Struggling Aussie young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk axed days into international revival

7NEWS23-07-2025
Jake Fraser-McGurk's return to the Australian team has been short-lived, axed for game two of the five-match T20 series against the West Indies.
The Australians will bowl first after captain Mitch Marsh won the toss at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
Left-arm tweaker Matt Kuhnemann has been summoned for a debut to replace paceman Sean Abbott.
It marks a milestone moment for Kuhnemann after being accused of an illegal action following his stellar Test series against Sri Lanka.
He was cleared weeks later following a formal assessment.
Fraser-McGurk's omission has seen Josh Inglis promoted to open while middle-order blaster Tim David returns from a hamstring injury.
Fraser-McGurk had initially been left out of the squad for the series after a run of low scores for Australia, before earning a reprieve with a late call-up last week when Matt Short was injured.
But he was dismissed for just two runs off seven balls in the opener.
It is the latest short-lived revival for the 23-year-old, who was dropped after white-ball matches against Pakistan at the start of last summer before scoring two and nine in ODI appearances on the tour of Sri Lanka in February.
Meanwhile, West Indies named the same side that lost the first game by three wickets at the same venue.
The series continues in St Kitts on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday (all times AEDT).
Australia: Mitch Marsh (capt), Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Tim David, Mitch Owen, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Matt Kuhnemann.
West Indies: Shai Hope (capt), Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Gudakesh Motie, Rovman Powell, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford.

England fall just short in epic Test finale against India as Chris Woakes braves dislocated shoulder

An infinitely brave cameo from injured England allrounder Chris Woakes wasn't enough for his side to win an epic series-ending Test match against India. India completed one of the most dramatic Test match victories seen on British soil on Monday night (AEST), squaring the series 2-2 with a stunning six-run victory after Woakes attempted to carry England over the line with a dislocated shoulder. England arrived on the final day of a classic Test summer needing 35 runs to complete a remarkable chase of 374. But they were blown away on a morning of unbearable tension and true sporting drama. They lost their last four wickets for 28 runs as Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson succumbed to searing pressure at The Oval. Woakes, who is expected to be out for several months with the injury he sustained in the field on Friday, answered his country's call by coming out at number 11 to try to help finish the job. Holding the bat in one hand, his left arm strapped in a sling under his jumper, he joined the fray with 17 runs still needed and was grimacing in pain with every completed run throughout his brief stay. 'He is in tremendous pain, you can see him grimacing,' Ravi Shastri said on Sky Sports. 'The tension is unbearable.' In the end he did not face a ball, as Mohammed Siraj clean bowled Atkinson to secure a sensational result and series draw.

India snatch famous Test victory despite courageous one-armed effort from England's Woakes

India have snatched an incredible Test victory over England, despite England's No.11 batter Chris Woakes bravely walking out to bat with his dislocated shoulder in a sling. In a thrilling finish, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj bowled Gus Atkinson to seal a famous victory by six runs – India's narrowest Test win – and level the series at the Oval. Woakes walked out to bat with England needing 17 runs for victory, his left arm tucked inside his vest in scenes reminiscent of West Indies great Malcolm Marshall, who once batted with a broken arm. Woakes, who grimaced every time he ran, had dislocated his shoulder on the opening day of the Test and was prepared to bat with one arm. However, his batting partner, Atkinson, was determined to protect him from the strike by swinging hard in an effort to get the remaining runs, and Woakes did not have to face a ball. He was toppled by a Siraj yorker for 17. Siraj's heroics in bowling his team to victory completed an epic series, and in England's case a fascinating preview for this summer's Ashes series in Australia.
