ST. GALLEN, Switzerland (Reuters) -Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson said her team would love nothing more than to spoil England's party when the neighbours and rival nations meet in their final Euro 2025 Group D match on Sunday.
Defending champions England already have one foot in the quarter-finals, with a victory ensuring they advance to the knockout round. A draw would also put them through provided France beat the Netherlands.
But Wales, who have lost both matches so far at their European championship debut, certainly are not going to make it easy for them.
"It would be detrimental to look past us," said the Canadian coach Wilkinson at a press conference.
"The pressure's all on them. We know there's still a chance for us, we're aware of it. And when there's a chance, there's always an exciting element that we get to go towards and not be frightened of because what do we have to fear? It's just an exciting opportunity.
"We're going to push them to the very end. We're in a very close group - England will be forced to play a strong line-up. We get to show up and spoil the party and that's a wonderful job to have."
Wales' chances of advancing are slim - they need to beat England by at least four goals and for France to beat the Dutch.
But they would happily play spoiler.
"As a Welsh woman, do you want to knock England out? Of course you do," said midfielder Angharad James.
"It's in our blood, our DNA and the rivalry has always been and always will be there. It's a rivalry match and it's one that everyone wants to play in.
"But the pressure is all on England. They have to come out, they have to perform. They're expected to win this game within our group. We believe that we can upset a very top team, and we're ready for the fight tomorrow.
"We'll give it our absolute all for our country and to make them prouder."
Wales were drawn into arguably the toughest group of the tournament, with three teams in the top 11 of FIFA's world rankings.
But they have been roared on by huge and noisy cheering sections - the Red Wall - at both games, and were rewarded in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to France when 38-year-old Jess Fishlock scored the team's first goal at a major tournament.

Man City and Puma sign £1b record long-term kit deal, surpassing Man U's £900m Adidas contract

LONDON, July 15 —Manchester City have extended their kit partnership with Puma on a long-term deal, the club announced today, with British media reports saying the deal is worth around £1 billion (RM5.7 billion), making it the largest in the Premier League. The new contract runs for at least another 10 years, reports said, worth a record £100 million a year to the club. City previously signed a £65 million per year deal with the German kit manufacturer in 2019. The agreement is expected to set a new benchmark for kit manufacturer deals among English clubs, surpassing Manchester United's £900 million 10-year contract with Adidas, signed in 2023. City have enjoyed an exceptional run since 2020, winning four consecutive Premier League titles and securing the treble in the 2022-23 season. However, they did not win a major trophy last season. City will begin their 2025-26 Premier League campaign on August 16 with a trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers. — Reuters

England midfielder Henderson joins Brentford

LONDON, July 15 — England midfielder Jordan Henderson joined Brentford on a free transfer today following his exit from Dutch side Ajax. Henderson agreed a two-year contract with the Bees as he returned to the Premier League after leaving Liverpool in 2023. Brentford's new manager Keith Andrews moved for the 35-year-old after losing Denmark midfielder Christian Norgaard to Arsenal. 'When we became aware of Jordan's availability, it was a pretty simple decision,' Andrews said. 'We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is. He's still phenomenally fit and he's still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot. 'With the void of experienced players leaving the building - Christian Norgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee - it was important to replace that. 'What Jordan will bring is that he has been one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years. He's been at the forefront of driving for titles and Champions Leagues at a fantastic football club. 'He also has experience at international level with England and, with that, comes a level of experience, professionalism and dedication to his profession - that's the exact way we want to be as a football club.' Henderson has 84 England caps and was recently recalled by Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel. He spent 12 years with Liverpool, winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020 among numerous other trophies, before a lucrative move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq two years ago. Henderson was accused of putting money above principles, having previously spoken out in support of the LGBTQ community. His contract with Al-Ettifaq was cancelled just six months later. Henderson subsequently joined Ajax, earning the captaincy and making 57 appearances for the Dutch club. However, Ajax's late collapse cost them the Eredivisie title last season and his contract was terminated last week with a year still left to run. — AFP
