oct 7 attack began before going out to confront the gunmen along with other members of the kibbutz security team.
His father, Jonathan, who was born in Connecticut, said Sagui helped raise the alarm that the community was under siege, giving some residents chance to reach safety.
A long fight ensued and the 36-year-old was last heard from at 9.30am.
'My daughter-in-law and the kids are now traumatised,' Jonathan said after the massacre.
'Avital heard her husband struggling in hand-to-hand combat.'
The Israeli public is anxiously waiting to see the physical state of the three men after the emaciated appearance of the men released last week drew comparisons to the Holocaust.
The planned release of the American was announced after repeated aggressive statements from Donald Trump, the US president, over the past week, including a demand that all the hostages be released by midday on Saturday or 'all hell is going to break out', as well as making comments about the release of US hostages specifically.
The negotiations in Qatar are shrouded in secrecy and it is not known whether Israel pressed for the release of this hostage in particular.
Jonathan has been a key member of the American delegation of hostage family members advocating for their release.
A social and business entrepreneur and an avid tennis player, his son was captured alongside his mother, Neomit, 63.
However, an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) helicopter engaged the driver of the vehicle in which she was being abducted, allowing her to escape, although injured.
Avital gave birth to the couple's third daughter while her husband was in captivity.
After Hamas threatened not to release hostages this week in retaliation for alleged violations of the ceasefire deal by Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, adopted Mr Trump's language regarding recommencing the war, as well as reinforcing units in and around Gaza.
However, while unnamed officials briefed that Israel would only accept the release of all on the list, Mr Netanyahu's words were ambiguous.
On Friday, the Israeli government said it would accept the slated release of three, ensuring the ceasefire continues for now, and the release of scores of Palestinian prisoners, but it was reported that they were pushing for more in the coming days.
Sasha Troufanov, who is also due to be released this weekend, was another captured from Nir Oz.
Of Russian origin, the 29-year-old, who works as an engineer in Amazon's cloud division, was kidnapped from his home along with his mother, Elena, grandmother Irina Tai, and girlfriend, Sapir Cohen.
His father, Vitaly, was killed during the massacre.
All three women were released under the November 2023 deal.
In May 2024, Palestinian Islamic Jihad released a video of Mr Troufanov, followed by another in November.
Yair Horn, 46, another resident of Nir Oz, will also be released.
Born in Argentina, he was well known in the community as the organiser of Purim parties, which mark the important Jewish holiday, and for managing the kibbutz pub.
On the day of the attack, he was being visited by his brother, Eitan, now 38.
Both men were captured
When their father texted to warn them that something was wrong, he replied: 'Did you forget that in Yair's kibbutz the missiles always pass overhead?', a reference to Hamas's campaign of rocket fire that long-predated Oct 7.
Both men were captured and Eitan is not on the list of the 33 to be released under the first phase of the deal.
It is expected that the three will be released on Saturday morning.
Mr Netanyahu has suffered a slip in the polls since the weekend, which commentators have attributed to disgust over the state of the three freed last weekend and impatience with the speed of releases.
Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, the IDF's chief of staff, apologised to female soldiers who had manned a surveillance point near Gaza, and were taken captive, after their warnings about Hamas activity were ignored.
'It was wrong to have not taken you seriously, you were amazing soldiers, I apologise for what you experienced in captivity,' Lt Gen Halevi says to four of the five surveillance soldiers who were held by Hamas for 15 months, according to leaked remarks.

Zelensky refutes Trump and calls Putin 'murderer who came to kill the kids'
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected US President Donald Trump's comparison of the war with Russia to kids fighting, but labeled Russian President Vladimir Putin a child 'murderer'. Zelensky strongly refuted Trump's analogy involving him and Putin in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. 'Sometimes you see two young children fighting like crazy,' Trump said during an Oval Office meeting on Thursday. 'They hate each other, and they're fighting in a park, and you try and pull them apart. 'They don't want to be pulled. Sometimes you're better off letting them fight for a while and then pulling them apart.' Zelensky was asked in an interview airing on Sunday if Trump was 'getting the message' of the suffering in Ukraine. More Trending 'We are not kids with Putin at the playground in the park,' Zelensky told ABC News' This Week with George Stephanopoulos co-host Martha Raddatz in a clip released on Friday. 'He is a murderer who came to this park to kill the kids.' Zelensky added that Trump 'could not feel fully and understand this pain'. 'And it's not about President Trump, it's about any person who is not here in the country, who is some thousands of miles away — cannot feel fully and understand this pain.' Dawn French sparks backlash after filming peculiar video about October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel
Dawn French has sparked a ferocious backlash after describing the October 7 attacks unleashed by Hamas terrorists on Israel as 'a bad thing' during a bizarre social media rant. The Vicar of Dibley star, 67, posted to X discussing her thoughts on the 'nuanced' situation in Israel and Gaza. Adopting a baby-like voice, French appeared to belittle supporters of Israel's actions amid the ongoing war against Hamas. During the 40-second video, the actress can be heard saying: 'Complicated, no, but nuanced. But [the] bottom line is no,' inferring that Israel should cease its military campaign. The British comedian then adopted more infantile tones as she gave an impression of those with opposing views to her own. 'Yeah, but you know they did a bad thing to we want that we have history… Those people aren't really even people, are they?' she can be heard saying in a whining manner. At the end of each statement French returns to her natural voice and emphatically says 'No'. Critics have seized upon the video, which has racked up 4.7million views since it was first posted on Thursday, and accused French of 'mocking' the events of October 7. Actress and playwright Tracy-Ann Oberman, who is Jewish, said she was 'saddened' by the post. 'This mocking voice 'bad thing' of October 7 that Dawn (who I revere by the way) appears to be mocking involved the most horrific terrorist attack involving rape, sexual violence, burning alive child, mutilation and the taking of civilian hostages. 'Why would Dawn seem to deny that which has affected so many of us personally in the most painful way possible. 'I can mourn the horrors of the war in Gaza whilst also remembering the horrors of what started it. 'Is this how most of our industry feels now – Oct 7 was a 'little thing'? NO!' Former MP and author Louise Mensch accused French of having a 'chuckle and chunter'. She said: 'A 'bad thing'? Rapes, murders, torture, strangled a couple of infants, etc etc, so let's have a good chuckle and chunter, shall we Dawn? 'But the saddest thing about this post is not its casual cruelty, but that you think you're a progressive. You're not.' Former MP and author Louise Mensch accused French of having a 'chuckle and chunter' Meanwhile comedy screenwriter and activist Lee Kern said French had 'sneeringly mocked' the October 7 massacre. He wrote: 'I imagine you think you are moral and righteous and taking a stand against pain and suffering. 'But not only do you remain intellectually incurious about who the architect of all this suffering is, (Hamas), not only do you fail to say NO to them in front of your audience and condemn them for their retention of the hostages, use of human shields, fighting from hospitals, schools and civilian proactively broadcast - with misplaced pride - a wicked glee in your mockery and dismissal of Jewish suffering, pain and death...' French later responded to Oberman's post to emphasise she did not 'support the atrocities of Oct 7th.' She wrote: 'I do not say 'a little thing'. In NO WAY do I support the atrocities of Oct 7th. Of course not. Appalling. Horrific. 'But starving innocent children is not the answer. NO is the answer to ALL of it Tracy.' Israel has been waging a military campaign in Gaza since Hamas' brutal massacre on October 7, 2023, in which 1,200 people were murdered and 251 taken hostage. At least 20 of the remaining 56 hostages still held by Hamas are thought to be alive. According to official Hamas figures, at least 54,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war. The Israeli military issued an evacuation order on Friday for residents of parts of Gaza City ahead of an attack that 'will strike all areas from which rockets are launched'. Israel has recently stepped up its campaign in Gaza in what it says is a renewed push to defeat Hamas amid growing international calls for a negotiated ceasefire.

Man wrongly deported to El Salvador back in US to face human trafficking charges
A man wrongly deported to El Salvador by the Trump administration has been brought back to the US to face federal charges for human trafficking, Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Friday. Kilmar Abrego Garcia was mistakenly deported in March due to an 'administrative error,' according to an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official. He was one of hundreds of alleged Venezuelan gang members sent to El Salvador's mega-prison, where he was held for weeks before being moved to another jail. For months, the US president's administration has been locked in a tense standoff with federal courts over orders to return Abrego Garcia from El Salvador - a dispute one judge warned could trigger a 'incipient crisis' between the two. Abrego Garcia has now been charged in Tennessee with conspiracy to unlawfully transport illegal immigrants for financial gain and unlawful transportation of illegal immigrants for financial gain. Officials said on Friday that he will be prosecuted in the US and, if convicted, will be sent back to El Salvador once the case is over. 'This is what American justice looks like,' Attorney General Bondi said on Friday in announcing the return of Abrego Garcia and the criminal charges. "This defendant trafficked firearms and narcotics throughout our country on multiple occasions. They were using vehicles, SUVs, with added seats in the back, floors that had been ripped out, guns, narcotics, children, women, MS-13 members. That is what the grand jury found. "A co-conspirator alleged that the defendant solicited nude photographs and videos of a minor. A co-conspirator also alleges the defendant played a role in the murder of a rival gang member's mother. These facts demonstrate Abrego Garcia is a danger to our community." The charges also allege that Abrego Garcia took part in a years-long conspiracy to illegally transport thousands of undocumented migrants, including alleged MS-13 members. He and his family deny any links to the gang, saying he fled violence in El Salvador. What compelled authorities to press charges? The case began with a 2022 vehicle stop by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, who suspected Abrego Garcia of human trafficking. Last month, Tennessee authorities released bodycam footage of a 2022 traffic stop showing Abrego Garcia having a calm and friendly exchange with officers. A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) report from April noted that none of the passengers had luggage, but all gave the same address as Abrego Garcia. Abrego Garcia was never charged and was only given a warning for an expired driver's licence, the DHS report said. The report said he was travelling from Texas to Maryland via Missouri to transport workers for construction jobs. In April, his wife said in response to the report that he sometimes moved groups of workers between sites, making the stop 'entirely plausible,' and insisted he was never charged or cited. The Trump administration publicised Abrego Garcia's past police encounters, despite a lack of corresponding criminal charges, as it faced federal court orders and congressional calls to bring him back to the US. Abrego Garcia's lawyer, Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, said after the footage's release that it showed no evidence of a crime. 'But the point is not the traffic stop — it's that Mr Abrego Garcia deserves his day in court,' he said in May. Abrego Garcia illegally arrived in the US in 2012 at the age of 16. Seven years later, he was arrested and handed over to immigration authorities, fearing he could be sent back to El Salvador. An immigration judge later ruled in his favour, blocking his removal to his home country.
